The 3 nine hole courses wind through the SaddleBrooke HOA 1 community. The original 18 holes were the SaddleBrooke and Tucson nine holes, opened in 1994.

Each of the 9 hole courses has tree-lined rolling fairways. Tee shot placement is at a premium due to frequent out of bounds areas. Greens are large and terraced. Those longer lag putts demand a delicate touch.

The three 9 hole courses are SaddleBrooke, Tucson, and Catalina – MAP.

SaddleBrooke Nine

The SaddleBrooke Nine at the SaddleBrooke Golf Club underwent a renovation in 2010. This nine hole course segment requires accurate shot making. Tight driving areas and out of bound areas confront the player. Large greens with numerous tiers make putting a challenge.

Tucson Nine

The Tucson Nine is the most difficult of the three SaddleBrooke Golf Club courses. But the views of the Catalina Mountains are outstanding.

Green side bunkering is severe. Deep bunkers to sloping greens will challenge everyone’s game. The Tucson Nine underwent renovation in 2011.

Catalina Nine

World Golf Championships

This WGC tournament brings together the 64 top-ranked players in the world each February. This Dove Mountain resort destination golf course is layout with elevation changes from 2,300 to 3,000 feet.

The Golf Club At Dove Mountain was originally the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club. Under the Ritz Carlton name, the course served as the host venue for the WGC Match Play Championship from 2009 until 2014.

This course holds the distinction for being the longest venue in PGA Tour history, playing at a length of 7,849 yards. The club is designated as a Jack Nicklaus Signature golf course with 27 holes.

The green complexes were heavily criticized by players during the 2009 Accenture Match Play. This led to several top names demanding the reconfiguration of the greens. But by most standards the greens are “at best” difficult.

Each green has 4 or 5 “zones” with lots of contours and elevation changes. Put you ball in the wrong place and expect 3 or 4 putts.

Fairways are generous, but strategically placed bunkers are there to catch the errant shot. Fairway bunkers and green side bunkers are steep faced. Players better bring their “A” game to get back in play and save a par.

Most of the greens are elevated with false fronts. Players need to hit high approach shots to get close to the pins.
The bottom line is this is a difficult course even from the forward tees. There are  200 members at GCDM.

Guests and members by the same shots the pros must make. OK, not from the back tees.

However, approach shots will involve similar resourceful thinking and creativity of the professionals.

The Mountain Course

The Mountain course climbs up the Santa Catalina foothills. The highest point on the golf course is signature third hole.

The Mountain course has lots of elevation changes and is definitely not a walking course. And the views of Tucson and surrounding mountains are outstanding.

Approach shot need to be precise. But getting on the green is when the battle begins. The greens are fast, but true. But because the course is on the side of a mountain, the greens are very hard to read. The mountain is a major factor in getting the ball into the hole. ‘

The Canyon Course

But the Canyon course takes a different route. The front nine winds down through the Esperrero Canyon.

Fun course, but hilly. Many elevated tee boxes with awesome views, some with awesome hills to climb to get to the tee box! The mountain has a huge effect on putts! The starter will warn you and it doesn’t take long to become a believer!

A Bit Of History

Skyline Country Club was established in 1961. The facility is in Skyline Country Club Estates. One of the first premier communities in the Foothills of Tucson.

When founded, most Skyline members lived in “Estates”. That is not the case today.

Although Skyline is an equity membership, it is subsidized by the Skyline Country Club Estates Homeowners. It had defaulted on its debt of $3.5 million in early 2013.

In December 2013, homeowners approved the proposal to raise homeowners association annual fees for the next 25 years and to use the revenue to hire Arnold Palmer Golf Management.

In exchange for the higher fees, homeowners who aren’t country club members get access to some of the country club’s perks, like monthly dinners and — after two years — one day a month of free tennis. After three years, residents get one free round of golf each month.

Facilities

The Skyline Country Club also offers members many activities including tennis, swimming, fitness center and a great dining experience.

The fitness center sits on the side of a mountain.  Equipment is place to provide 180 degree views of the Tucson Valley.   Fitness equipment includes treadmills, bikes and elliptical trainers.  Weight training stations and free weights are available.

Gallery Golf Club History

The Gallery Golf Club was developed by the MacMillan family (related to the Cargill Family).

The north course was opened in late 1990’s. John Fought and Tom Lehman designed it.

The south course opened in 2003. John Fought designed it. The south course hosted the first two WGC Accenture Match Play tournaments in 2007 and 2008. The tournament was then moved to the Ritz Carlton Golf Course.

Escalante Golf, Inc. acquired both the Gallery and the Ritz Carlton golf course around 2016.

Members are from places throughout the U.S. Some are full time and some winter residents. The Gallery has an active golf membership for both men and women.

The membership is friendly and hospitable to new comers. It is easy to get involve in the informal member groups. And there are numerous formal events throughout the season.

There is a good mix of single digit and higher handicap members. Bring your game, pick your group.

Many of the golfers walk or use push carts. The north course is a more strenuous walk than the south due to elevation changes.

The Courses

The Gallery Golf Club – North Course sits more into the mountains and provides views in all directions. Elevation changes from tee to green provide challenges in club selection and ability to gauge the wind before striking each shot.

The Gallery Golf Club – South Course is more of a links feel it that it has 8 holes leaving the club house and 10 holes coming back.

Wide fairways are the norm and the greens are large – let’s make that extra large! Accurate approach shots are required. And long and winding putts can leave the player wondering how to navigate to the hole.

The South Course was the host of the 2007 & 2008 World Golf Championships -Accenture Match Play Championship.

Dove Mountain Area

Dove Mountain covers 6,200 acres that includes the luxury subdivisions of The Gallery Golf Club and Canyon Pass.

Tom Wieskopf designed this course and has achieved a very playable, yet demanding, 18 holes of golf.

This is a desert golf course requiring relatively long carries off the tee and a premium on accuracy on every shot.

The Golf Club at Vistoso is a great track.   It has been ranked in ” Golf Magazine’s Top 100″.  The course is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

With 4 sets of tees, the course can play “really tough” to “moderately tough”.  From the Back and Regular Tees forced carries can be visually intimidating.  The 14th hole is a drivable par 4, but be careful, its named “Risky” for a reason.

Review Rancho Vistoso Homes for Sale

Take note of the 166-yard par 3 third hole – on a clear day (there are only 323 of them) you will have an amazing view of the north side of the Santa Catalina Mountains.

As you finish your round, you will see the Vistoso Resort Casitas on the 17th and 18th holes.  The casitas offer a variety of floor plans from 1 to 3 bedroom and are great of winter get aways or second homes.  There is a site rental program of these units.
