Outdoor Kitchen Design Ideas Using a Southwest Flair

Outdoor Kitchen Design Ideas Using a Southwest Flair

Perfect for Outdoor Dining

outdoor kitchen ideas tucson azThere is a growing tendency to take our cooking outdoors. We’re not talking about a backyard barbecue pit, but a full-scale outdoor kitchen.

We who live in Arizona and the surrounding US Southwest have ample opportunity to take advantage of outdoor kitchens.

You’ll want access to any number of modern appliances and conveniences. However, since it’s going to be outdoors, how might you incorporate a southwestern flair into the design?

Here are three themes that will make your outdoor southwest kitchen design feel like it belongs.

Accent the Aztec Artistry

The southwestern US is on the edge of the ancestral home of the Aztec Indians. While they occupied mostly what is modern-day Mexico, their influence filtered northward into parts of the US Southwest.

Even though most of the Aztec civilization lived in northern Mexico, blending their artistry in southwestern architecture is commonplace. It would be extremely appropriate to include such a theme as part of an outdoor kitchen.

The first concept to include in your blueprint for an Aztec outdoor kitchen is to be certain to incorporate space. Aztec architecture displays an open sense of structure placement. It was probably attributed to the large outdoor gatherings that were part of the culture.

This sense of openness in your outdoor kitchen will serve that purpose for you as well. As you begin to decorate your Aztec-theme, be sure to include a lot of pictorials. The Aztec remains still in existence today display many such symbolic representations.

Include eagles, frogs and other sea creatures, as they seemed to mystify the Aztecs. The Aztecs were big on turquoise in their art as well. You could add a number of sculptures around your outdoor kitchen to give off the Aztec cultural aura.

The conch shell is another readily visible design used in Aztec décor. The culture was enamored with elaborately colored pottery and massive displays of mosaic art. Doing a colorful mosaic floor and countertops will give your outdoor kitchen an aura of Aztec ancestry.

Bring the Pueblo Culture Alive

The Pueblo culture bleeds all across the southwestern US. Blending these native designs into your outdoor kitchen would be a perfect connection. The Pueblo Revival architectural influence spans all across northern Mexico and the southwestern United States.

The walls and backdrops in your outdoor kitchen could be earth-tone stucco. Corners on cabinets and countertops would be rounded to represent the architectural style of the Pueblos.

Timbers and framing were exposed in Pueblo homes and would add accent to your kitchen. There should be a lot of natural wood exposed and rustic. Colors in a Pueblo-themed outdoor kitchen would blend soft cactus-greens, burnt oranges and clay reds.

These Native Americans, like their ancestors the Aztecs, were very much into ornate pottery. Their cultural inclination was to cluster these types of items together in corners to help improve airflow around the home. Niches and figures carved into the walls would allude to a Pueblo aura.

The Pueblos used a lot of adobe in their homes, so adding sections into your outdoor kitchen will give it an authentic Pueblo appearance. Adding an adobe-built, beehive shaped horno in your Pueblo-themed outdoor kitchen would be the perfect complementary appliance.

These were the outdoor ovens used by the Native Americans. Tapestries were also a favorite of the Pueblo culture. They used them as decorative wall hangings, so adding these on the walls of your outdoor kitchen would be perfect.

The Wonderful Wild West

The southwest is home to a variety of tales about cowboys and Indians. Incorporating a Wild West theme into your outdoor kitchen will allow you to relive a wonderful time in history every time you prepare a meal or grab a snack.

The Wild West theme is one that offers a great deal of variety as well. You could include aspects of the rodeo, cowboys or items that portray the journey westward along the Santa Fe Trail.

You can even blend multiple cowboy-based ideas. Turning your outdoor kitchen into a look-a-like for a nostalgic western saloon is another marvelous touch.

You can include hitching posts for your towels, and swinging saloon doors for your cabinets. A long wooden countertop will give the aura of the old-fashioned, western saloon counter. One easy way to accent this type of outdoor kitchen is the types of cookware you add.

Iron Accents

The Wild West was known for cast iron. So adding this type of cookware is the perfect accent. Leather was big in the Wild West, so wherever you can include leather straps or leather-backed chairs is another idea to consider.

Bar stools in a saloon-style outdoor kitchen is the perfect seating arrangement. You can use old pine for the floors and cabinetry. Wood paneling, left with a course, rustic finish, gives your kitchen a truly western visual appearance.

Including the rustic look of ironworks into your southwestern outdoor kitchen is another great way to give off that Wild West appearance. Iron door hinges and handles accent rustic cabinet doors very well.

These are three outdoor kitchen ideas that give off that perfect southwestern flair. There are other designs that would work well, but these will help your kitchen look like it belongs in the southwest.

How to Bring a Southwestern Flair to Your Home Décor

How to Bring a Southwestern Flair to Your Home Décor

Tips And Tricks to Make It Work

southwestern decor and flairIncorporating a snazzy southwestern flair into your home décor is great if you live in this part of the United States or not.

Blending colors, furniture and other aspects of your home to fit with your architectural style is important.

Living in Arizona, it’s fairly obvious there aren’t many homes and buildings representative of early American colonial or ancient Greek architecture.

There are places symbolic of 17th century Spain, blended with the ancestral qualities of the indigenous peoples of the region. There is a great deal of evidence pointing to the Spanish influence on architecture.

However, the Baroque architectural style accents the Pueblo Revival architectural motif that’s predominant in the US southwest. Interior design strives to combine a perfect mixture of the inherent architectural style in line with the decorations of your home.

Here are some ideas on how to bring a southwestern flair to your home, whether you live there or not.

Cool Colors

A quick geographical review brings home one obvious point. Arizona, and the southwestern US in general, are situated in largely a desert type terrain. The color of the region is rich in earth tones and natural desert hues.

These inherent colors had an enormous impact on the decorative inclinations of the native people. A light cactus-green blended, with soft reds, helps the structures built by man blend into the landscape built by nature.

Since this is a warm-weather climate, cool colors with soft overtures are predominant. There aren’t a lot of cold, hard dark colors used in the southwestern decorative style. Yellows and light oranges also play an important role in painting the backdrop of your home as a portrait.

Many of these earth-tone colors artfully support the heavy use of regional foliage and plants in home décor. Peppers and other soft, green succulents help southwestern colors blend masterfully with the surrounding desert landscapes.

Hot Tchotchke

Tchotchke refers to inconsequential little decorative items from various cultures. Southwestern décor employs similar types of decorative little pieces around the home to add a personalized southwestern touch to the design.

While cool colors are predominantly used as a backdrop, many of the trinkets use flamboyant colors. A staple in southwestern interior design are the ceramics. Painted ceramic pottery was commonplace in the homes of the Native Pueblo peoples.

Rich red and orange peppers are dried and used as vibrant decorations. Dream catchers are also frequently seen in homes across the US southwest. These too are inherent to regions indigenous peoples.

They are often blends of intricate artwork and colorful feathers. A key difference between the decorative ornaments used across other cultures and the aura of the southwest is the tendency to spread things out more. Pottery is grouped together, and a single tapestry can be all that is used on an entire wall.

Supple Textiles

Textiles, many with Native American artistry, are prevalent in southwestern decorating. While many of the fabrics are sturdy, woven tapestries, they invariably blend soft and supple colors to help accent the southwestern color themes.

There is a great deal of leather used in furniture, plus colorful serapes are used as covers or as ornate wall hangings. Much of the leather furniture used in southwest homes coordinates an earthen, tanned color to provide a soft mixture with the rest of the pieces in a room.

While splendidly woven tapestries are a trademark of southwestern design, so too are the soft clay bricks and artistic tiles. Entry foyers frequently display artistic tile floors. Murals are often added to walls, pictorial voices that tell the history of the region.

Hard Iron

The Baroque era and Pueblo cultures each had a dramatic influence on southwestern style. However, the region didn’t start to become extensively populated until after the middle of the 19th century. A lot of construction and development filtered into the early 20th century as well.

While keeping with the primary foundation of regional architecture, the Age of Iron began to influence southwestern décor. Wrought iron gates and fences didn’t really fit the aura of southwestern architecture, but it did make its way into homes as decorative adornments.

Various types of wrought iron and steel ornaments are frequently used to accent rooms and wrought iron furniture is a favorite for southwestern patios. Iron racks are frequently hung on interior walls to provide space for the ceramic pieces.

Southwestern décor is used all around the world, but never more so than in the US Southwest. It blends both creative and decorative artistry with a blend of colors inherent to the region. You don’t have to live in a house built using Pueblo architectural style to incorporate this vividly beautiful type of interior design into your southwest home.

Luxury Kitchen A Post Pandemic Must Have

A Luxury Kitchen Is THE Remodel Again In 2022

Letting The Homeowners Personality Shine

luxury kitchen designsAmericans spent a lot more time in the kitchen since 2020. Kitchens were the command center for the household. The place to craft meals, hold Zoom happy hours and home school. Not to mention home office, family room and share the events of the day.

The increased usage of the kitchen’s space is making it a prime space for investment in again in 2022.

Top designers from across the country are seeing a common thread in light of this year’s events. They expect to see everything from simple color changes to major kitchen make overs.

Expect to see colorful cabinetry, more tile, and upscale details. The kitchen has always been an integral room in our homes

And A Kitchen Remodel Adds Value

Home sales data showed luxury kitchen “upgrades” added value when selling the home.

Six of the top 10 features mentioned in listings that sold for more than expected in 2020 were in the kitchen. And there are many kitchen styles that will add value to a home.

Two were bathrooms upgrades and one — “modern farmhouse” the other. In this case “modern” does not imply an outhouse situation.

Listings that mentioned “steam ovens” topped the list for price premiums. Homes with them sold for about 4.9% more than expected. Pizza ovens (3.4%), new appliances (3.2%), quartz (3.2%) — as in countertops.

Now lets understand one thing. This is empirical data. It isn’t meant to imply cause and effect. There are lots of factors that effect the sales price of a home. Both upward and down.

Buyers VS Sellers

Buyer’s perspective the features in a home to reflect that a home is cutting-edge and/or well-updated. And buyers wanting specific features may be willing to pay more for them when making an offer.

But bargain-hunting buyers may see such features as needing to pay more for a home. Ending up overpaying for a prior renovation that doesn’t suit them or for features they don’t want/need.

From a seller’s perspective, there’s a clear takeaway. If you’ve got these features in your home, don’t hide them from buyers! And if your home doesn’t have these features, don’t pretend it does.

Considering A Kitchen Remodel?

The luxury kitchen of 2022, will boasting streamlined design and no clutter.

But that doesn’t mean a minimalist design won’t be warm and inviting. Such comfortable feelings result from surface materials, finish selections and paint colors.

The right combination of countertops, backsplashes, flooring and paint make it happen. A thoughtful design of the modern kitchen allows the homeowner personality to shine.

And don’t forget that luxury outdoor kitchen. Bring the family home for each celebration.

Desert Colors For Your Tucson Home

Desert Colors for Your Tucson Home

Make Your Tucson Home Standout

desert colorsDesert Colors can be used to overcome space issues in your Tucson home. Every home endures some negatives. However, solutions don’t need to have high prices.

Search The Tucson MLS To Find A Tucson Home – Here!

Paint can be often-overlooked but provides the chameleon-like ability to lighten up, warm, expand, erase, or attract attention. Using desert colors can be a low-cost fix for many interior issues.

“Paint is  effective tool that will improve the architectural character and purpose of space or room,” says Minneapolis architect Petra Schwartze of TEA2 Architects. “As you choose your paint, think about what the experience in the room should be.”

Tucson is located in Southern Arizona and surrounded by the Sonoran Desert. Using desert colors in a Tucson home will enhance the indoor/outdoor lifestyles.

More advice

Always test paint colors on several walls. Don’t be bashful about painting some large swaths on walls. Try some desert color schemes in natural and artificial lighting.  Add samples to opposing sides of a room to gauge the paint color from different angles.

Check the space with the samples in place and see how the desert colors change at different times during the day.

Assess how you feel to the proposed desert color schemes. Does the space feel more cozy or open with certain desert colors? Many desert colors are warm. They will trend bring the outdoors inside. Also, using local landmark colors enhances the transition from indoors to outdoors.

Tucson weather has around 350 days of sunshine. So, the desert colors to be used on walls where the light is coming in.  Also, most homes have textured wall surfaces. Stay away from desert color schemes using high-gloss paint sheen.

How to enlarge space with color

Painting walls white, cream, pastels, or cool colors (tinged with blue or green) creates the impression of extra space by reflecting light. Paints with a desert sand color can be very good. Paint trim similar to walls (or use white on trim) to create a seamless look. It will  visually expand the space.

White or light colors lift a ceiling; darker shades will have a similar impact if you choose a high-gloss paint sheen, which reflects light and enhances space.

Use a monochromatic scheme to amplify the size of a room. Pick furnishings in one color and paint walls and trim to match. The lack of contrast will make a room seem much more spacious.

Make walls appear higher by extending wall color to on ceiling. Create a 6- to 12-inch-wide border of wall color on the entire ceiling perimeter. Do this wherever walls meet with the ceiling.

Vertical and horizontal stripes of alternate desert colors will make a room grand. Vertical stripes boost room height by drawing the eye upward.  Horizontal stripes lure ones gaze around the perimeter. This will make walls seem further away. Using similar light colors for low-contrast stripes will make a room look even bigger.

Creating intimacy

Whenever a space feels cavernous use warm colors to draw walls inward. This will make the room more comfy. Warm colors with darker hues  (red-tinged) will soak up light.

Similarly, a dark or warm color overhead (in a flat finish) can make rooms with high or vaulted ceilings less voluminous.

Creating a Peaceful Surrounding

The right desert colors paint will lend tranquility to a bathroom, master suite, or other quiet space. A painted desert color palette of soft, understated color or hushed tones enable you to instill a calming atmosphere. Some good choices include pale lavenders, lighter grays or greens, and wispy blues.

Define your assets

Call out notable features in a room with paint in contrasting desert colors. Dress crown moldings and various trims in white to help make them pop alongside walls with color. Make a fireplace or other feature a focal point by painting it a color that contrasts with walls.

“Utilizing a higher sheen of paint on woodwork, such as baseboards and door or window casings,” says Schwartze, “creates a crisp edge and clear transition from the wall to the trim.”

Hide flaws

Not everything should stand out in a space. Using a low-contrast palette of desert colors is a good way to hide unappealing elements or flaws. Conduit, radiators, and other components painted the same color as the wall will seem to disappear.

Selecting low-sheen or flat paint colors also helps hide flaws. Unless walls are smooth, avoid using high-gloss paint because it reflects light and calls attention to an uneven surface.

Hopefully, this will help Tucson home buyers see how a great deal can be a wonderful home without lots of extra costs. Are your moving to Tucson or looking for Tucson houses for sale? We can help!

Southwest Homes

Decorating Tips On What NOT To Do For Southwest Homes

16 Great Tips On How NOT To Decorate

southwest homes decorFor many Tucson home buyers decorating their new is a new adventure. They’ve relocated with the excitement of living in their new southwest home.

The architecture of Arizona homes is different from other parts of the country. Spanish influences are seen everywhere. Classic features include tiled or flat roofs, parapet walls, and viga beams.

And in Tucson, you will find homes built with mud adobe walls. A few over 100 years old.

Even new subdivision embrace the “old west” and the style of the southwest home. But how does someone from Wisconsin, New Jersey or Washington create that “southwest” feel.

So how does a new comer to the Southwest know how to decorate their new house?

Consider Colors And Textures

One reoccurring question is “Why are the Southwestern interior paint colors very warm?” The answer is pretty simple. Bright and bold colors resembles the colors of the Mother Earth.

Turquoise and blue-green colors reflect the sky. Orange and yellows reflect the desert.

Why do southwest homes use a variety of wood in their homes. Simple. It was an abundant material in the high plateaus where they lived. The Rocky Mounts of Arizona and New Mexico provided a lot of different species of trees.

The wood provides natural color that can remain for decades. But a southwest decor will add traditional Southwestern coloring to the furniture.

For example, we can use cream, lime green, or white color to paint the table, armories, or other stuffs. But keep in mind that the colors should look warm.

Lets circle the wagons and find out what To Do & Not Do

southwest decorA recent HGTV article identified 16 decorating mistakes found in southwest homes today. The identified decorating mistakes were

  1. Decorating southwest homes using cut to fit toilet rugs. (Often times seen with matching seat cover.) Big sanitary turn-off! Instead use a rectangular rug placed away from the toilet.
  2.  Decorating southwest homes using too many personal photos. Rule of thumb, group no more than 3 per area. Put the rest of your photos of family, friends and trips in a photo album.
  3. Forgetting to add some southwest color in your foyer. Add some southwest color, hang a piece of southwest art or a southwest mirror. Tucson offers a host of wonderful artists. Find one and choose a piece of southwest art that represents you.
  4. Decorating southwest homes using out-of-place themes. Forget decorating an entire room with a theme. Instead only use accent pieces of what you like. When you have a home in the desert but love the beach, accent a bookshelf with a few seashells. Avoid decorating an entire room with a beach-style.
  5. Decorating southwest homes using outdated accessories. Make small changes like switching out the hardware on your cabinets. It makes a big impact!
  6. Decorating southwest homes by keeping something you hate. When it comes to your home, like the ugly contractor grade light in your bathroom, get rid of it. Donating it to charity. Habitat for Humanity will even pick up your items for free; besides, it’s a great cause.
  7. Decorating southwest homes while having visible clutter. Organized and uncluttered are part of a southwest home style. This is a keep it simple world.
  8. Decorating southwest homes when everything matches. This style might be found in a catalog but it’s designed that way to sell furniture; people don’t live that way. Make your southwest home more eclectic and not like a showroom you can’t live in.

We Are Half Way There

  1. Decorating southwest homes with furniture that doesn’t fit. Remember showrooms are much larger than your living or family room. Draw the room you’re decorating to scale and place the pieces around for the best layout. Don’t put too much in any space!
  2.  Decorating southwest homes and the area rug is floating. Big mistake! Before buying a rug, tape off the area you want covered. Remember, a rug should connected to furniture so it anchors the room. Don’t be afraid to put the rug sideways. For a successful arrangement, put all the front feet of the furniture on the rug.
  3. Decorating southwest homes using improper lighting throughout. Different types of lighting and adding dimmer switches is a great way to create the mood you want. Remember your room’s function when choosing your proper light.
  4. Decorating southwest homes and you’ve hung your art too high. Generally you should not look up to art whether you are sitting or standing. Eye level is the right height. A good rule of thumb for hanging artwork over a sofa is the bottom edge should be about six inches up from the top of the sofa.
  5. Decorating southwest homes with furniture up against the walls. Create a focal point in the room and bring the sofa to that focal point area. Example, move the sofa in front of a fireplace and put a console table behind the sofa. It will enlarge the space!
  6. Decorating southwest homes with a fear of color. Come on, we’re in sunny Tucson where color is a great punctuation. Wall color will appear different throughout the day. Make sure your color choices works with the space and day time sun.
  7. Decorating southwest homes with too many knickknacks. Call it what you want; tchotchkes, keepsakes, decorations, we all have too many! Again the rule of thumb, group no more than 3 per area and store the rest if you can’t give it away

And Number 16

  1. Decorating southwest homes with fake flowers. Controversial topic I know, but fake flowers and plants are a mistake. Bring life into your home whether its flowers or fruit in a bowl. It adds a natural punch of color.

Bathroom Remodel Ideas

Bathroom Remodel Ideas

5 Tips To Increase Tucson Home Values

bathroom remodel ideasBathroom Remodel Ideas will be advertised this month since October is National Kitchen and Bath Month.  America’s most popular home improvements are bathroom and kitchen makeovers.

Bathroom remodeling ranks with kitchen renovation as one of America’s most popular home improvements. Why? Most likely because the return on investment is higher than any other remodel.

Bathroom remodel ideas can cost a lot or a little based on what you do. A simple spruce-up for a new vanity top, light fixture and accents can be done for well below $1000.

Choosing to yank everything out and start from scratch is a different story. A complete bathroom upgrade can cost $10,000 or more. Also, bathroom remodel ideas for a small bathroom will cost much less then for a large one.

Use these 5 bathrooom remodel ideas for a better space and to add value to any Tucson home.

1. Identify your specific bathroom short comings.

Do you need to expand your bathroom?

Do you need an additional sink?

Would you like to add windows?

Will the bathroom flooring need to changed?

Think about your ideal bathroom. Visualize what it will look like. Then prioritize your bathroom remodel ideas into needs and wants.

2. Review bathroom remodel ideas from many sources.

Some architectural plans will definitely make it easier. Easier for you to identify what you really want. Easier for your renovation contractor to visualize the finished project. Almost any design planning will be helpful.

You may choose to consult an interior designer for suggestions. The lower cost approach is to review Tucson home design magazines. Cut out the ideas, designs and photos that look like what you want.

Use the bathroom remodel ideas you find to make a sketch on graph paper of what your plans are. If you choose a designer, they will do this for you.

Photos and sketches will make it easier to present your bathroom remodel ideas to contractor doing the work.

3. Set a realistic bathroom remodel ideas budget.

Before starting any work, you should estimate the cost of the bathroom remodel. Once set, determine how you would fund the project.

Do you have the funds or will you need get a loan? Borrowing to complete your bathroom remodel ideas will add to the overall project costs.

Are youa big remodel or are you making modest changes? When establishing your budget consider the design and style concepts you want. Do they fall on the conservative or pricier side.

Not relocating plumbing for toilets, sinks, bathtubs and showers will keep costs down. If you are on a tight budget base the new design on your existing bathroom layout.

4. Don’t forget building permits.

Before beginning any remodeling remember to secure a building permit. In most cases your contractor will go city or county government for you. Failure to get the correct permits will most likely cause you a problem later. Specifically when you want to sell your home.

A listing agent will review whether or not permits were obtained for that remodeled bathroom. To properly list you home you will need to get the permits and have inspections done. Those costs and any related penalties will need to be paid before listing your home.

5. Consider current bathroom design trends.

Extra sinks are almost a “must have” today.  Double sinks in the master bathroom should be included in any remodel.

Another consideration to include in your bathroom remodel ideas is isolating the toilet from the rest of the bathroom.

If you only have a shower, give consideration to replacing it with a bathtub and shower. While whirlpool bathtubs are popular in the modern bathroom lots of space is required to do it right. In most cases plumbing changes will be required adding to the costs.

Nearly everyone decides to add a bathroom exhaust fan, often including a heater on a timer, as well.

Southwest Decor

Southwest Decor from Furniture to Accessories

Tips For That Perfect Southwest Style

We’re big fans of all things that create a southwest decor. From furniture to room accessories and art. Each room needs a focal point.

southwest decorAnd rugs, pillows and art are essential. But finding the right rug for your main living area will “set the stage” for the rest of your home.

If you are starting with a blank slate, the task is easier. Pick a rug that complements the color of the flooring and build on it.

The task is more difficult when the home has furniture and paint.

Rug patterns can be complex, and it can hard to find a rug that matches the other pieces of furniture.
But when you find the right one, don’t hesitate. Buy it!

Southwest decor for the master bedroom

Southwest Decor Bedroom ColorsThe master bedroom is the most personalized area in a house. So, what colors can be used in a Southwest Decor and provide a relaxing master bedroom area?

Let the colors you love provide your Arizona interior design. However, here are a few guidelines to keep in mind in your bedroom decorating ideas.

Today’s master bedroom suites tend to be typically larger than the other bedrooms in a home. The extra space will make most southwest decorating ideas easier.

Space means the bedroom decorating ideas can use more color options. Using multiple color combinations and layers will create a distinctive Arizona home with a personal look.

Master bedrooms with an on suite and a sitting area give you lots of space. A useful tip from Tucson interior designers is to create a color plan for all the space in total. Don’t break the space up by using conflicting colors.

That doesn’t mean the paint colors for the bedroom and bathroom southwest decor must match. Match NO. However, they must complement one another.

Incorporate the accent colors from one room into a joining space. This creates a southwest decor with a unified look.

Consider the feeling you want to set within your master bedroom. The focus for Tucson design is to create a space to be a tranquil retreat with soothing colors.

A Neutral Palette OR Not?

If you are considering selling your home, stay with neutral colors. Bold colors can scare buyers away. Even though we all know changing wall colors is pretty easy.

The good thing about a neutral palette is it allows you to change out accessories to change the mood.

But southwest decor means color. Vibrant bold colors.

So Lets Talk Colors

southwest decor colorsThe native American and Spanish believe that colors can protect against evil spirit. The proof is in the colors used in most of Southwestern interior designs.

One reoccurring question is “Why are the Southwestern interior paint colors very warm?” The answer is pretty simple. Bright and bold colors resemble the colors of the Mother Earth.

Want a southwest decor with more color on the walls? Let your passions be your guide.

Turquoise and blue-green colors reflect the sky. Orange and yellows reflect the desert.

Love green? Green is among the better colors for bedrooms. It provides both warm and cool feelings. There are also many tints to choose to get it “just” right.

Green also enhances the furnishings in the room.

And green also look great in a living area or family room. Southwest decor can include modern, traditional or eclectic style furniture.

Green, along with pops of complementary colors, shows well on either painted or bare wood furniture.

On the other hand, a little red will do ya! Red can be used in any room, but with caution. Red is a color that stimulates. Using too much of it can be very overwhelming. If red is your color, try a muted tint.

Or consider using red on just one wall. A wall behind large furniture or a wall with large windows. Windows will break up the strong color.

Bare wood furniture will likely not go well in a room with pure red walls. It can clash. It is usually better to go with painted pieces.

The suggestions for red also hold valid for yellow. Softer tones will be more calming, and you wouldn’t want to select too bright a shade in the bedroom.

Artwork

Southwest decor PotteryCool and soothing Blues are a natural for southwest decor. This area of the palette is soothing and cool. Using deeper shades of blue in traditional creates a stately backdrop for antiques and classic furnishings.

Most artwork will standout against deeper shades of blue. There are lots of muted and pale tones of blue that produce a softer look for those who don’t want a dark color on their walls.

That doesn’t mean that a bright or dark color has no place in southwest decor. A palette of neutral shades will create a look with opportunity at add pops of color. Bed linens, pillows, lamps and other accessories can be used for that perfect spark of color.

Oh, and don’t forget about that outdoor landscape. Flowers, cacti and desert plants will create a background for the inside decor.
