In 1931, residents of the Foothills organized the Catalina Foothills School District to serve the local school-aged population.  Murphey sold the school district the land for the first school building near East River Road and North Campbell Avenue, and Joesler designed the first school building. This building continues to house the school district’s administration.

Later In 1936, Joesler and Murphey completed the building of St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church.  The church sit at the corner of Campbell Avenue and River Road.   The church is widely regarded as a masterpiece of Spanish Colonial Mission architecture. The land for the church was donated by Murphey, and Joesler donated his services for its design.

Stone Canyon was established as a golf club community. Owning a lot and building a home required the homeowner to be a member in the Stone Canyon Club. The initial “down stroke” was $125,000.

Unfortunately the real estate market from 2007 to 2011 got in the way. The lofty goals of Stone Canyon Club could not be met. The club filed for bankruptcy in November 2013.

In 2014, Phil Mickelson and his business partner and agent, Steve Loy, took over the club’s ownership. Reportedly for $20 and the commitment of 85% of the members to stay in the club for 3 years.

And with that agreement the Mickelson group built a $4.0 million clubhouse. And greens rebuilt in 2017.

The golf course is an interesting layout with great views of the surrounding mountains, Oro valley and downtown Tucson.

This is a “don’t miss” course. Accurate drives are required and a few holes have blind tee shots. Well-bunkered greens require solid iron shots to score well.

A unique aspect of the course is its 19th hole. Golf hole not bar. A short par 3 intended as a tiebreaker for any “all square” matches.

Note – Arcis Golf, a Dallas based  golf course operator acquired the Stone Canyon Club from Phil Mickelson in July 2021. It and 5 other Arizona golf courses were part of a package deal.
