Home Styles of Tucson
Territorial
A flat roof and brick construction characterize this popular home style. Reminiscent of Arizona in the late 1800's, before statehood in 1912, the territorial is often combined with natural desert landscaping that provides a low cost maintenance home.
Sante Fe
Inspired by traditional Indian pueblos, this stucco or adobe home - or casa - has become a mainstay in Tucson design. The relatively plain cubed design is softened by its rounded corners and rustic wooden beams - vigas - extending from the front.
Ranch
Traditionally, a one-story red brick home with low ceilings that rambles across the home site. The roof will normally be stretched out over the walls providing shade and heat protection - particularly on the south and west sides. A popular Tucson home style.
Spanish
A single level rambling ranch that gracefully embraces the architectural details of Old Spain. Built of block or frame stucco, the home will usually have a combination of flat and pitched roof sections accentuated with clay tiles or wood shingles. The California "haciendas" style reveals its Spanish heritage in the arches and plaster ornamentation around the windows.
Contemporary
This home style combines the qualities of the conventional and California ranch styles. Built of frame and stucco with a tile roof, the home will normally have large windows, soaring cathedral ceilings and split level floor plans. This style is becoming a popular home in Tucson.
Contemporary - Modern
This style is being seen more frequently in upscale neighborhoods. Its crisp clean design will normally offer large glass walls and windows. High ceilings and open floor plans are the standard interior design.
