Vail School District was a ranching community with a one-room schoolhouse in 1903. In the late 1980’s, Vail had only two schools.
In 2016, VSD opened its 19th school.
It operates an inclusive preschool, ten elementary schools, six middle schools, and four high schools, plus the Vail Academy and High School, a K-12 school.

A Bit Of History
Vail is named after the Vail Brothers, Edward and Walter. They arrived in the late 1870?s, and purchased the Empire Ranch.
They quickly became cattle ranchers. They also developed the Total Wreck Mine in the Empire Mountains.
As their wealth increased they expanded the Empire Ranch. Ultimately it stretched from the Santa Rita Mountains to the Mexican Border, between the Santa Cruz and San Pedro Rivers.
