6 Secrets to A Successful Move to Tucson

Secret Number 1 On A Move to Tucson – Plan Ahead

move to tucsonMaking A Move to Tucson? Have you bought a Tucson home or planning to rent?

In either case, the next big decision is choosing the moving company yet.

This can be an easy or difficult task depending on how many times you have moved. And like other things in life, the first time is always the hardest.

Another key piece to a move to Tucson, or any where, is who is paying for the move. If you are writing the check, keeping costs down is important.

And whether this move to Tucson is your first move or “next move”, here are some things to keep in mind.

#1 – Plan Ahead

Long distance moves are a major life event. And the best way to make sure yours goes well is to plan ahead. Start the “mover” selection about 3 to 4 months before you move to Tucson.

#2 – Contact The Moving Company Office In Your Destination City

Contact the moving companies Tucson offices to arrange estimates for the move. Yes, the place you are moving to! Why?

Two reasons!

First, depending on the timing of your move to Tucson, it might be cheaper. Summer can be an “off” season for Tucson moving companies.

That means their pencils will be sharper and they deal a bit more. Not busy means more aggressive pricing, not good for them, but good for you!

Second, if something goes wrong or needs attention you can go eyeball to eyeball to resolve the issue. “Walking in” is a lot better than “long distance”.

Does this provide more “leverage” in getting the matter resolved? May be or may be not. But being able to resolve an issues face to face is far better than phones, emails or using Skype.

Also, using a Tucson moving company gives them a bit more incentive. A satisfied customer “in town” is a better endorsement than one in another state.

#3 – Slim Down

You most likely know this, but the weight of what you move effects the cost. So, slim down. Only move what needs to go.

Some furniture may look out of place in the Southwest. So sell it and buy furniture when you get to Tucson. Unless, of course, its a family heirloom.

#4 – Label Every Box And What Is In It

Be sure to label every box whether you or the movers are doing the packing.  Make a list of the items packed in each box on the outside.

Yes, the packers may grumble, but do it.

The packers are working for you. Also remember to mark what room the items should be place into in the new home. Markings like “dining room” or “master bedroom” will make unloading easier.

#5 – Know Your Rights

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulates all long distance moves. They publish a booklet Rights and Responsibilities. It describes a moving company’s responsibilities are and what your responsibilities are.

One of the most important decisions you need to make is in setting the value of your property.

Movers must provide compensation for items that get lost or damaged during transport. But the amount of compensation they offer varies a lot.

“Released Valuation Protection” comes included in every move. But it only holds the moving company liable for $0.60/lb. of each item. That means if an item weighing 30 lbs gets damaged you receive $18.

“Full Valuation Protection” adds coverage to your items. But you pay a higher fee for the increased coverage.

With it, the mover will repair or replace any lost or damaged item form the move.

Besure to ask your mover about valuation options and coverages. BEFORE you sign the forms, understand your risks.

#6 – Moving Costs May Be Deductible

Moving costs are often tax deductible if you are moving for work. So keep detailed records on all the costs you incure. Needless to say, if you get reimbured by your employer they won’t be.

If you can deduct them. You can save yourself quite a bit of money.
