And Southern Arizona is less likely to experience a natural disaster than anywhere else in the State! And don’t forget, homes in areas with natural disasters do not appreciate as fast as those without these risks.

But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. No place on Earth is ever 100% safe. However, as shown on the 2014 Natural Disaster Risk Map, Tucson and its surrounding communities rank low. The Blue star is the location of Tucson AZ.

Natural Disasters In Arizona

Map Legend – For four types of natural disaster: earthquake, hurricane, tornado, and blizzard. Dark Shading = high risk. Medium Shading = moderate risk. Light Shading = lower risk. But still significant over long periods of time.

Earthquakes

No Arizona earthquake in recorded history has caused any deaths or injuries. That’s not to say there haven’t been earthquakes in Arizona.

The most notable Arizona Natural Disaster was an earthquake that occurred in Mexico in 1887. The quake was near Bavispe, Mexico about 200 miles from Tucson.

Extensive destruction was done at the epicenter. The tremor made the ground move in Benson and Tucson AZ. Reports indicated ground movement as far away as Albuquerque NM.

The first significant earthquake known to occur within Arizona’s borders happened in 1906. The year of the great San Francisco earthquake. The shock was severe in Flagstaff.

In September 1910, the Grand Canyon area had a series of Arizona earthquakes. 52 earthquakes occurred between September 10 and 23, 1910.

Earthquakes in Arizona occur on the western border. Yuma has felt the effect of earthquakes centered in California. There was little, if any, damage.

There have been 19 Tornado’s recorded in Pima county between 1954 and 2006. Of these only 2 have been in the F-2 category. Only 1 death occurred from Tornado in Pima County. That was in 1974.

Weather

The weather in Southern Arizona eliminates a natural disaster due to a blizzard. But the area can experience high winds and heavy rain during the summer monsoons.

Flash floods do occur as the monsoon rain flows down off the mountains. Large Haboobs have been experienced starting at Red Rock/Casa Grande north through Phoenix and as far north as Cave Creek. The Haboob is created from the winds at the front of a monsoon storm. Haboobs create hazardous driving conditions but are not considered a natural disaster.

A study in June 2018 by Bloomberg News indicated home values in high-risk area for natural disasters have declined over the 2007 to 2017 period. Or increased less than low risk areas.

And based on the above information, Arizona is a low-risk area for natural disasters. Perhaps its time to start your Arizona home search.

What You Should Know About the Arizona Haboob

Seeing your first Arizona haboob can be a lifetime event. A haboob is a huge dust storm created from the airflow of a thunderstorm or intense shower. The winds driving the haboob will reach 30 miles per hour and blow dust up to 10,000 feet into the air.

Arizona haboobs occur during the summer monsoon season from July to mid-September. Along with Arizona, haboobs occur in New Mexico and western Texas.

The term “haboob” is from the Arabic language and means blown. A strong Arizona haboob can last for a few hours and travel over 100 miles. The winds moving a haboob can reach 50 mph and cause severe damage and power outages. Motorists should be aware of the possibility of a haboob and avoid driving in them.

Visibility is likely to be zero as the wall of dust overtakes vehicles. If you are driving and caught in a haboob, you should pull off to the right of the road. Turn off the engine and lights and keep your foot off the brakes. Wait it out until the visibility improves.

The greater Phoenix metro area is well known for haboobs. On July 5, 2011, one of the largest Arizona haboobs ever observed ocurred. The Phoenix haboob rose over 5,000 feet high. A wall of dust covered the entire Phoenix area from Apache Junction to Goodyear.

What creates an Arizona haboob?

Summer monsoons bring strong winds and concentrate down poors. As the monsoon thunderstorms collapse, they can create high outflow winds. The outflow winds cause gust fronts to form. The gust front picks up massive amounts of dust and sand which move up into the atmosphere.

Haboobs are common during the summer in the southwestern states. Summer thunderstorms create conditions that will spawn a haboob. The monsoons in Tucson create strong winds and heavy rain, but the winds do not have enough room to create a haboob.

Phoenix has 1 to 3 Arizona haboobs every year. Haboobs are also prevalent in Casa Grande, AZ, about 40 miles south of Phoenix. See the Fox News video of the Phoenix Haboob. Be Patient, it takes a few seconds to load.

What is often overlooked is that Arizona is the 6th largest state in land mass. Ok, not a big deal.

But now consider the elevation change between the north and south border. The north rim of the Grand Canyon is at 8,000 feet above sea level and surrounding areas reach 11,0000 feet.

In the southwest corner of Arizona sits Yuma. It is at an elevation of 141 feet above sea level

So what, you might say. Well, it snows at 8,000 feet, but not at 141 feet. Hmmm.

Does that mean people have lots of lifestyle choices in Arizona? Yes, in deed!

A Bit About Arizona

Arizona has more than 330 days of sunshine a year. Tucson has 350 days. That means there is almost never a rain out for any outdoor activity.

Arizona is the 6th largest area in the United States and the last state of the 48 continental states.

Northern Arizona has pine trees and snow. Cool temps in summer, cold in winter. Flagstaff gets over 100 inches of snow each year. With elevations hitting 11,000 around Flagstaff, skying and snowboarding is big.

15. Monsoons. The monsoon season is from early July to mid-September. When conditions are right, clouds build up over the mountains in the early afternoon. Then around 2 to 3 PM, it rains. Actually, it can pour. But not everywhere. One block can have a downpour, and across the street, the sun is shining. After the rain, more sunshine and a beautiful sunset.

16. NO Natural Disasters. Tucson and Southern Arizona aren’t known for natural disasters. During the monsoon season, there will be “sheet” flooding in some areas. But NO hurricanes, tornadoes, haboobs, earthquakes or floods. Tucson has felt the effect of earthquakes in Mexico and California, but none has been local.

A study in June 2018 by Bloomberg News indicated home values in high risk area for natural disasters have declined over the 2007 to 2017 period. Or increased less than low risk areas.

By the way, haboobs do occur in the greater Phoenix area. So, if you are considering Phoenix, stand ready during the summer monsoon season for the haboobs.

17. Fewer Bugs. Tucson’s elevation and dry climate make it a poor habit for bugs. Yes, there are gnats in the spring and occasional fly, but the mosquito is almost non-existent. Unlike most other areas, you can play outdoors and not have pesky little things flying around.

18. Nice People. Tucson is one happy place. People love it here and want to show everyone why. With few cloudy days and 350 days of sunshine, how could anyone be blue?

20. Winter Skiing On Mt. Lemmon. Yes, you can be skiing within 1 to 2 hours of Tucson during the winter. Mt. Lemmon, as an elevation of 9,200 ft has black diamond ski runs.

Mt. Lemmon is also a popular summer getaway. With the elevation, the temperatures will be 20 to 30 degrees cooler.

Monument Valley ArizonaMonument Valley was the backdrop for the movie Stagecoach. This western movie hit theaters in 1939 and put John Wayne and John Ford on the map in Hollywood.

The movie won two Oscars. The other significant outcome from Stagecoach is how it framed a vision of the American West.

After Stagecoach, dozens of western movie producers journeyed to Monument Valley AZ.  Ford returned many times during his movie making career.

John Ford made Monument Valley “famous”. But Harry Goulding was the person that persuaded Ford to go there.

Moment Valley is not a national park. It isn’t even a national monument. It is a Navajo Nation Tribal Park. An area covering northeastern Arizona and southwestern Utah. The Navajo Nation Tribal Park aims to preserve the Navajo way of life.

While many of us may recognize the Navajo Nation from the history of the old west. The Navajo culture has existed long before 1581. That is the date when the Spaniard explores came to what is now the southwestern United States.

Where Is Monument Valley Arizona?

The Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park is roughly 400 miles northeast of Tucson AZ. It includes northeast Arizona and Southwest Utah – MAP.

The small town of Goulding is the central point for visitors. In 1923, Goulding was an Indian Trading Post. Today the Town offers a complete range of visitor services.

Lets be clear. Visiting Monument Valley is not a day trip from Tucson AZ or Phoenix. You will need to stay over-night in Goulding or another city such as Flagstaff. Flagstaff is the largest city in the area and is about 175 miles away.

Why Visit Monument Valley, Arizona

First are the endless panoramic vistas. This place is a photographer’s dream come true. Bring the big lenses, tripod and stool. The colors of the reddish buttes and spires change throughout the day.

Without seeing it in person, it is impossible to grasp the scope of scene. Vast is the only word to describe it.

Second is bragging rights. Although Monument Valley is a one-of-a-kind experience, it doesn’t get a lot of visitors. Why? It is not a quick stop on your way to anywhere else. You have to want to go there.

But when you visit there, you will never be a boring guest at a cocktail party. Oh, put a few snaps on your mobile device just to show everyone you were there and what they have missed.

For The Adventurous

For visitors not wanting to just hang out at the hotel and visitor center there are options.

First is the 17-mile scenic drive. The road isn’t paved but provides and endless number of “OMG” scenic opportunities. Bring the camera! This is a self-guides tour and takes a couple of hours.

Second is a self-guided trail. A 3.2-mile trail, Wildcat Trail, will take you around the west Mitten Butte. The trail is an elevation of 5,400 feet. It takes about 2 hours to make the loop. You must stay on the trail. Oh, BTW, bring your own water and you are responsible for your own trash.

The third option is a day long trip with a Navajo guide. The all day guided tour takes you on trails in a four-wheel drive vehicle. It is bumpy but will justify why you got out of bed at 4 AM to meet your guide. Especially when you see Seven Sisters at sunrise.

A Word to The Wise

Monument Valley sits at an elevation of 5,500 feet about sea level. That means mornings and evening are cool and mid-day temperatures warm to hot. Bring your own water and layers of clothing to add or remove throughout the day.

One more thing! Ask permission before taking photos of Navajo residents and their property. Take some cash for the photo gratuity.

Please note – Northern Arizona (in general the Navajo) observes daylight savings time. . .  Southern Arizona, including Flagstaff does not. So, check the time at your destination the day before you head out.

Whether you are a resident or a visitor, Arizona has lots of places to visit. Based on where you are, or live, these can be easy day trips, over-night stays or weekend adventures.

Gadsden Purchase Of 1853

The Purchase That Brought Southern Arizona into The U. S.

It Changed the Landscape of The Southwest

Gadsden Purchase of 1853The Gadsden Purchase is one of the more interesting real estate deals made by the United States. Its sole objective was to enlarge the borders of the southwest United States. Doing that made it easier to build the Southern Pacific railroad.

History

In 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo established the boundary between Mexico and the United States. The border ran along the Gila River with all land to the south of the river belonging to Mexico.

James Gadsden was from South Carolina and the son of a revolutionary soldier, Christopher Gadsden. The senior Gadsden had been a statesman in South Carolina and soldier in the civil war. Both father and son held strong views on the rights of the southern states to govern themselves.

James Gadsden had also been a soldier under Andrew Jackson. His alliance with the many political figures of the time helps his political career. One such advancement was the appointment as the commissioner in charge of placing the Seminole Indians on reservations by President Monroe.

Railroads Moving West

James Gadsden had promoted railroads as the future for the south. His stanch promotion of railroads got him the position of president of the South Carolina Railroad Company.

Gadsden held a vision to create one railroad system from the patch work of small and individually owned railroad systems of the time. He dreamed of a transcontinental railway running from the southeast coast to the southwest coast. He felt having this railway system in place would tie the cities on the pacific coast commercially tied to the southern states instead of the northern states.

Unfortunately, to achieve that goal, the railroad would need to run through the U. S. territory that was north of the Gila River. That area was extremely mountainous and make the venture to expensive.

The most direct route for the railroad was south of the Gila River. Then part of Mexico. Undaunted, Gadsden set out to have the Federal Government acquire the land needed to build the railroad from Mexico.

The Deal With Mexico

With friends in high places inside the Government, Gadsden was able to receive an appointment as the U. S. Minister to Mexico by President Pierce. His instructions were to acquire enough land to build a railroad to the Gulf of California. He went to work immediately.

The territory to be acquired was basically a no man’s land in northern Mexico. In the mid 1800’s the area was hardly settled and experiencing frequent Indian raids.

Earlier in the history between the Federal Government and Mexico at the time, was the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, signed February 2, 1848.  This treaty had put closure to the Mexican war and ended Mexico’s claim to compelled to abandon its claim to Texas and the territory that would become New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah and Nevada.

Now, after the war and subsequent transfer of territory to the Federal Government, Mexico was in need of money.

Gadsden ceased the opportunity. In 1852 Gadsden agreed to pay Santa Anna, the Dictator of Mexico, $10,000,000 for a strip of territory south of the Gila River. The land included some 45,000 square miles in what now southwestern New Mexico and southern Arizona is. The purchase was finalized on December 30, 1853.

The Outcome

The Gadsden Purchase was so unpopular in Mexico that Santa Anna was over thrown as dictator and banished.

Gadsden was recalled as Minister to Mexico for mixing politics and domestic affairs. The up roar in the U. S. Government over the Gadsden Purchase stopped the Pierce administration from any further actions that would add more territory to the United States.

The territory acquired by the Gadsden Purchase in 1853 essentially completed the contiguous 48 states as we know them today.

Interestingly, Arizona petitioned Congress to be identified as a Territorial government that same year. One of the names suggested for the Territory was Gadsonia. Gadsonia is a Latin derivative for the name Gadsden.

Summary

The Gadsden Purchase expanded the southern boundaries of Arizona and New Mexico. The Southern Railroad was built and was key to settling the southwest.

Soon silver and gold would be discovered in southern Arizona and the territory would become one of the leading producers of silver, copper and gold. The gun fight at the OK coral in Tombstone AZ sparked the legend of Wyatt Erp.

Without the Gadsden Purchase, the second largest city in Arizona, Tucson, would be part of Mexico. With that, it is unlikely the University of Arizona would exist. With that, Kentucky may have won the 1997 NCCA tournament against ????.
