A City Built On Railroads, Cotton And Ruins
Coolidge owes its modern development to the expansion of the railroad. As the Southern Pacific pushed eastward many town sprang up along the routes.
Coolidge was one of them. The City’s name comes from President Calvin Coolidge.
Along with the railroads, the construction of a dam that turned sandy soil into rich farm and ranch land. And cotton became king in Coolidge.
It remains the hub of Arizona’s cotton industry.
The city’s early days of the city are in the Coolidge Historical Society Museum. Many historical artifacts and photographs from the 1920s to the 1950s.
Coolidge is also known for modern pop history. A honkytonk bar named the ‘Gallopin’ Goose Saloon & Grill opened there.
This historic bar boasts a tribute wall to country icon Waylon Jennings. Jennings launched his solo career at the Gallopin Goose after Buddy Holly’s death.
