Solar Power In Tucson Arizona

Solar Power In Tucson Arizona

Solar Is A Great Idea With Some Big Tradeoffs And New Options From TEP

Solar Power tucson azArizona solar power is a hot topic. No pun intended.

Arizona ranks second in the U.S. for rooftop solar. Arizona ranks first for utility-scale solar power plants.

Latest Solar Power Programs From Tucson Electric Power

While solar power options are available from third party providers, you should be aware that TEP offers two easy ways to go solar.

1. TEP GoSolar Home – Residential TEP customers who own their homes can buy all of their power from a local 5-megawatt TEP solar array for a monthly price that can remain fixed for 10 years.

The fixed monthly bill is based on your previous 12 months of electric use and will stay the same as long as future use doesn’t go up or down by more than 15 percent.

2. TEP GoSolar Shares – Purchase some or potentially all of your power from local TEP solar arrays on a flexible, month-to-month basis. Buy solar power in “shares” of 150 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per month for about 1 cent per kWh.

The power supply component of your bill covered by shares is fixed for 20 years, and the shares are exempt from some surcharges. Both residential and commercial customers can participate in this program.

TEP is no longer accepting applications for the TEP Residential Solar Program. That pilot program was designed to provide homeowners with energy from a rooftop solar array through a flat monthly fee for electric service that will remain fixed for up to 25 years.

Major Changes To TEP’s Solar Programs

Solar Power Update – Just Released – September 11, 2018

The Arizona Corporate Commission granted TEP’s request to end the solar net-metering program.

When a solar company designs a custom system for you, it’s designed to purposely overproduce power so when the sun goes down you pull back the overproduction created during the day so you don’t purchase that power from TEP.

Sending the extra power back to the grid is accomplished using net-meters. As you can imagine, TEP does not like this program as it allows each solar customer to separate relie less on TEP receive cheaper electric power.

On September 11th, TEP’s wish to remove the Net-Metering program was granted. It goes into effect in 10 days.

Tucson Electric Power is one of the nation’s leading solar power utilities. Since Tucson AZ has over 350 days of sunshine each year this shouldn’t be a surprise. TEP’s renewable energy programs have generated awards and recognition.

TEP has developed 2 new rate plans for new users of roof top solar systems . TEP also ranks among the top 10 utilities nationwide for kilowatt hours per customer provided by solar energy.

Home Solar Units

Home solar power system costs have dropped 40 % over the last two years. As solar power system costs have declined, residential installations have grown.  A 53% increase during the first quarter of 2013. Followed by a 48% increase in the second quarter.

Data comes from GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association September report.

In 2014, TEP and UniSource Energy Services added 270 megawatts of solar capacity in 2014. The combination of solar power and wind power will power more than 110,000 homes for a year.

TEP’s Solar Program offers an easy and affordable way to meet your electric needs. TEP customers have the opportunity to buy this solar power on a monthly basis. But TEP is proposing higher charges and fewer credits for homes with rooftop solar.

To Go Solar Or Not To Go Solar

Customers can buy some or all of your power through the program. It will reduce or eliminate the use of energy from “conventional” resources. However, the solar power program will increase your electric bill.

While solar power in Arizona seems to be a no-brainer, it’s not. Arizona solar power is ground zero in a potential battle over solar energy incentives. The battle concerns the ability of homeowners with rooftop solar power systems to sell power back to utility companies.

At the core of the issue is whether or not utilities will be allowed to derail the decentralized “distributed generation” energy movement.

The use of “net metering” is a target for the Arizona Public Service. APS is Arizona’s largest utility. APS is battling solar power system installers over “net metering”.

Net metering allows homeowners to receive a credit on their electric bills for any excess electricity generated by their home solar panels.  These credits and the ability to offset future rate increases has been a driver for an increasing number of homeowners moving to Arizona solar power.

So what is the future of Arizona solar power? Well, it should be bright and sunny. Pun intended!

Before you pull the trigger on solar panels for your home, check out these considerations.

The Economics Of Solar For The Utilities

However, the question is at what cost? As homeowners install home solar power units on their homes it creates issues for utilities. Utilities suggest the grid is not made for receiving input from an ever increasing number of home solar power systems.

Utilities love big! Big coal power plants. Big nuclear power plants and Big solar power plants. Critics suggest utilities such as APS are trying to stymie home rooftop solar power.

As everyone knows, utilities are monopolies. Monopolies must maintain their hold on power generation from all sources. Remember personal computers vs mainframes?

Utilities must build larger centralized solar power plants to meet state renewable energy mandates. That mission is in conflict homeowners having home solar power systems.

Another issue related to having solar panels is are the solar panels leased, financed, or 100% paid for. If leased or financed, you the seller may have a problem when selling your home. Watch this video of a real life scenario when a buyer tried to buy a home with solar panels.

The battle has been started, but the outcome is uncertain. So if you are considering a home solar power system, take the time to understand the issues. And potential outcomes.

4th Avenue Tucson AZ

4th Avenue Is A Vibrant And Epic Place To Spend A Day

Its More Than A Monster Street Fair In Tucson AZ

4th Avenue Tucson AZ4th Avenue is famous for its street fair. The 4th Ave street fair is legendary. The twice a year event puts 100’s of artists and entertainment venues in one place. And the food options are off the charts.

But you should get past the street fair to discover what 4th Avenue is all about.

The “4th” has long been a happening place. Before Woodstock, 4th Ave Tucson was a place to hang out with the hippies. In the day, it was a few bars, places to get a burger and a little, might we say, substance to mellow out in the evening.

That was then. And although frozen in time since the 70’s, 4th has become a respectable place. In six blocks one can find shops, cafes, antique and furniture stores and local watering holes.

Oh, want to know where to a new “tat”? 4th Avenue of course.

The night life on the “Ave” is infamous. Located between the U of A and Downtown Tucson, its a bar hoppers paradise. From lounges to raucous bars, the 4th has them all. 4th Avenue offers an eclectic list of spots with great food, unique gifts, and local bars.

If you visit becomes a love affair, there are some quaint bungalows for sale nearby.

Tucson’s new light rail system makes getting to and from 4th Ave simple. Light rail connects the big three. Congress Street, Main Gate Square and 4th Avenue. Start in anyone of those places and you can get to the others in minutes.

Conclusion

Tucson has many great places to visit. And 4th Avenue is definitely one of them. Go for an afternoon of shopping and people watching. Stop in at one of the great local restaurants and have a great dining experience. Or stroll around and have a beverage of choice at an interesting bar or night spot.

One thing you won’t find on 4th Avenue is a franchise. None, zero, zip. All the “stores” on 4th Avenue are locally owned. Join the fun, make 4th one of you favorite places to shop, dine and refresh.

Moving Tips

Moving Tips To Get You Organized

10 Things To Put On Your Relocation “To Do List”

moving tips tucson10 top moving tips that will reduce the stress. Even a relative small home holds lots of things. Furniture, kitchen dishes and appliances, clothes, moments, pictures and lots of other item. Oh, not to mention the garage.

Only moving a short distance? Consider moving the smaller items yourself. Rent a truck, pack them up and move them to your new home.

For bigger items use a moving company. There are usually fewer big items than medium and small boxes. It may take a day or two to get everything to your new home, but could save you a lot of money.

Planning for a move can be a great family event. Get everyone in the family involved. Find tasks each person can do and use them tto create a “family team” event.

The time start planning a move is best begun as soon as you decide to sell your home. Some of the task required to get your home ready to sell will help the moving process.

Clear out closets, basements or attics. Getting it done early means there will be less to do once the home is under contract.

And if you are moving to Tucson remember one important thing. Most Tucson homes don’t have basements. So consider getting rid of as much of the “stuff” in your basement as you can.

Moving Plan Considerations

Moving out of state? Contact an interstate mover and the use of a large van. Also, shop moving companies. It is a deregulate industry and that means pricing is negotiable. To some degree anyway.

Moving internationally? The planning just more complicated. There are a host of considerations based on which country you are moving to. It is worth noting that some items common in the U.S. are not acceptable in a foreign country.

It will be worth the time to check with the embassy in Washington, D.C., for more information. Also, check on customs protocols, duties and taxes. You don’t want an ugly surprise to get your possessions into the country you are moving to.

If your move is local or a short distance from your present home you can lower costs by doing some of the work yourself.

Your moving checklist should include boxes, packing peanuts, blankets and padding. Oh, and don’t forget to reserve a rental van or truck.

Planning a move is key. Label each box with the type of contents, room it should go in and a number. Keep a list of each box by number and room.

Create a moving checklist that includes all the steps required. Moving is a big job and a moving checklist can make it more organized and easier.

How To Make Your Move Easier

#1 – Cash on hand. If you’re moving more than a few miles you will probable need some cash or credit cards for fuel, food and lodging.

#2 – Keep medicines and related prescriptions in a place where they can be reached during the move.

#3 – Number all the boxes so that all boxes can be counted on arrival. Make a list of boxes by number and indicate their contents. The movers will do this as well, but the ability to cross check each box can save a big hassle at your new destination.

#4 – When moving with children, have a favorite toy, games, music or other items for them to play with.

#5 – Identify all special handling items. For antiques or very special items you may want to hire a separate moving company specializing in these items.

#6 – Have contact phone numbers and your cell phone available. Just in case you need help or encounter a break down along the way.

#7 – Keep you laptop or notepad computer handy to check up on business and personal e-mail.

#8 – Last, but not least, be sure you understand the moving company’s insurance coverage. It can sound adequate, but be a disaster should a major piece of furniture be damaged or “not show up”.

#9 – And one more moving tip. For a long move, it may be less expensive when you contract through a moving company in your destination city. Based on seasons, some carriers aren’t as busy and will actually charge less.

#10 – Contact the local utility companies serving your homes and let them know the buyers name and contact information. Your Realtor can help you with this.

Move To Tucson

6 Secrets To A Successful Move To Tucson

Secret Number 1 On A Move To Tucson – Plan Ahead

move to tucsonMaking A Move to Tucson? Have you bought a Tucson home or planning to rent?

In either case, the next big decision is choosing the moving company yet.

This can be an easy or difficult task depending on how many times you have moved. And like other things in life, the first time is always the hardest.

Another key piece to a move to Tucson, or any where, is who is paying for the move. If you are writing the check, keeping costs down is important.

And whether this move to Tucson is your first move or “next move”, here are some things to keep in mind.

#1 – Plan Ahead

Long distance moves are a major life event. And the best way to make sure yours goes well is to plan ahead. Start the “mover” selection about 3 to 4 months before you move to Tucson.

#2 – Contact The Moving Company Office In Your Destination City

Contact the moving companies Tucson offices to arrange estimates for the move. Yes, the place you are moving to! Why?

Two reasons!

First, depending on the timing of your move to Tucson, it might be cheaper. Summer can be an “off” season for Tucson moving companies.

That means their pencils will be sharper and they deal a bit more. Not busy means more aggressive pricing, not good for them, but good for you!

Second, if something goes wrong or needs attention you can go eyeball to eyeball to resolve the issue. “Walking in” is a lot better than “long distance”.

Does this provide more “leverage” in getting the matter resolved? May be or may be not. But being able to resolve an issues face to face is far better than phones, emails or using Skype.

Also, using a Tucson moving company gives them a bit more incentive. A satisfied customer “in town” is a better endorsement than one in another state.

#3 – Slim Down

You most likely know this, but the weight of what you move effects the cost. So, slim down. Only move what needs to go.

Some furniture may look out of place in the Southwest. So sell it and buy furniture when you get to Tucson. Unless, of course, its a family heirloom.

#4 – Label Every Box And What Is In It

Be sure to label every box whether you or the movers are doing the packing.  Make a list of the items packed in each box on the outside.

Yes, the packers may grumble, but do it.

The packers are working for you. Also remember to mark what room the items should be place into in the new home. Markings like “dining room” or “master bedroom” will make unloading easier.

#5 – Know Your Rights

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulates all long distance moves. They publish a booklet Rights and Responsibilities. It describes a moving company’s responsibilities are and what your responsibilities are.

One of the most important decisions you need to make is in setting the value of your property.

Movers must provide compensation for items that get lost or damaged during transport. But the amount of compensation they offer varies a lot.

“Released Valuation Protection” comes included in every move. But it only holds the moving company liable for $0.60/lb. of each item. That means if an item weighing 30 lbs gets damaged you receive $18.

“Full Valuation Protection” adds coverage to your items. But you pay a higher fee for the increased coverage.

With it, the mover will repair or replace any lost or damaged item form the move.

Besure to ask your mover about valuation options and coverages. BEFORE you sign the forms, understand your risks.

#6 – Moving Costs May Be Deductible

Moving costs are often tax deductible if you are moving for work. So keep detailed records on all the costs you incure. Needless to say, if you get reimbured by your employer they won’t be.

If you can deduct them. You can save yourself quite a bit of money.

Check out this website to learn more about deductable moving expenses.

Plan For Your Pet When Moving

Don’t Forget to Plan for Your Pet When Moving

Make It A Stress Free Move For Everyone

Movig Your PetMoving with a pet is a challenge that comes with additional expenses. Make sure to budget for these, as well as extra travel time, especially if you’re moving across state lines.

Premier Tucson Homes offers up a bit of additional advice to help you make your move from there to here with ease, even when you’ve got a houseful of pets and no experience moving.

Planning Ahead

If you’ve yet to begin your home search, now’s the time to make a list of everything you need for your family and pets. You already know how many bedrooms and baths you need, but you must also plan for a fenced yard, which is crucial given the prevalence of coyotes and other predators in the area.

You can have a fence installed after closing, but keep in mind that this is an added expense (although some contractors offer discounts if you’re willing to pay ahead), and it might take days or weeks.

Read reviews and schedule a meeting to discuss capabilities, timing, and price before you move ahead with your fencing plans.

To Do List…

Something else to put on your to-do list: Contact your veterinarian.

In addition to a full health screening to ensure they are safe enough to travel, your vet can also talk to you about what to do about motion sickness.

Many dogs, especially puppies younger than one year, can experience vomiting and diarrhea in a moving vehicle. This is the last thing you want during an already stressful time.

When you are touring homes, don’t assume that you can bring your pet with you. Be courteous to the current homeowner, and have your realtor confirm that it’s okay ahead of time.

Moving Day and Beyond

Now that you have your house picked out, your dog examined, and motion sickness stopped before it starts, you can focus on moving day. If you think it’s stressful on you, your dog has no idea what’s coming.

If possible, visit the home ahead of the movers. This will give your dog a bit of time to explore without the distraction of new people coming in and out. You might also want to arrange for a dog walker or pet sitter who’s familiar with the area and gets great reviews for reliability.

Help your pet settle in by bringing along his pet bed. You’ll also want to make sure he’s got many of his favorite toys and a familiar food bowl — although it’s typically best to feed them on the light side during the big event.

Another important step toward making moving day less stressful is to keep your dog on their regular schedule. Even if you are moving into a new time zone, try to stay consistent with their feeding, exercise, and playtime routines.

At Your New Home

As you begin to get out and about in your new neighborhood, keep your dog on a leash. Remember, they may be overwhelmed by new sites, sounds, and scents and might get the urge to wander away.

BayDog offers tips on how to introduce your dog to new people and stresses that staying calm and being cautious around children is crucial.

The actions you take before and during a big move have a significant impact on you and your pets. So make sure to plan ahead so that you can get through all of the inevitable challenges.

Start by knowing what you’re walking into, especially if you’re moving to a new area that may have potential dangers you’re not used to.

If you still have questions, your buying agent can help you sort the details and may even have a few great recommendations on dog parks and other fun local activities to do with your entire family.

Dante’s Fire Cocktails And Cuisine

How To Enjoy Your Evening Out? Dante’s Fire On E Grant!

You Cant’ Tell A Book By Its Cover And This Tucson Restaurant Proves It Once Again!

Dantes Fire Cocktails and CuisineDante’s Fire Cocktails and Cuisine serves up excellent food from a scratch kitchen in an under whelming place.

Opened in an old Shakey’s Pizza place on East Grant Road in 2013. Dante’s Fire made an impact on the Tucson restaurant with unique small plates and tantalizing entree selections.

Oh, did I mention the cocktails? Unique and tasty! Have you had a cucumber martini lately?

Dante’s Fire should Be On Triple-D

Dante’s Fire is a place you see on Triple-D. For Food Channel junkies, that’s Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. But Guy Fieri has missed this one. And if he is smart, he will jump in his Camero and head for Tucson ASAP!

Dante’s Fire fits his show to a tee. Old Shakey’s Pizza place. A not very compelling facade. And located in a less than notable part of town. Inside, the decor is nothing to write home about, but a great and eclectic menu stands out. And Chef Ken Foy works magic in his scratch kitchen. OMG!

The menu is diverse, interesting, and excellent. In the “Anger – With A Little Kick” section of the menu are the spicy items. Full-sized entree selections appear under the “Atonement – Be Satisfied” menu section. Deserts are “Treachery – Do It, You’ll Love It” And of course, beverages of choice are under “Lust” and “Hersey”.

By the way, Chef and owner of Dante’s Fire won the Iron Chef Tucson competition in July 2022! Another reason to put this Tucson restaurant on your “must taste” list.
