What is Food City?
Food City is a Hispanic niche food market owned by the family that owns Basha’s and A.J.’s Fine Foods. Food City was acquired by Bashas’ in 1993.
Food City offers a full range of Hispanic ethnic food and indulgences. Even though there is nothing in the name to indicate it, Food City markets focus on Hispanic foods, spices, fruits and vegetables.
Food City is truly a super mercado ( market in Spanish ) and can be a bit intimidating for shoppers that have only experienced Safeways, Fry’s or Whole Foods Markets.
Choices, Choices, Choices
You can buy cooked carnitas by the pound along with chile rellenos, burritos and tacos to go. At a Food City, you can discover some very unique specialties such as a chile relleno burrito. Bueno!
Food City is also the place to find a variety of Mexican cheeses. While not on every ones grocery list, there is a wide selection of innards. If you have a recipe that calls for a beef heart, Food City is likely to have it.
The bakery area and hot food counter has its own checkout. So if you want something to go, it beats the check out lines. Unfortunately the primary checkout lines can get very long.
The produce sections display the produce in baskets instead of on shelves. Perhaps a through back to the way many local grocery stores in “old Mexico” did business. Food City stores may not be for every one, but one thing is true.
