El Berraco Restaurant

5 Reasons To Stop At The Innovative El Berraco

El Berraco Restaurant Brings Pacific Rim Mexican To Tucson, AZ

Pacific Rim Sea Food in Tucson, AZ

El BerracoEl Berraco opened in early 2016 and is bringing a whole new spin on Mexican food. Mexican sea food that is. But it is not just Mexican.

El Berraco is creating Mexican sea food fusion with tastes found along the Pacific Rim. Receipts come from the coastal restaurants from Mexico, California and South America.

There is nothing like El Berraco in Tucson or perhaps the United States.

5 Reasons You Should Try El Berraco

1 – The décor

If you are driving on 1st Avenue just north of Grant, you will notice a structure that strikes you as a submarine.

A submarine – in Tucson. No “F…n” way!

The silver metal skin and port holes will catch you off guard. Could it be the Jules Vernes Nautilus from 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea. The movie of course.

As you enter, a dark blue glow of neon lighting surrounds you. No LEDs here. It almost makes you feel as if you are slipping into the depths of a blue lagoon. The interior décor enhances the nautical theme with each scenes on the walls, pictures of submarines and digital fish tank.

For those individuals considering themselves “visual”, get ready for sensory overload.

2 – Location

If convenience is a factor in selecting a restaurant, then El Berraco is close to the top. Its 1 st avenue location is easy to get to from most areas of greater Tucson.

3 – The Menu

What can you say about a menu? How about “OMG” it goes on forever. Selection after selection. TV’s in the restaurant show tantalizing images of the many dishes available. Seafood dishes reflect the cuisine found from Mexico all the way to Peru.

Dishes inspired from Columbia, Mexico and Peru bring fascinating flavors to the sea food. And sea food is more than shrimp and your run of the mill fish. Yes, you will find a lot of shrimp dishes. But how about octopus, sting ray, tuna, oysters, scallops, calamari, crab, swordfish and…. The list goes on!

A host of sea food in tacos, tostadas, quesadella, ceviche and other ingenious presentations.

El Berraco will meet your seafood cravings. Seafood with unique flavors and presentations from the Pacific Rim.  And last, the portions are large to huge. You won’t go home hungry, but you will likely have left overs for tomorrow.

4 – The Bar

On this on lets start with the bad news. It is not a wine bar. There is a selection of wines on the menu, but it is small. El Berraco is for the lovers of beer and margarita.

On tap is a long list of options along with bottled beers from Mexico and South America.

5 – Prices

Someone once said, “you get what you pay for.” And El Beracco is no exception. Yes a bit on the price site, but you can’t find this cuisine any place in Tucson, AZ. And you won’t go away hungry.

Conclusion

There are lots of great restaurants in Tucson, AZ. But if you are looking for seafood with a unique Pacific Rim flare – El Berraco is a THE place to go. Great food, lots of beverages and good prices! What more could you want?

El Berraco is a one of a kind Pacific Rim sea food restaurant. From the unique décor to the unique flavors influencing each dish.

The Cork Restaurant Tucson AZ

The Cork: Where Sophistication and Flavor Meet Perfectly

Name Has Changed But NOT The Great Food and Service

Some Background

The Cork Restaurant Tucson AZJonathan’s Cork, an exquisite restaurant in the heart of Tucson for 29 years is now – The Cork. This storied restaurant provides a dining experience that blends casual sophistication and flavors.

Steaks, seafood and wild game adorn the menu. The deserts provide a bounty of flavors and choices. The Cork has something to offer anyone looking for a diverse culinary experience.

As you stroll through the big wooden doors you go back in time. The casual and vintage vibe at The Cork is like a stroll down memory lane to the year 1994.

The year Chef and owner Jonathan Landeen, and wife Colette, purchased the restaurant. The “Cork N Cleaver” had been in business since 1966 and a well known eatery of the day.

It was the perfect place to share a meal, gather with friends, and create memories that will last a lifetime.

Jonathan’s Cork built on that theme and enhanced it. His kitchen created a delicious array of tempting delights.

In March 2023, Glenn and Sally Murphy purchased the restaurant and renamed it “The Cork”. Enjoy your meal in a cozy and chic atmosphere and let the attentive staff take care of the rest of your needs.

Why The Cork Is A Favorite

Kim and I recently had dinner at The Cork and it is now at the top of our list of favorite Tucson restaurants.

With adobe brick walls and cozy rooms, this vintage vibe is sure to keep you coming back. The food, friendly service, and inviting atmosphere makes it a go to place to dine.

The adobe brick building with a big, wooden door fits in with the history of Tucson. Not to mention old towns of southern Spain.

Immediately on entry, the bar area to the right beckons you to stop and indulge. A seating are across from the bar is perfect for a happy hour gathering.

Continuing past the bar, you see the open kitchen with staff ready to prepare your meal. Then proceed to quite cozy rooms with interesting art adorning the walls.

At The Cork you can enjoy your favorite meals in a relaxed setting and timely unhurried service.

The Menu

Beef is the focal point of the dinner menu. filet, prime rib and hardy cuts. But wild-caught fish and wild game birds and meat are also available.

This in not a “steak house” restaurant. The menu offers a diverse array of solid main courses with some “now that sounds good” items. Oh, and save room for desert.

The Cork is a place where there is something for everyone to enjoy. Along with southwestern flavor accents & options to tailor your meal to your liking.

Happy Hour

The Cork offers one of the best happy hours in Tucson. So good that it often hard to get a seat!

Fini's Landing northeast TucsonFini’s Landing is a beach comber themed restaurant in Tucson’s northeast area. For those without WAZE, it is west of North Swan Road and north of East Sunrise Drive….MAP.

Its theme emanates from the experiences for the owners Scott and FIni. Tucson natives who experienced the oceans of the Caribbean, Florida Keys and California. Through in Mexico as well.

Fini’s has a big local clientele, but don’t let that keep you away. If you are in the northeast area Fini’s deserves a stop.

This is also a great place for sports fans with 11 big TV’s in the right places to let everyone see the games.

If you have been to the southeast low country or the Caribbean you know the vibe. But what is interesting is that even if you haven’t, Fini’s feels like a home away from home as you walk through the door.

Teaspoon In Casas Adobe Plaza – Tucson Restaurants Review

Redefining Breakfast And Brunch For Tucson Restaurants

teaspoon tucson restaurant casas adobes plazaAs one of the newest Tucson restaurants, Teaspoon open in Casas Adobe Plaza. Teaspoon and BIRD filled the void left when Blue Fin and Frogs Organic Bakery closed over a year ago.

BIRD Modern Provisions & Bar opened in July 2017, in the space vacated by Frogs. Teaspoon opened in April, 2017 in the Blue Fin space.

Teaspoon Tucson is a great addition to the Casas Adobes Plaza! The patio, decor, and general feel of this spot is exquisite. Low-hanging lights and soft music create a warm and intimate coffee shop feel.

For those who remember Blue Fin, the brick walls remain a strong feature. Dark wood tables and booths covered with tweed and leather complete the dining area. Unfortunately, the dramatic curved staircase to the second floor is gone.

The distinctive covered patio now has an outdoor high top bar. The large fountains nearby create a tranquil seating area.

Teaspoon is the first Tucson restaurant by NYC restaurateurs Treasa Cheung-Valencia and Mary Grzegorski. Sisters and chefs.

Teaspoon restaurant menu does not take a “something for everyone” approach. Although there are many of the expected breakfast items.

Eggs Benedict is available with ham, steak, crab, or portobello mushroom. Skillet dishes create omelets Lobster & Crab with leek and jack cheese.

Hours Of Operation

Teaspoon restaurant serves breakfast and brunch seven days a week.

They are also open Friday evenings with live music and a “small” bites” menu. Of course, cocktails, wines and other beverages of choice are available.

Smashburger Tucson AZ

What Makes A Smashburger So Good – A Tucson Restaurants Review

3 Locations in Tucson AZ – Find One Near You

smashburger tucson azWhat the heck is a smashburger?

The name smashburger actually refers to the cooking technique used in making a hamburger. As with many “new and improved” things, the technique is not new.

The “smashing” technique dates back to the White Castle burger restaurants of the 1920s. White Castle abandoned the smashing method in favor of using frozen beef for its burgers. Clearly, smashing a frozen beef patty can be difficult, if not impossible.

The name Smashburger comes from the process of cooking the burger. A 100 percent fresh angus beef ball is literally smashed immediately after it is put on the hot griddle. A unique smashing tool – patent pending – does the job.

The smashing process creates the sear that seals the juices in the meat. Keeping the juices in makes the burger taste better.

The Maillard Reaction – The TMI Part

The smashing process causes the Maillard Reaction. Also known as the browning reaction. It is actually is a chemical reaction that take place when protein-rich foods get heated. Large proteins break down into smaller compounds that react and recombine into new configurations.

This cycle of breaking down and recombining goes on and on. It is a cascade of chemical reactions that creates hundreds of brand new compounds. A deep brown crust is created before the interior of the beef patty overcooks. Firm on the outside, juicy on the inside.

The Result

The resulting crust on the patty does two things. First, it keeps the juices in. Second, it adds a crunch taste to each bite. But, the process also means a “medium rare to rare” burger is almost impossible to achieve.

The Smashburger menu has a variety of burger choices. For those not into beef, there are Smashchicken sandwiches and fresh salads offerings.

For those wanting to try smashing at home, be advised, there is one place the smashing technique doesn’t work well. On your outdoor grill! Unless you have a side griddle cooking top.

Smashburger Tucson, AZ

The first Smashburger opened in Tucson in November 2012. Today there are four locations.

3837 E Broadway Blvd.
Tucson, AZ

4821 E Grant Rd.
Tucson AZ

Oracle Crossings Shopping Center
7625 N. Oracle Road #145
Oro Valley, AZ

Smashburger is seeing rapid growth across the United States. It combines a modern fast casual dining experience with cooking techniques from a by gone era.

While not yet as big as Five Guys Burger and Fries, it appears to be offering a unique formula for great burgers and gaining popularity.

If you are living in Tucson, AZ or just visiting, give Smashburger a try.

In creating the Wild Garlic Grill, the main building became a kitchen, bar and “inside” dining area. What was the “drive-in” area is now an protected dining area. Nothing fancy, but a unforgettable experience. The wine list is relative short, but the offerings complement the food very well.

The inside bar is situated to allow patrons to enjoy a “beverage of choice” and watch the activity in the kitchen. The hustle and bustle of the staff, the clanking of cook ware and the interaction of the team that makes the Wild Garlic Grill outstanding.

The Experience

We recently had diner there with clients from California. Not only did the printed menu have great offerings the specials were “Special”. Our table settled on a rack of lamb that was exceptional and a stuffed Scottish salmon that raised the bar on presentation and tastes.

Another unique aspect of the Wild Garlic Grill is its neighborhood feel. There is nothing intimating about it, with the exception of finding the entrance. Find the hand written note of the door and come on in. Let the fun begin, beverages flow and the enjoyment begin.

Prep & Pastry Tucson AZ

Prep & Pastry – Its More Than A Place For Breakfast

Another Gem In The Tucson Restaurant Scene

Prep & Pastry Tucson AZBefore Commoner & Co there was Prep & Pastry. It opened in 2014 with one location in Tucson, AZ on N. Campbell Ave.  It remains the go to place for a great breakfast and brunch.

With strong ratings and long waits for a table, a second location opened on Grant Road in 2016.

Many believe Prep & Pastry serves the best breakfast in Tucson. And building on that success, the owners opened Commoner & Co. in 2016. This venue brings happy hour and dinner to the east side.

But wait. Prep & Pastry is more than breakfast. Its breakfast, brunch and lunch. And to make it more unique, they serve booze.

Breakfast And Booze

This may not be the place to stop in at on the way to work. While a mimosa with breakfast on the weekend may be perfect, it may not go well with the boss.

The owners believe food should be beautiful. Be prepared to spend some time working through the menu. So many options, so little time.

All the meals are from scratch. If you are watching your calorie intake – forget it! The pastries are – OMG – out of this world!

If there is a downside to going to Prep & Pastry, its the wait. Sometimes over an hour. But a mimosa or two will make the time pass.

Unfortunately, along with the line at the restaurant is parking. Finding a parking spot can be a challenge. And that taste mimosa at breakfast or brunch may not be helpful for the drive home.

The reviews for Prep & Pastry are 4.5/5.0. But the reviews also prove – You can please some of the people some of the time. And most of the people most of the time. But you can’t please all of the people all for the time.

Give Prep & Pastry a try. Find out if it meets your expectations.
