Tucson Mountains Tucson AZ

The Tucson Mountains – Majestic And Magical

One Of  The 5 Mountain Ranges Surrounding The City

tucson mountains sombrero peakThe Tucson Mountains are due west of Tucson, Arizona. The Tucson Mountains are a range small in scale and short in stature.

But they are big in beauty and bold in ruggedness. They are the lowest of the four mountain ranges surrounding the City of Tucson.

The others are the Santa Catalina Mountains, Rincon Mountains, Santa Rita Mountains and the Tortolitas.

A major segment of the Tucson Mountains are in the Saguaro National Park West.

The area has been the backdrop of countless Old West movies and television shows. Old Tucson studios was a prominent location for film making for over 40 years. .

Rocky and scrappy desert peaks that represent the character of the area. Do people climb these majestic slopes. Well, yes!

But it is not an easy climb. Hikers must brave desert bushwhacks and rock scrambles to reach the summit.

If you make it, the views are spectacular. Combining interesting urban Tucson and the wild desert mountain landscape.

What makes a trip to the Tucson Mountains a special treat is the Sonoran Desert landscape. The diversity in plant life and desert understated gem of the Arizona landscape.

A great place to see the west area wildlife up close is the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. It provides exhibits of the area’s plants and wildlife in a natural setting.

Beauty And Protection

Together, these 5 ranges create a beautiful setting from almost any location in the greater Tucson area. And they protect Tucson from the Haboobs experienced in Phoenix.

The Tucson Mountains are not high compared to the Santa Catalina Mountains. They rise to only 4,687 feet.

This mountains range is the remains of a more than 15-mile-long collapsed volcano. For the Geologists, that is a volcanic caldera.

The eruption occurred some 70 million years ago. And the force was greater then the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980.

The rock layers in the mountains reveal a pre-historic landscape. It included a large oyster-rich freshwater lake near what today is Wasson Peak.

Dinosaurs roamed around the lake. And camels trod the mudflats. While mastodons fed on the grass around the lake.

Southern Arizona Mountain Ranges

The volcanic cycle that created the Tucson Mountains created other mountain ranges in southern Arizona. In Tucson, the Silver Bell Mountains, Sierrita Mountains and Santa Rita Mountains.

The Chiricahua Mountains in southeast Arizona to shape. And the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, AZ. Along with other notable Arizona ranges.

A notable spot in the area is the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. This world renown museum is on the west side of the Tucson Mountains. Two other parks in the Tucson Mountains are the Saguaro National and Tucson Mountain County Parks.

Step Back In Time

A great place to visit is Old Tucson Studios. Once an important location for western movies. John Wayne is among the many stars to have made movies there.

Old Tucson Studios are open the year around. This “step back” in time also provides visitors many one time experiences. Stunt shows, gunfights, and musical reviews. Movies are still filmed there.

The Park

The Tucson Mountain Park, established in 1929, is over 20,000 acres. It is one of the largest natural areas owned and managed by a local government.

The park has about 62 miles of shared-use trails. The area is popular with hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. But motorized vehicles are NOT permitted.

The Tucson Mountains offer a range of Tucson hiking trails from flat and easy to very rugged.

Saguaro National Park, founded in 1933, was later designated a national park in 1994.

The Tucson Mountain District of Saguaro National Park rises from 2,180 ft to 4,687 ft. It contains 2 biotic communities. One desert scrub and the other desert grassland.

The average rainfall is just over 10 in per year. Common wildlife includes quail, coyote and desert tortoise.

Trails To Explore

Tumamoc Hill

This easy hike (3.1-mile round trip) up a well-paved hill offers fantastic views of the city. It is also a perfect spot for watching the sunrise and sunset.

Valley View Overlook Trail

An easy family hike (.8-mile round trip) within Saguaro National Park West. Not long and once you reach the ridge there are great views within a 35-mile radius.

Yetman Trail

This moderate (12-mile round trip) hike is in Tucson Mountain Park. The name Yetman Trail spotlights David Yetman. Yetman, an environmentalist, hosts KUAT’s public television series “The Desert Speaks.”

Starr Pass Trail

The Richard Genser Starr Pass Trailhead begins near Starr Pass Resort. It is the primary trailhead access to Tucson Mountain Park. The Rock Wren Trail connects the trailhead to the Tucson Mountain Park Trail System.

King Canyon Trail

A moderate (6.5-mile round trip) trek to the summit of Wasson Peak in the Tucson Mountains. Along the way hikers see a vast selection of desert cacti. Among them are the giant saguaro, prickly pear and barrel cactus. Other desert flora include cholla cactus, ocotillo, along with mesquite, and paloverde trees.

One More Thing – Permits

If you are new to hiking these trails you may want to get a map or hiking guide. Most hiking/camping storres with have them.

Another option is to contact local hiking groups. Summit Hut and Southern Arizona Hiking Club are good places to start.

Conclusion

The Tucson Mountains are a majestic backdrop on the west side of Tucson, AZ. Homeowners living in the foothills of the Tucson Mountains have stunning views of the City and eastern ranges.

Saguaro National Park

What You Need To Know About The Saguaro National Park

Saguaro National Park Has Actually Two Park Locations In Tucson, AZ – East And West

The Place To See Saguaro Cactus

saguaro national parkSaguaro National Park is home to almost all Saguaro Cacti in the Unites States. The Saguaro Cactus is a giant among cacti. It grows in a small area of the United States in the Sonoran Desert in Tucson AZ.

The stately saguaro cactus has long been the recognized image of the great southwest. It appears in photographs silhouetted in a desert landscape against a sunset. The word saguaro, pronounced, “sah-wah’-ro,” came from a Spanish mispronunciation of an ancient Papago word referring only to this species of plant.

As cactus go, the Saguaro is the largest. It will grow to be 50 feet tall. But it grows at a snail’s pace. Only a few inches each year. Yes, that means a 40 or 50 foot Saguaro will be centuries old.

It will take 65 years for the arm of a Saguaro to appear. And a mature Saguaro will weigh in at 8 tons.

The first Saguaro blossom will appear when the cactus is 50 to 60 years old (about 7 to 8 feet tall). Clusters of creamy white flowers bloom near the ends of top and on the arms in May and June.

The blossom will be there for only one night. These short-lived flowers will be completely open by midnight. But by midday, the 24-hour flower closes forever.

The white waxy Saguaro blossom became the Arizona State flower in 1931.

Saguaro National Park

Saguaro National Park includes two distinct areas. The Tucson Mountain District on the west side of Tucson. And the Rincon Mountain District on the east side. Both are part of the United States National Park System.

President Hoover signed a proclamation establishing Saguaro National Monument in 1933. It was an obscure act for the time that provided a wonderful benefit to Tucson residents and visitors.

The act helped to protect and preserve the Saguaro Cactus and its habitat.

The two districts of Saguaro National Park cover 91,327 acres. The Eastern Rincon Mountain District is the highest. Rising to over 8,000 feet. And it includes over 128 miles of trails.

The park is near the northernmost limit of the Saguaro’s natural survival zone within the Sonoran Desert.

Saguaro National Park – Tucson Mountain District (West)

The Tucson Mountain District (West) is lower in elevation with a denser saguaro population.

Petroglyphs created by the ancient Hohokam tribes are in the west park. This rock art pre-dates modern written history by thousands of years ago,

Saguaro National Park – Rincon Mountain District (East)

Situated on the eastern boundary of Tucson. This side of the park is less populated with Saguaro then the west district. But the Saguaro are bigger due to higher rainfall and water runoff from the Rincon Mountains. Saguaro National Park East rises to over 8,000 feet with over 120 miles of trails to explore.

Summary

The Saguaro National Park is one of the many places to see in Tucson. It and the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum make it easy to see the natural beauty and wildlife of the desert.

Harming a saguaro cactus in any manner is illegal in Arizona. Construction projects must take special precautions to move every saguaro affected. The giant saguaro cactus is a candidate for the endangered species list.

Casino Del Sol Tucson Golf Course

Casino Del Sol Tucson Sewailo Golf Course

Newest Golf Course in Tucson AZ

Casino Del Sol Tucson GolfCasino Del Sol Tucson opened the Sewailo golf course in 2013.

Sewailo, which means “flower world” in the Pascua Yaqui language.

While the name may be calm and inviting, this course can humble you in a nano second. The course is a blend of dessert landscape and picturesque lakes and streams.

Yes, it is in the desert, but with lakes and streams. Who would have thought that up? Answer….Notah Begay.

Some may remember that he was on the Stanford golf team with….oh, what’s his name? Tiger Woods.

Notah made it to the PGA Tour and won four times. Now is a frequent commentator on The Golf Channel providing insight into what players are facing on the course.

The Course

This unique and challenging course measures 7,400 yards from the championship tees. But fear not. Each hole has five different tee boxes to accommodate players of all abilities.

But your easiest shots will be on the expansive driving range and practice area.

From your first tee shot to the final putt, the course forces you to hit good shots. Fairways are firm and the ball runs and runs and runs. Hidden fairway slopes will take your ball into one of the lakes or a creek.

Large gaping bunkers await the errant shot. Bunkers with steep fronts on a hole that demands a long approach shot. Ba humbug. A bogey or worse awaits.

The course is available to guests of the Resort and the public. Lessons are available to help beginners and more skilled players find their game.

Sewailo is home to the U of A golf team and enhances Tucson’s reputation as a golf destination.

The Casino

Casino Del Sol Tucson Resort is nestled on the quite high desert. Its location is just 15 minutes from the Tucson International Airport and downtown City of Tucson.

See Map to Casino Del Sol Resort and Sewailo golf course.

The Casino Del Sol Tucson hotel has 215 luxurious rooms and suites. The resorts 65,000 square feet of indoor/outdoor function space is ideal for large events and conferences.

And of course the casino is always open.

Buying A Second Home In Tucson AZ

Buying a Second Home in Tucson – Is It a Smart Idea in 2021?

Second Home Or Future Retirement Living

Having A Second Home In Tucson AZBeing able to buy a second home gives people a chance to experience a different lifestyle and get a well-deserved break from their everyday lives.

With a second home, you get to avoid being stuck in one place and, more importantly, you get to buy a home in a place you actually like and not just buy it because it is close to work or your kids’ school.

Now, due to everything that is happening in the world, a lot of people are resorting to leaving big cities and buying a second home in Tucson. But, should you do it, too?

Getting a second home amid a global pandemic is something you need to plan carefully. So, before you make any rash decisions, make sure to read this guide. We will tell you about the Tucson real estate market, the perks of living here, and some things second home buyers need to keep in mind.

Tucson real estate market – Is it still hot in 2021 or not?

Coronavirus has introduced some significant changes to the real estate market. A big part of our lives has moved online. Today, we are working remotely, buying stuff online more than ever, and listening to online classes.

Because of the availability of these services, a growing number of remote workers and families have decided to ditch big and crowded cities and move to the suburbs. Major metropolitan areas have seen a drop in sales, and no one could predict that. But, what about Tucson?

The 2020 Tucson housing market report showed us that Tucson’s market managed to get stronger during COVID-19. In fact, entire Arizona is showing some pretty impressive numbers.

This new switching-urban-for-suburban-areas trend has only increased the Grand Canyon State’s popularity (which is something we can’t say for the Big Apple).

Although it’s hard to predict anything in these challenging times, it seems that the Tucson housing market will remain hot for a while. This means that those interested in buying a second home in Tucson need to be quick and have everything planned in advance.

Why should you consider buying a second home in Tucson, Arizona?

There is a reason why so many people have decided to move to Tucson when corona hit us. Home buyers have recognized its potential and everything the second largest city in Arizona can offer. Here are some of the reasons why you too should consider buying a home in this city.

Affordability

Buying a second home isn’t the cheapest thing to do. There will be a lot of expenses, and you will need to determine whether your wallet can handle it.

However, it will be much easier for you if you choose to buy a second home in an affordable state.

Luckily for you, Arizona is one of them. Tucson has a lower living cost index than the US average, which means it is cheaper than most US cities.

Moving to an affordable city will mean a lot to you, especially if you need to move over long distances. Relocations can be pricey, and you need to find the right help for the process that will enable you to avoid unnecessary and unplanned expenses. A reliable crew can make any relocation easier, no matter the distance.

Welcoming community

A welcoming community is what separates good places to live from others. This should be one of the things to look for when going on a house hunt. Having a friendly neighbor next door makes tons of difference.

They can help you with settling in and make the entire relocation more enjoyable. With their help, you will adjust to Tucson and its surroundings in next to no time.

Outdoor activities

There are tons of things to do in Tucson. Whether you are a kid or a retiree, you will manage to find an activity that goes well with your needs and interests. Although there are many activities to choose from, our vote goes to outdoor ones.

Tucson’s surroundings are perfect for camping, backpacking, and climbing. The entire area is ideal for nature lovers and is full of hidden gems.

In addition to this, Tucson has top-notch air quality, which is why it is voted one of the healthiest cities in the USA.

Things you need to keep in mind before buying a second home in Tucson

So, what do you think about purchasing a second home in Tucson? Will this city be the right fit for you?
Although this is a great city that can offer a lot, there are some things you will need to take into consideration before deciding whether you will be investing in real estate or not.

Here are the most important ones:

> Full financial impact – Don’t forget about additional expenses, such as maintenance and insurance. Write everything on a piece of paper to see if you have the budget for doing everything right.

> Requirements – Before you go on a house hunt, identify your needs. Know what kind of home you need and don’t settle for less.

> Location – Although you are working remotely, you will still want to buy a second home in a safe area. This is a must if you have kids or plan to have them soon.

> Maintenance – Most people forget to maintain their second homes because they don’t spend a lot of time there. As a result, their homes deteriorate very quickly.

Buying a second home in Tucson will be a good investment as long as you play your cards right. So, before you make any decisions, weigh the pros and cons of doing this, calculate your budget, and, if possible, spend a day in Tucson. Don’t forget to consult with a local real estate agent as they can be of great help to you.

Persian Room Fine Dining

Persian Room Restaurant Review

Strip Mall Location – Persian Cuisine Inside

persian roomSo lets set the stage.

You have finished your round of golf at the Crooked Tree Golf Course. That’s at the corner of Thornydale Road and W. Overton Road.

As you turn north, you see a large neon sign in the strip mall to the east – Persian Room Fine Dining!

You say to yourself – Strip Mall and Fine Dining. What’s wrong with this picture? The answer is, could be the location, but not the fine dining.

The strip mall location and the exterior hide a dining experience you won’t forget. Behind the door is a place you would not expect in Tucson.

What’s Inside?

The first thing you see as you enter is a large water fountain. Ok, not that unusual, but the tall glass center piece with a robbed figure is. That along with the massive chandler and red columns and ceiling decor are hints of whats to come.

Enter the dining area a behold the high ceilings, big chandlers and mural ceilings. A big open space that is both elegant and relaxed.

Take a seat at a table or booth and settle in. Open the menu and take in the diverse offerings of true Persian dishes.

The menu is intimidating. Lots of choices, but most unfamiliar to those not familiar with the cuisine.

So, order a drink, and start your expedition through the menu.

So Many Things, So Little Time

Persian cuisine at its finest. Plenty of kabobs – tenderloin, lamb, beef, Mahi, etc. Rice, breads and side dishes also excellent. Stews of various sorts. Seasonings are aromatic and tasty.

The koobideh is the most moist and flavorful I’ve had! Both the lamb and beef were delicious. Get the special rice substitute, loobia polo!! It’s a meal in itself!

Homemade baklava is delicious! Soft pastry and a balance of cinnamon/nuts/honey. If that is not enough, the Persian ice cream is an excellent blend of pistachio and rose water.

Oh, One observation. The meals need a warning sign — HUGE!! There is lots – lots – lots of food. That means –  leftovers!!

The service is good and the ambience very pleasant. All in all, an excellent restaurant which we will recommend.

If you are look for a fine Persian dining this is the place! Located in Tucson and Scottsdale, Arizona.

Thinking About Selling Your Home In The Greater Tucson Area?

Selling a home requires more than listing it in the Tucson MLS system. It’s about marketing. Marketing through multiple online channels.

To no one’s surprise, 80% of home buyers start their search on the internet. Homes must be visible on multiple internet channels. The more visible a home is, the faster it will sell.

And the photos on the mls make a difference. You can spend lots of money on home staging, but if the photos aren’t great it doesn’t matter. Staging and stunning photos make it all come together.

We use multiple online marketing channels to showcase your home. We will build a stand-alone website built to show your home. Our marketing program targets key cities in the U. S. based on the season.

For luxury listings, our drone service provides video of your home and neighborhood. This video along with professional photos helps the online buyer see and feel your home. Their “new” home.

Kennedy Lake Tucson Fishing

Kennedy Lake Tucson Fishing

Kennedy Lake – Tucson Fishing – Description, Pictures, Map & Suggestions

Arizona Fishing Regulations

Kennedy LakeKennedy Lake is one of Tucson’s Urban Lakes and part of the Municipal Fishing Program.  Located just off Ajo Way between La Cholla and Mission Rd, the lake is located at the J.F. Kennedy Park.

Kennedy Lake is about 10 acres in size. An average depth of 8 feet makes this a very shallow lake.  Open during daylight hours and gas motored boats are prohibited. Small boats and canoes are most popular.  As in all cases, proper floatation devices must be in the boat.

As part of the Urban Lakes program swimming, wading are prohibited as are glass containers.  Leash laws apply.

Although relatively small, this lake is stocked with Catfish, Bass, Bluegill, Sunfish and Rainbow when in season.  So wet that line and start fishing

It should be noted that from the Kennedy Lake Park area you can’t see the lake.  There is a big hill between the park and the lake.  Its a fun thing to do with kids, to ask them to hike up the small rise for the first time and see what they find.  If they haven’t seen the lake before it is a great view.

Also, there are a few lake restrictions.  Canoes up to 17 feet and boats 14 feet and under are permitted.  All canoes & boats must have proper floatation devices on board. Gasoline motorsprohibited.   An Urban Fishing License is required and live baitfish is not allowed.

Seven Locations On The Way From Tucson

Scenic Trip To Mt Lemmon Camping Sites

Mt Lemmon campingMt Lemmon camping is available at 7 campsites along the General Hitchcock Highway on the trip from Tucson AZ to Summerhaven. The General Hitchcock Highway ( also know as the Catalina Highway) is considered one of the most scenic drives in the Southwest.

Interestingly, during the days of the cold war, the high altitude location was home to long range radar units that constantly scanned the skies for aircraft and missiles.

Today, the 61 inch telescope of the Steward Observatory works to find celestial targets. The observatory was instrumental in mapping the lunar surface in preparation for the first moon landing. Steward Observatory along with Kitt Peak are popular attractions in Southern Arizona.
