El Corral Tucson AZ

El Corral Restaurant in The Catalina Foothills

Serving Tucson Residents and Visitors for Over 75 Years

El Corral Tucson AZEl Corral restaurant has been serving Tucson residents since 1926. That is a long time for any restaurant to stay in business and should encourage you to go there.

El Corral is located just east of Campbell Avenue on River Road.

History

El Corral is most likely the first restaurant in this Catalina Foothills area. The El Corral restaurant has been at the same location since it opened some 75+ years ago.

Over time, renovations and modifications expanded the historic facility. But it is close in look and feel of the original buildings.

The original name for El Corral was the El Corral Cafe. Around 1946, the name changed to the El Corral Night Club. That name remained into the 1960’s.

In the early 1970’s the the Agro Land and Cattle Company bought the place and rename “El Corral”.

The restaurant continues to serve Tucson residents and visitor ever since. El Corral celebrated its 75th year in business in 2014.

Good Food

Needless to say, beef is what’s for dinner at the El Corral. Steaks and the the house specialty prime rib are the main stay of the menu. For those not into the beef, chicken, fish and salads are available.

There are also some real interesting side dishes. For instance the Tamale Pie which has been made in house since 1975.

Old West History Theme

The entrance feels as if you are about to enter a old stage coach house. Once inside, you are treated to a host of western memorabilia that includes clothes worn by Tom Mix. Tom Mix was a silent film star between 1909 and 1935.

Mix was in over 290 films during that period. In 1940 Tom Mix was killed in an automobile accident on Hwy 79 between Oracle Road and Florence AZ. There is memorial on the west side of Hwy 79 marking the location.

Tucson One Of The Next Great Food Cities

Food and Wine Magazine Recognizes Tucson as One of the “Next Great Food Cities!”

Another Reason to Live in Tucson, Arizona

tucson great food citiesFood and Wine Magazine is recognizing Tucson as one of the “Next Great Food Cities” in America. One of Seven smaller cities in the United States to make the list.

The designation is based on creativity, innovation, diversity, and deliciousness of America’s seven most exciting up-and-coming destinations for food lovers.

It’s an exciting time for food in America. The culinary landscape in cities around the country has matured in the past two decades. A shift that has been thrilling to experience and to taste.

During the last 2 years chefs and restaurateurs left big cities for smaller cities. Many of these smaller cities were communities where they crafted their trade.

It is these destinations that make up Food & Wine’s inaugural list of the next great food cities.

Smaller Is Better

Tucson is one of the seven exciting smaller cities that have big food scenes.

Tucson’s great food experiences are well known to those of us living in this great city.

But now Food and Wine is announcing it to the world.

Tucson is Arizona’s second-largest city. The city’s heritage means it is the land of flour tortillas.

In 2015, Tucson received the designation as a City of Gastronomy by UNESCO. UNESCO stands for the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

Many guidebooks have tourist-oriented spots like the 100-year-old El Charro Café.

El Charro’s history alone makes it worth visiting for a quick snack. Try the carne seca cheese crisp. It is a giant open-faced quesadilla with cheese and piles of desert air–dried beef.

But there are many less famous restaurants that not in guidebooks that make the food scene great.

Lets Begin

A top one is La Indita. This restaurant presents all the classics of a sit-down Mexican restaurant. But look a little further and you see some other great choices.

For example the fried Tarascan tacos, that honor founder Maria Garcia’s Tohono O’odham heritage.

With those yummy tortillas in mind, your first stop is La Estrella Bakery. Buy a package of tortillas. They are so fresh that you can eat them plain from the bag while driving.

And where should you be driving? Over to Anita’s Street Market. It is a tiny neighborhood shop with a charming backyard. It is the perfect spot to feast on their egg-and-cheese-stuffed breakfast burrito.

Craving for another bag of tortillas? Head to St. Mary’s Mexican Food. They make some of the best beans and rice in town.

Ready to push your palette? Tacos Apson is next for a solid bean-and-cheese burrito (or burros, in the local parlance).

To round out the day, finish at Taqueria Pico De Gallo. The quesadilla will make you think you are in heaven.

The Sonoran Dog

sonoran dogOk, now you are ready for a change of pace. The Sonoran dog!

This is a stalwart in Tucson. Sonoran dogs come stretched out on a soft bolillo roll. Each dog will comes loaded up with all manor of stuff. Pinto beans, chopped tomatoes, onions, mayonnaise, mustard, and salsa verde.

One fellow visitor observed, “it makes Chicago dogs look boring.”

Where do you find these beautiful “dogs”? Try either El Güero Canelo or BK Tacos. BK Tacos even offers a version made with a vegetarian hot dog.

Another spot, Ruiz Hot Dogs Los Chipilones, serves its dogs on a toasted bun.

Best Tacos In Tucson AZ

Finding The Best Tacos in Tucson AZ

Top 10 Mexican Restaurants for The Best Tacos in Tucson Arizona

Where Are the Best Tacos in Tucson AZ?

best tacos in tucson azRecently, one of our clients from the Midwest asked the question, “where can I get one of the best tacos in Tucson?”. Simple question, right?

We have lived in Tucson AZ since 2002 and we truly enjoy the abundance of restaurants. Many of them Mexican restaurants. But we had never thought of seeking out where to find the best tacos in Tucson AZ.

To answer our client’s question, we began a quest to find that best taco in Tucson AZ before they arrived for their house hunting trip.

What Are The Best Tacos In Tucson Made Of?

We started our quest by understanding what makes a great taco. A taco is a simple food item with three basic components.

  1. Tortilla. Tortillas come in two types – corn and flour. Corn is considered the more authentic choice. However, the flour tortilla is softer and tends not to break apart when biting into it. But wait, there are soft corn tortilla shells as well. For the completely uninitiated, a tortilla forms the bottom and sides of the taco.
  2.  Filling. A taco can be filled with almost anything that you can dream up. In Tucson AZ, taco fillings will traditionally be beef, pork, chicken, fish or shrimp.  These items may be shredded, sliced or chopped. The fillings will be marinated in a range of sauces to create flavor, a unique taste or mind-blowing spice experience.
  3.  Toppings. Salsa are a main stay for topping a taco. However, toppings have a life all their own. The standard topping options include, but are certainly not limited to: Salsa, chopped onions, cilantro, guacamole, sour cream, chopped cabbage (for fish and shrimp tacos only), and lime.

Easy….But They Are Not All Alike

One more thing, lets understand that you won’t find tacos on the healthy foods list. Great tacos are bad for you, but that’s why they are so really good.

Our search for the best tacos in Tucson considered local Mexican restaurants including the well-known El Charro restaurant as well as many small local shops throughout Tucson AZ.

Did we try them all – NO Way! It would have been the sequel to “super-size me”. It is also important to recognize, that like art, the best tacos in Tucson are in the eye of the beholder. Or should I say “taster” in this case.

The List Begins

Our list of the Top 10 local Mexican restaurants serving the Best Tacos in Tucson begins with the Food Networks top pick in Arizona for Americas tastiest tacos.

  1. El Guero Canelo – known for its Sonoran Hot Dog, but the tacos are terrific. Three locations in Tucson.
  2. Poco & Mom’s – Two locations – 1060 S Kolb Rd Tucson, AZ And 7000 E Tanque Verde Established in 2000, it is not well known, but serves good food with friendly service.
  3. Taqueria Pico de Gallo – 2618 S 6th Ave Tucson, AZ – a no-frills stucco taco shop that serves great Mexican street food in Tucson, Arizona
  4. St Marys Mexican Food – 1030 W Saint Marys Rd Tucson AZ – This place is mostly a take-out place. There are tables, but they fill up fast.
  5. La Botana Taco Grill and Cantina – 3200 N 1st Ave Tucson, AZ At corner of Fort Lowell – A Tucson local Mexican restaurant with vegetarian selections.
  6. Taqueria Juanitos – 708 W Grant Rd Tucson AZ just west of Oracle Rd – The purple store front makes this place easy to find. Just good food, good prices and good service.
  7. Casa Sanchez – Mom’s Mexican – 8320 N Thornydale Rd Tucson AZ just south of W Cortaro Farms Rd – Great Salsa for all the best tacos in Tucson.
  8. El Sur – 5602 E 22nd St Tucson, AZ – El Sur serves great food with authentic Mexican flavors at a quaint location and reasonable prices.
  9. Nicos Taco Shop – Nicos Tucson has 9 locations – No frills just quick and affordable good Mexican food. The breakfast burrito will keep you going all day.
  10. El Taco Tote – 1340 N Wilmot Rd Tucson AZ – Clean, friendly staff with fresh and delicious food.

Conclusion

There you have it. Our list of places to buy and savior one of the best tacos in Tucson. We hope you find one that will be on your Tucson Mexican restaurant favorites list.

The hotel is adjacent to the first downtown grocery store in many years (11 S. 6th Ave.) and slated to open up in December. The Johnny Gibson’s Market, leased by previous and current owners of Rincon Market, is to share a common area with the new hotel.

El Charro Cafe Tucson AZ

Experience Classic Mexican Cuisine at El Charro Cafe

Tucson’s Original Mexican Restaurant

el charro cafeEl Charro Cafe is a historic restaurant that opened in 1922 and is still owned by the original family today.
In fact, it is the oldest Mexican restaurant in the U.S. operated by the same family.

The original restaurant is in the heart of Tucson’s downtown neighborhoods.

El Charro Cafe encompasses all that is great about the Tucson community. Its classic Mexican cuisine continues to attrract generations of locals and visitors.

This distinguished Tucson restaurant originated the Chimichanga.

It is a staple at most tables. But the menu is broad and deep with other favorites.

How about a variety of enchiladas, fajitas, and tacos. Not to mention a salsa to die for and guacamole to put on ……everything!

What could be better?

All though the original El Charro Cafe is in downtown Tucson, there are other locations. You can find El Charro serving Mexican food in Oro Valley, Ventana and the Tucson Internation Airport.

El Charro Cafe 2014 Award

El Charro Café and its house special carne seca is in the list of America’s twenty-one best Mexican restaurants.

Thrillist stated, “They’re well known for their carne seca (dried beef), but you won’t be disappointed by any of their other dishes.

Every meal is prepared with the same care that has defined El Charro Cafe for over 90 years ago.

Thrilllist may not be the New York Times, but it has some legitimate creditability. It has operated from New York for over a decade and estimated to have some 10 million daily subscribers. And affiliated with two other online media channels Super compressor and Jack Threads.

All channels operate under the Thrillist Media Group umbrella.

Drunken Chicken Downtown TucsonThe Drunken Chicken opened its doors on August 14, 2017. A little hole in the wall restaurant on 4th Avenue.

Who would have “thunk it Virginia?”

But now the facts

This is a SMALL place. The dining area has red brick walls and simple tables and chairs. A total of 40 seats including bar seating.

It is a basic bar that serves food. Nothing wrong with that, but know what you are getting into.

And the “piece de resistance. Chicken and waffles. Have you figured out that Chicken is the specialty? It Is!

Now, you want some sauce? Well they have them. The bourbon syrup is addicting. Then there is the Marie Sharp’s habanero pepper sauce. You want hot sauce? Grab the comatose XXXXX level hot sauce. Matches not included.

Oh, and what do chickens lay? Eggs! Try the Fried Deviled Eggs. And interesting twist on mom’s party staple.

The Grill At Hacienda Del Sol

The Grill At Hacienda Del Sol – A Best Tucson Restaurants Review

In The Heart Of The Catalina Foothills – The Grill At Hacienda Del Sol

The Grill At Hacienda Del Sol Tucson AZThe Grill At Hacienda Del Sol is as distinguished as the history of the guest ranch itself. Opening in 1929, The Hacienda Del Sol was a desert retreat for the daughters of elite families.

Daughters from notable industrial families of the early 1990’s attended the prestigious Hacienda “ranch school”.

In the mid 1940’s, the Hacienda Del Sol guest ranch became a favorite of Hollywood’s elite. Tracy and Hepburn along with John Wayne and Clark Gable were guests.

Dining At Hacienda Del Sol

The Grill restaurant opened in 1997. And from day one, The Grill At Hacienda Del Sol made its mark as one of Arizona’s best restaurants.

The views from the Grill are of beautiful mountain and desert vistas. And twinkling Tucson city lights make an evening at The Grill a very special occasion.

At The Grill and Terraza Graden Patio & Lounge the service is exceptional. As are the food and beverages. The menu offers a nice variety of selections.

The Tough Decision – Elegant OR Casual

The menu at The Grill At Hacienda Del Sol is not extensive. Items are more traditional in preparation. Not trendy. But every dish is well prepared and flavorful.

From elegant dining in The Grill, to casual meals on The Terraza Garden Patio the food is exceptional.

And the Terraza Garden Patio has both an all day menu and a great happy hour. The happy hour menu includes everything from Street Tacos to big burgers.

From the time you meet the hostess the atmosphere is welcoming and comfortable. No rush during any phase of your meal or event. Whether you are at the Grill At Hacienda Del Sol for breakfast, lunch or dinner, it is a memorable experience.
