Lake Mead

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Scenic Spot For Water Sports In Arizona

Lake Mead Arizona NevadaLake Mead is a man-made lake that lies on the Colorado River. It got its name after Elwood Mead. He was the commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1924 to 1936.

The years when the planning and construction of Hoover Dam took place.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area replaced the “Boulder Canyon Project” in 1947.

The northern most point of Lake Mead is about 24 mi from the Las Vegas Strip. But its southern waters are in Arizona.

It is the largest reservoir in the United States based on water capacity. Lake Mead is the result of building the Hoover Dam in 1935.

Water from Lake Mead servers the states of Arizona, California and Nevada. Water from the lake is, with some surprise, supplied all the way to Mexico.

Its A Big Lake

It has more than 750 miles of shoreline. That provides visitors a day at the beach and boat rides into little coves. Or the opportunity to catch a big one.

South of Lake Mead you find Lake Mohave. The combination of these three water masses creates Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

At the southern end of Lake Mohave you find Cottonwood Basin. It is the southern most body of water and in the state of Arizona at Bullhead City. This small Arizona town is about 3 hours from the Grand Canyon.

Visitors come for boating, fishing, jet skiing, camping, and swimming.

Hiking and outdoor activities extend year round as the weather is usually sunny and hot. But understand, the midsummer temps are scorchers.

The scenery is impressive. Clear blue water beneath gaunt rocky cliffs. But boats are the mode of transportation to get to best scenes.

There aren’t many paved roads to get you there. But by boat, the sheltered coves offer empty beaches for camping and splashing around. Much of the land surrounding the lake is open desert and not very scenic.

The Bad News

In recent years the amount of water in the lake has decreased due to drought. The reservoir is less than 40% full and the surface level has fallen by over 100 feet.

Declining water levels forced marinas and boat ramps to relocated to other areas on the lake or close.

By The Way

It may seem odd, but Arizona has more boats per capita than any state in the United States. And if you live in Tucson AZ it is only a 6 hr drive to San Diego and the Pacific Ocean.

Roosevelt Lake is northeast of Phoenix and about 2 1/2 hours from Tucson. So if you like boating and water sports don’t rule out Tucson, AZ.
