The Ventana Canyon Golf Courses are located in Ventana Canyon. It is one of the most beautiful canyons in the Santa Catalina front range. And one of the least visited.

Why?

The trail head is somewhat hidden in Ventana Canyon Resort employee’s  parking lot. Another reason is it is a tough climb. The front range trail includes several sections of steep and rocky switchbacks.

In Spanish, Ventana means window. And in this case the “window” is a 15 by 25 foot opening in solid rock. It rests at one of the peaks in the Santa Catalina Front Range.

Ventana Canyon Golf And Racquet Club is a member owned club with two 18 hole golf courses.

The Lodge at Ventana Canyon sits against the backdrop of the Santa Catalina Mountains with 50 luxury guest suites. The Lodge has been a prestigious AAA Four Diamond property for years.

The two 18 hole courses created by Tom Fazio wind through the foothills canyons and arroyos. Both courses, Mountain and Canyon, have received awards and accolades.

These courses are a “must play” for any golfer visiting Tucson, AZ.

Each of the Ventana Canyon golf courses challenge a players ball striking accuracy.

Member play alternates between the two courses daily.

This creates a “members course”. Resort play is on the alternate course. The other course is available to resort guests and some daily fee play.

A driving range, two short game areas and putting green will help you hone your skills before taking the first tee. For non golfers, the facility provides eleven lighted tennis courts. The tennis facility and a fitness center are available to members.

Majestic saguaro cacti are on most fairways. But Ventana Canyon Golf is not your typical desert target golf. Fairways are relative wide and green accessible. But elevation changes and large rolling greens create some interesting shots.

The Mountain Course

The Mountain Course is know as one the most difficult course in Tucson. Some suggest one of the most difficult in the entire state.

The Mountain course climbs up the Santa Catalina foothills. The highest point on the golf course is signature third hole.

The Mountain course has lots of elevation changes and is definitely not a walking course. And the views of Tucson and surrounding mountains are outstanding.

Approach shot need to be precise. But getting on the green is when the battle begins. The greens are fast, but true. But because the course is on the side of a mountain, the greens are very hard to read. The mountain is a major factor in getting the ball into the hole. ‘

The Canyon Course

But the Canyon course takes a different route. The front nine winds down through the Esperrero Canyon.

Fun course, but hilly. Many elevated tee boxes with awesome views, some with awesome hills to climb to get to the tee box! The mountain has a huge effect on putts! The starter will warn you and it doesn’t take long to become a believer!

As you make the turn to the back nine, you see the iconic Whaleback Rock to the left of the green. It forces you to play to the right and into the large bunkers.
