Arizona Wineries

Visiting Arizona Wineries Is a Great Tucson Day Trip

Over 12 Wineries Within 60 Miles of Tucson AZ

Arizona WineriesArizona wineries have been expanding throughout the State since the late 1970’s. Grapes are supplied to the wineries from three regions in Arizona.

The largest is in Southeast Arizona. The area of Sonoita in Santa Cruz County near Patagonia and Willcox in Cochise County is the largest.

To the northeast near Prescott Arizona, is the Verde Valley in Yavapai County.

Brief History Of Arizona Wineries

Yes, wineries seem out of place in Arizona. But vineyards were actually planted in Arizona as early as the 17th Century.

During that period, Franciscan missionary monks grew grapes to make sacramental wine. None of those early Arizona vineyards exist today.

Arizona wineries were born out of the work of Dr. Gordon Dutt.

Dr. Dutt is the father of wine making in Arizona. Dr. Dutt was a professor of hydrology at the University of Arizona.

He recognized the soil in Sonoita was similar to the wine producing area in Burgundy, France.

The ah ha moment came in the mid 1970’s. Dutt won a federal grant to stimulate the economies of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and Colorado.
That project expanded his knowledge of wine growing.

Shortly after completing the project, Dutt planted and grew his first crop of wine making grapes.

With that success Dutt founded a vineyard in 1979. The Sonoita Vineyards. It was the first of over a dozen vineyards in the Sonoita/Elgen area of southeastern Arizona.

Arizona Wines

The area around Sonoita/Elgen has elevations between 3,800 to 6,000 feet. The hot days and cool nights create perfect growing conditions.

Today, Arizona wineries offer a wide range of unique wines.

Let’s not kid ourselves, Arizona wines are not yet established on the national scene. A few vintages have found their way to recognized restaurants. But few.

From Dr. Dutt’s small Sonoita Vineyard started in 1979, an industry was born. Over 40 wineries now call Arizona their home.

Arizona’s wineries create distinctive whites, reds, and blush wines. The flavor of Arizona wine is complex and difficult to define.

But white blends are most notable. The whites and a few Syrah and Rhone-style blends are making their way into some markets.

Directions To Southeast Arizona Wineries

Southern Arizona Wineries are located about 55 miles from Tucson in Sonoita and Elgin Arizona. Take I – 10 East from Tucson to Highway 83 just southeast of Vail AZ. Go south to Highway 82.

You are now on the west side of the Arizona wineries region. Highways 83 and 82 along with the Upper Elgin Road create a loop around the Arizona wineries area. MAP

Wines Unique To Arizona

While it is unlikely one will find a classic Merlot or Cabernet Savignon, the southern Arizona wineries are a great day trip from Tucson. Take a some time to stop at these Arizona vineyards and sample the wine.

The style of these Arizona wineries varies from simple to more elaborate structures. Talk with the wine makers and learn about their approach to the Arizona wines they serve. If you like the sample, take a some home for a remembrance of your Tucson day trip.

Depending on the time of year you visit the southern Arizona wineries, you may need a sweater or jacket to protect you from the winds of the open plains.

There aren’t many places to stop for food so a picnic lunch is a good addition to your gear. Bring water to stay hydrated and a cooler for any wine purchases is a good idea in warm weather.

Best Tacos In Tucson AZ

Finding The Best Tacos in Tucson AZ

Top 10 Mexican Restaurants for The Best Tacos in Tucson Arizona

Where Are the Best Tacos in Tucson AZ?

best tacos in tucson azRecently, one of our clients from the Midwest asked the question, “where can I get one of the best tacos in Tucson?”. Simple question, right?

We have lived in Tucson AZ since 2002 and we truly enjoy the abundance of restaurants. Many of them Mexican restaurants. But we had never thought of seeking out where to find the best tacos in Tucson AZ.

To answer our client’s question, we began a quest to find that best taco in Tucson AZ before they arrived for their house hunting trip.

What Are The Best Tacos In Tucson Made Of?

We started our quest by understanding what makes a great taco. A taco is a simple food item with three basic components.

  1. Tortilla. Tortillas come in two types – corn and flour. Corn is considered the more authentic choice. However, the flour tortilla is softer and tends not to break apart when biting into it. But wait, there are soft corn tortilla shells as well. For the completely uninitiated, a tortilla forms the bottom and sides of the taco.
  2.  Filling. A taco can be filled with almost anything that you can dream up. In Tucson AZ, taco fillings will traditionally be beef, pork, chicken, fish or shrimp.  These items may be shredded, sliced or chopped. The fillings will be marinated in a range of sauces to create flavor, a unique taste or mind-blowing spice experience.
  3.  Toppings. Salsa are a main stay for topping a taco. However, toppings have a life all their own. The standard topping options include, but are certainly not limited to: Salsa, chopped onions, cilantro, guacamole, sour cream, chopped cabbage (for fish and shrimp tacos only), and lime.

Easy….But They Are Not All Alike

One more thing, lets understand that you won’t find tacos on the healthy foods list. Great tacos are bad for you, but that’s why they are so really good.

Our search for the best tacos in Tucson considered local Mexican restaurants including the well-known El Charro restaurant as well as many small local shops throughout Tucson AZ.

Did we try them all – NO Way! It would have been the sequel to “super-size me”. It is also important to recognize, that like art, the best tacos in Tucson are in the eye of the beholder. Or should I say “taster” in this case.

The List Begins

Our list of the Top 10 local Mexican restaurants serving the Best Tacos in Tucson begins with the Food Networks top pick in Arizona for Americas tastiest tacos.

  1. El Guero Canelo – known for its Sonoran Hot Dog, but the tacos are terrific. Three locations in Tucson.
  2. Poco & Mom’s – Two locations – 1060 S Kolb Rd Tucson, AZ And 7000 E Tanque Verde Established in 2000, it is not well known, but serves good food with friendly service.
  3. Taqueria Pico de Gallo – 2618 S 6th Ave Tucson, AZ – a no-frills stucco taco shop that serves great Mexican street food in Tucson, Arizona
  4. St Marys Mexican Food – 1030 W Saint Marys Rd Tucson AZ – This place is mostly a take-out place. There are tables, but they fill up fast.
  5. La Botana Taco Grill and Cantina – 3200 N 1st Ave Tucson, AZ At corner of Fort Lowell – A Tucson local Mexican restaurant with vegetarian selections.
  6. Taqueria Juanitos – 708 W Grant Rd Tucson AZ just west of Oracle Rd – The purple store front makes this place easy to find. Just good food, good prices and good service.
  7. Casa Sanchez – Mom’s Mexican – 8320 N Thornydale Rd Tucson AZ just south of W Cortaro Farms Rd – Great Salsa for all the best tacos in Tucson.
  8. El Sur – 5602 E 22nd St Tucson, AZ – El Sur serves great food with authentic Mexican flavors at a quaint location and reasonable prices.
  9. Nicos Taco Shop – Nicos Tucson has 9 locations – No frills just quick and affordable good Mexican food. The breakfast burrito will keep you going all day.
  10. El Taco Tote – 1340 N Wilmot Rd Tucson AZ – Clean, friendly staff with fresh and delicious food.

Conclusion

There you have it. Our list of places to buy and savior one of the best tacos in Tucson. We hope you find one that will be on your Tucson Mexican restaurant favorites list.

Grand Canyon National Park Map – Arizona

Grand Canyon Arizona

Easy Look at The National Park Map & Surrounding Area

Grand Canyon ArizonaGrand Canyon National Park is truly one of the Wonders of the World. As one of nature’s masterpiece, it should be seen by everyone. It is located near Flagstaff in Northwest Arizona and Southeast Nevada.

Standing at the rim of the immense canyon provides amazing views. And makes one wonder how this could ever have been created.

Grand Canyon National Park is about a 6 hour’s drive from Tucson. It is a great weekend trip for the family.

Points Of Interest at The Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon Map Arizona

The Grand Canyon is considered one of the natural wonders of the world. The exposed geologic strata rise over a mile above the river.  The Grand Canyon is one of the most complete records of geological history that can be seen anywhere in the world.

Geologic formations such as gneiss and schist found at the bottom of the Canyon. They date back 1,800 million years.  This geologic incline creates a diversity of biotic communities. Five of the seven life zones are present in the park.

The entire park area is considered to be semi-arid desert.   Distinct habitats are located at different elevations along the 8,000-foot elevation gradient. Near the Colorado River, riparian vegetation and sandy beaches prevail.  Just above the river corridor a desert scrub community exists with a wide variety of cacti and warm desert scrub species.

A pinyon pine and juniper forest grow above the desert scrub.  They can be found up to 6,200 feet.   Between 6,200 feet and 8,200 feet ponderosa pines are abundant. On the North Rim, above 8,200 feet, a spruce-fir forest tops out the park.

The dry climate has been instrumental in preserving many prehistoric fossils deep within caves in Grand Canyon’s geologic formations.

If you are spending a few days in Northern Arizona, be sure to visit the other great things to see and do.

A Turn of the 20th Century Copper Mining Town

History Of Bisbee AZ

BiBisbee AZsbee AZ is located about 90 miles southeast of Tucson, AZ – MAP Bisbee sits in the Mule Mountains and is the county seat of Cochise County.

Founded in 1880, and named for Judge DeWitt Bisbee, a financial backer of the Copper Queen Mine.

At the turn of the 20th century, Bisbee AZ was a vibrant copper mining town of the Southwest frontier. Today, it is home to many retirees and artists.

The town of Bisbee has preserved many buildings and homes of its historic past. Hillside streets reminds one of European cities and their upper and lesser towns.

Find Homes For Sale In Bisbee, AZ

In the early 1900’s, Bisbee AZ was the largest city in the United States between St. Louis and San Francisco. At that time, Bisbee had a population of over 20,000.

During the early 1900’s, that Bisbee had the was a cultural center in the great Southwest.

In 1929, the county seat of Cochise County moved from Tombstone to Bisbee AZ. It still remains in Bisbee AZ, today.

Bisbee AZ provided residents a variety of recreational pursuits. The town had a community library, an opera house, the ball fields and golf course. Bisbee’s ball field and golf course were the first in Arizona.

The City was “the Queen of the Copper Camps”. The area became one of the richest mineral sites in the world. It produced almost 3 million ounces of gold.

Along with 4 million tons of copper, silver, lead and zinc.

A Brawling Culture

The cultural status and riches of Bisbee AZ, could not hide the rowdy mining camp that it was. One area of Bisbee AZ identified as Brewery Gulch, boasted 47 saloons. Needless to say, the saloons provided booze, gambling and “shady ladies”. The area was know as the “liveliest spot between El Paso and San Francisco”.

In 1908, a fire raged through Bisbee’s commercial district. The massive fire along Main Street left nothing but ashes. Residents immediately began reconstruction and most of the district was rebuilt by 1910. The rebuilt area on Main Street remains intact today.

When mining operations in Bisbee AZ became unprofitable in the mid 1970’s, mines closed. Employees and Bisbee Arizona residents left to find jobs and new lives. The departure of one group of residents created opportunities for others. Artists and free spirited individuals found Bisbee an ideal place to live.

To tell the story of its past, Bisbee AZ has established a large museum. One of exhibits presents how the residents created a town and made a living out of the rock of the Mule Mountains. The exhibit is “Bisbee: Urban Outpost on the Frontier”.

Copper Queen Hotel

Another historic structure in Bisbee AZ is the Copper Queen Hotel. It opened in 1902. The Copper Queen has been a place for travelers, business tycoons, crooks, gamblers, celebrities and tourists for over a 100 years.

The Copper Queen Hotel has great charm and hospitality. Some believe is its haunted.

People have reported ghosts of an elderly gentleman, a young boy and one of the town’s ladies of the night.

Guests seeing a ghost can add their experience in the ghost register. The ghost register is at the front desk and contains many entries.

The hotel became a movie star in the 1950’s and filmed at the Copper Queen Hotel.

Actors included Victor Mature, Richard Egan, Lee Marvin and Ernest Borgnine. As a side note, Lee Marvin had a home in Tucson AZ until his death in 1987.

The hotel continues as a prominent point of interest and over night stay for visitors to Bisbee AZ.

Conclusion

Bisbee AZ is an opportunity to travel back in time. A time when hard working people created a rich history in the Southwest.

Visit the restored neighborhoods of Victorian and European-style homes sitting on the hillsides.

The Queen Mine Tour train is a great way to see the underground mine and work conditions.

Unwind and let your imagination take you back to the turn of the 20th century. Relive the splendor and challenges of living in a frontier town in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Bisbee Arizona is a great day trip from Tucson AZ. If you have time, consider the chance to relive a bit of history by staying overnight at the Copper Queen Hotel.

From red-tinted slot canyons to rolling hills dense with pine trees, Arizona offers one of the most diverse natural landscapes in America. 300-plus days of sunshine and miles of winding asphalt roads make Arizona a haven for motorcyclists.

Motorcycle Rides in ArizonaCoronado Trail

One of the most diverse scenic routes, the Coronado Trail is Arizona’s “long and winding road”. On the map, look for the towns of Eager and Clifton along the border of Arizona and New Mexico. Arizona road 191 connects these towns.

You will begin near Clifton in a desert landscape, and enjoy gorgeous forests, tranquil meadows, rust-tinted mountains and dramatic views.

Along the way is an abundance of wildlife and a stunning view of the world’s largest open-pit copper mines.

Cascabel Road to Redington

This picturesque drive begins in Benson on North Pomerene Road, which leads onto North Cascabel Road. You’ll pass through lush mountainous scenery, stunning waterfalls and striking rock formations.

Before the junction on San Pedro River Rd, ride through an impressive forest of soya cacti. When you reach the oasis-like Tuscan Valley, you will see ranches, rolling creeks and stunning wildlife such as fallow deer.

Sunset Point

See dense forests, majestic mountains and an extraordinary extinct volcano. On HWY 89 in Flagstaff, head west on Loop Road.

In another four miles you will reach the park gate. View stunning red rock scenery and roll along roads dappled with hardened molten rock. There are a few twists and turns, but the surface quality makes for an easy ride.

Beware that because it’s a National Park there are no gas stations, so be sure to fill up before entering.

Cottonwood Canyon Run

Starting just north of Wickenburg, the ride begins in a desert setting and climbs the side of a mountain to verdant pine forests. This remarkably beautiful route showcases some of the best views Arizona has to offer.

Gorgeous red rock formations and vibrant greenery will reward you during your trip through this ancient canyon born from glacier and stream erosion.

You’ll pass through the historic copper mining town Jerome which hosts spectacular views, so be sure to bring a camera.

Fountain Hills, Bartlett Lake

This 145-mile stretch boasts an eclectic mix of natural beauty, Western culture and picturesque suburbs. As you begin the climb to Fountain Hills, enjoy spectacular aerial views of the East Valley.

The location is proudly home to one of the world’s tallest fountains. As you ascend the road from the marina, take a right to visit several beaches. These golden shores will offer panoramic views of the lake.

Bagdad to Iron Springs

The route from Bagdad to Iron Springs should be on any scenic rock lover’s list. The canyon offers a copper mining area sprawling with metamorphic and igneous rock formations.

This tranquil ride boasts acres of untouched desert and varied vegetation.

As you travel up the stream toward Iron Springs, you will find beautiful broadleaf trees such as cottonwood. Here you will also find a café, garage and a small museum.

Wickenburg Road

Those who want to pack the best scenery Wickenburg Road has to offer in a short space of time should look no further.

The 40-mile-long trip through desert settings is teeming with gorgeous greenery such as creosote and acacia. Cacti, gullies and low hills dominate the later half of the road before a gentle shift into suburbia.

It’s worth stopping in the historic town of Wickenburg itself where you will find a large western museum.

Payson, Mogollon Rim

This 256-mile loop takes you through rich forest roads for the first 43 miles. Dense greenery gives way to breathtaking views from the brim of the Colorado Plateau.

The Mogollon Rum drops up to 2000 feet in some areas, and offers some of the most extensive views of Arizona.

You’ll see acres of tall pines which are part of the largest ponderosa pine forest in the state. To avoid riding in snow, plan your trip between May and early October.

The Motorcycle Safety Lawyers add that if you have to ride in harsh conditions, make sure to “Slow it down, wear appropriate clothing and a helmet, and plan your route carefully.”

Arizona Rides

Tortilla Flat, Apache Trail

This curvy trail is home to the stunning Fish Creek Canyon. Those brave enough to drive on the hanging roads alongside the canyon will be rewarded with stunning views of deep blue lakes, twisted mountains and rich forests of saguaro.

At the foot of the Superstition Mountain, it’s worth visiting the Goldfield Mining Town, an abandoned settlement that has since been recreated for tourists. A visit to Tortilla Flat itself will feel like a step back in time.

Here you’ll find a saloon, a restaurant, and a country store known for its prickly pear gelato.

Lake Pleasant, Castle Hot Springs

You’ll need a little perseverance with this route, but it’s worth it. As soon as you turn off the Interstate at exit 103, you’ll be greeted by a gently winding road. From here, you can enjoy some of the most beautiful rural scenery Arizona has to offer.

As the curves tighten, the road will gradually climb on the Vulture Mountains and ascend to the Vulture Mine ghost town. Rub your hand against the ore in the mine and you may find your palm is glowing gold.

But Wait! We have 3 more.

Southern Arizona also great motorcycle ride. Just not as many. If you live in the greater Tucson area, check these “roadies” out!

We already showed you our favorite rides in the northern part of our state, and honestly, the next three rides give them a run for their money!

Here are the best motorcycle rides in Arizona leaving from Tucson.

Tucson  to Tombstone, Bisbee, Coronado National Monument

Alright, this isn’t a day trip. Plan an over night in Bisbee or find a camp ground and pop your tent. Bisbee has adequate hotel space and the Copper Queen Hotel has the reputation as haunted. Might meet a long ago relative?

The Gym Club Suites is also a good option.

Lets Get Started with our first best motorcycle rides in Arizona……Southern AZ

motorcycle ridesFrom Tucson head to Tombstone for your first stop. Its a touristy place, but fun to see where Wyatt Earp became famious.

Tombstone is a good place to grab lunch. There are 8 to 10 places to eat.

After Tombstone, head to Bisbee. the scenery on the route is good.

Bisbee was once the State Capital of Arizona. In the early 1900’s its population was over 20,000 and the largest city between St. Louis and San Francisco.

Have dinner in one of Bisbee’s good restaurants and tuck in for the night.

In the morning head west on 92 towards Palominos. Look for signs for Coronado National Monument.

Follow those and the road turns to dirt. The Mexican border is near by.

Alon the way you will climb a steep to the top of a bluff . Its a good place to take a break.

Park in the overlook parking lot and you can see deep into Mexico. You will see the border wall snaking through the desert.

Montezuma Canyon Road ranks among the best dirt roads in Southern Arizona. Enjoy it.

Tucson to Mt. Lemmon

southern arizona mt lemmonThe trip is a mere 30 miles from the start of the Catalina Highway to the top of Mt. Lemmon. On the way you will encounter huge, sweeping curves and breathtaking scenic vistas.

You will go climb from Tucson at 2400 ft. to over 9000 ft at the summit. Temperatures will drop about 25 to 30 degrees along the way. So layers are a good thing to plan for.

The views stunning, but keep your eyes on the road as you took in the expanding valley below you. There are turn offs along the way to take in the view across the San Pedro River Valley to the east is awesome.

As you neared the top, the quaint little mountain town of Summerhaven greets you. The town has is a restaurant, and a ski slope and lift. A new boutique hotel offers individual cabins. It is in demand the year around, so make a reservation if you plan a stay over.

On the way down don’t forget to let you brakes cool. The ride may be even more thrilling on your decent back to Tucson.

Tucson to The White Mountains

The White Mountains along the Arizona – New Mexico border are the second highest range in the state. Travel time from Tuson is about 4 hours and offers riders smooth turns and forest lined roads. This trip is a definite over-nighter.

The range has mountain lakes and streams. Camping and fishing is plentiful in this high mountain area.

Several stocked lakes are available for fishing. And snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing at Sunrise Ski Area.

The towns of Pinetop-Lakeside and Springerville-Eagar provide the most popular access points. They have plenty of hotels and restaurants.

Take Hwy 89 north to Oracle Junction. From Oracle Junction take Hwy 77 north to Globe. From Globe take Hwy 60 through Salt River Canyon into Show Low. Turn right onto Hwy 260 / White Mountain Blvd. for about 15 miles.

A Bit Of History

Canyon Ranch was founded by Mel and Enid Zuckerman and Jerry Cohen in 1979 in Tucson, Arizona.

Mel Zuckerman told the background of the name in an interview with the Arizona Daily Star on June 24, 2014.

Zuckerman left New Jersey with his family in 1958, and traveled west to find a new home. After 5 weeks of travel Zuckerman ended up in Tucson, Arizona.

One of the first places he visited was Sabino Canyon.

He decided he wanted to live near the natural beauty in the area. They bought a home and settled down.

In 1978, he and his wife Enid decided to open a health resort. To do that, they purchased the 42-acre Double U Dude Ranch, near Sabino Canyon.

The old ranch buildings were in bad shape. But rather than tearing them down, they decided to rebuild them. They felt rebuilding would not damage the energy of the place and scare away the wildlife.

Mel and Enid named the new resort Canyon Ranch. The name derived from Sabino Canyon and the Double U Dude Ranch.
