Lake Mead

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Scenic Spot For Water Sports In Arizona

Lake Mead Arizona NevadaLake Mead is a man-made lake that lies on the Colorado River. It got its name after Elwood Mead. He was the commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1924 to 1936.

The years when the planning and construction of Hoover Dam took place.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area replaced the “Boulder Canyon Project” in 1947.

The northern most point of Lake Mead is about 24 mi from the Las Vegas Strip. But its southern waters are in Arizona.

It is the largest reservoir in the United States based on water capacity. Lake Mead is the result of building the Hoover Dam in 1935.

Water from Lake Mead servers the states of Arizona, California and Nevada. Water from the lake is, with some surprise, supplied all the way to Mexico.

Its A Big Lake

It has more than 750 miles of shoreline. That provides visitors a day at the beach and boat rides into little coves. Or the opportunity to catch a big one.

South of Lake Mead you find Lake Mohave. The combination of these three water masses creates Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

At the southern end of Lake Mohave you find Cottonwood Basin. It is the southern most body of water and in the state of Arizona at Bullhead City. This small Arizona town is about 3 hours from the Grand Canyon.

Visitors come for boating, fishing, jet skiing, camping, and swimming.

Hiking and outdoor activities extend year round as the weather is usually sunny and hot. But understand, the midsummer temps are scorchers.

The scenery is impressive. Clear blue water beneath gaunt rocky cliffs. But boats are the mode of transportation to get to best scenes.

There aren’t many paved roads to get you there. But by boat, the sheltered coves offer empty beaches for camping and splashing around. Much of the land surrounding the lake is open desert and not very scenic.

See points of interest and locations for the area ….. HERE

The Bad News

In recent years the amount of water in the lake has decreased due to drought. The reservoir is less than 40% full and the surface level has fallen by over 100 feet.

Declining water levels forced marinas and boat ramps to relocated to other areas on the lake or close.

If your are considering a visit to the Lake Mead National Recreational Area take the time to get the latest updates for the area.

By The Way

It may seem odd, but Arizona has more boats per capita than any state in the United States. And if you live in Tucson AZ it is only a 6 hr drive to San Diego and the Pacific Ocean.

Roosevelt Lake is northeast of Phoenix and about 2 1/2 hours from Tucson. So if you like boating and water sports don’t rule out Tucson, AZ.

The Place To Go For Air Plane Nostalgia

A Great Place To Spend The Day

Pima Air and Space Museum Tucson ArizonaPima Air And Space Museum is a dream come true for aviation enthusiasts. The Pima Air & Space Museum is one of the largest displays of aircraft in one place. And it is right here in Tucson, AZ.

The EAA museum in Oshkosh Wisconsin is the mecca for experimental aircraft and the once a year EAA Fly-In is amazing. But the Pima Air and Space Museum is a stellar attraction.

Pima Air and Space Museum is the largest non-government funded aviation museums in the world.

There are over 300 aircraft and spacecraft to see and many are historically significant and technically advanced craft ever produced.

How Big Is It?

Pima Air and Space Museum sits on 80 acres at 6000 East Valencia Road, Tucson, AZ. A large number of the museum’s aircraft are displayed outside with the remainder located in one of the museum’s display hangars.

This affords visitors to enjoy the museum even on those “warm” days. The grounds are expansive and many visitors elect to take the tour on wheels. The tour vehicles are covered, but open on all sides. Its easy to view the aircraft, but in summer it may be hot.

You can also walk, but in either case be sure to take water with you.

Where To Find The Pima Air and Space Museum

To get to the Pima Air and Space Museum, exit from I 10 at Valencia and go east on Valencia about 2 miles.  It will be on the south side of the street.

The Museum is open seven days a week, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last admission at 4:00 p.m. The Museum is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. Parking is free.

The Museum is a pet-friendly facility.  A walking tour starts at  the Wright Flyer at 10:30 and inside Hangar 3 at 11:30.

Tucson Rodeo Parade

The Tucson Rodeo Parade In The Spirit Of The Old West

Make Time To See This Annual Tucson AZ In February

Tucson Rodeo Parade

tucson rodeo paradeWhat so special about the Tucson Rodeo Parade? The answer is likely to be “not much” if you are from the east coast, midwest or west coast. But if you are from southern Arizona, its part of the fabric of who you are.

The first Tucson Rodeo and Rodeo Parade took place on February 21, 1925. That’s over 90 years ago. And it is still going strong.

The 1925 parade was small compared to today. But none the less, it was an extraordinary event.

Tucson Rodeo Parade History

Now here is an interesting bit of the history. The parade was lead by Major Nuestatter. Tucson’s veteran Parade Leader. Veteran Parade Leader? Not sure if that job is still open today. But he must have been very good.

Following Major Nuestatter was the 25th Infantry Band from Nogales. Then a platoon of Reserve Officers. After them polo players, cowboys and cowgirls, buggies, wagons, and Indians. Bringing up the rear was the 10th U.S. Cavalry from Ft. Hoachuca.

For the 34,000 people living in Tucson, AZ in 1925 the Tucson Rodeo and Rodeo Parade was not a big event. In fact, many wondered why it was necessary. Why? It was considered pretentious.

Now look back for a moment. In 1925, most of Tucson’s streets were dirt. Stop signs did not exist. Entertainment was from the radio and phonograph. Church socials and musicals were popular activities of the time.

Why was a rodeo or parade necessary? Tucson was surrounded by rodeos every day. Most ranches and private schools had rodeos. But even though many people considered the event a waste of time it was a huge success.

Tucson Rodeo Parade Today

The Tucson Rodeo Parade is a beloved tradition in Tucson, AZ. And remains one of the prominent displays of the Old West. Area schools are closed on Parade Day along with some local businesses.

Over 200 non-motorized floats are in the rodeo parade each year. And over 200,000 fans watch the western-themed floats, buggies, and historic horse-drawn coaches along the parade route.

Rodeo Parade Route

The Parade begins at 9 am. It starts on Ajo Highway 1/2 mile east of Park Ave. Goes east to Park Avenue, then south on Park to Irvington Rd. Proceeds west on Irvington to Sixth Avenue and turns north on Sixth Avenue. Then goes to the North end of the Tucson Rodeo Grounds.

Like Horse Races?

Winter visitors and Tucson residents should take some time to see this annual event. You might even want to spend an afternoon at the Tucson Rodeo. Another bit of Tucson history during the February/March period is at the Rillito Race Park. Quarter horse racing and people watching at its finest. Did you know the photo finish was started at the Rillito Race Park?

And should you find Tucson and the majestic mountains we live in a place you may want to call home, we can help.

Fini’s Landing

Fini’s Landing – A Casual Beach Comber Restaurant In The Foothills

The Unique Bronzed Flip Flop Handle Will Help You Remember

Fini's Landing northeast TucsonFini’s Landing is a beach comber themed restaurant in Tucson’s northeast area. For those without WAZE, it is west of North Swan Road and north of East Sunrise Drive….MAP.

Its theme emanates from the experiences for the owners Scott and FIni. Tucson natives who experienced the oceans of the Caribbean, Florida Keys and California. Through in Mexico as well.

Fini’s has a big local clientele, but don’t let that keep you away. If you are in the northeast area Fini’s deserves a stop.

This is also a great place for sports fans with 11 big TV’s in the right places to let everyone see the games.

If you have been to the southeast low country or the Caribbean you know the vibe. But what is interesting is that even if you haven’t, Fini’s feels like a home away from home as you walk through the door.

Fini’s Landing Is A Great Place To Meet UP

A great spot to meet up with friends with great food, bit selection of beers and good service

Patio seating is available, but the traffic on Swan can be a bit noise.

Fini’s Landing creates a beach bar atmosphere in the foothills.

The menu has something for everyone! Two of our favorites are the Chubasco Shrimp Tacos and The Landing Cobb salad.

But take a look at the menu and find your favorite – Fini’s Landing Menu.

Catalina MountainsThe Catalina Mountains are on the north and northeast edge of Tucson Arizona. The Catalina Mountains are officially the Santa Catalina Mountains. Many locals just call them the “Catalinas”.

The Catalina Mountain range is the most prominent of the 5 mountain ranges surrounding Tucson. The other ranges are the Tucson Mountains, Tortolita Mountains, Rincon Mountains and Santa Rita Mountains.

The highest point in the Catalinas is Mount Lemmon at an elevation of over 9,147 feet above sea level. The peaks of the Catalina Mountains and Mount Lemmon receive about 180 inches of snow each year.

Mount Lemmon Ski Valley is also there. The ski area is the southernmost ski destination in the United States. Also, the village of Summerhaven is on Mount Lemmon.

The Catalina Mountains are part of the Coronado National Forest. CNF is managed by the Santa Catalina Ranger District. The Catalina Mountains are a prominent range in the Madrean sky islands. The Madrean Region is in the northeast perimeter of the Sonoran Desert of and the United States.

A trip from the Tucson valley to Mt. Lemmon takes you from 2,000 to about 9,000 feet, with scenery that resembles a trip from the Mexican to the Canadian border.

The Catalina Mountains provides residents with many recreational areas. One of those is Sabino Canyon. One of the favorite activities is hiking.

Sabino Canyon

Sabino Canyon is on the east side of Tucson. It is a unique experience. Its streams and perennial pools seem out of place in the desert. The canyon brings visitors from all over the world to embrace it beauty.

Flowing streams and waterfalls in the desert. It seems odd, but its true. Sabino Canyon has a day-hiking access point to the mountains. Pack a lunch, bring water and wear comfortable shoes.

Catalina State Park sits at the western foothills of the Catalina Mountains. In 2013, the Catalina Bighorn Advisory Committee was formed to restore Bighorn sheep in the Catalina Mountains.

Bighorn sheep were released into the Catalina Mountains in two groups. One in November 2013 and in the fall of 2014. As of July2015, there are 40 Bighorn sheep roaming the Catalina Mountains and again bringing their majestic images to the area.

The Catalina Foothills is a residential area north of Tucson. Not surprisingly, the area sits in the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Find homes in the Catalina Foothills.

Trails And More Trails

Sabino Canyon Trail

The Sabino Canyon Recreation area is one of the most visited outdoor sites in Tucson. Hikers are estatic with this 8-mile (round trip) trail. It is a hiker “friendly” trail suitable for the most experienced to the least.

Mt. Lemmon Meadow Loop

This easy, 1.5-mile (round trip) loop through tall pine trees at the top of the mountain. It offers wonderful views of Tucson and Oro Valley and features views of an active lookout tower.

Romero Pools Trail

This 5.5-mile hike (round trip) is in the Catalina State Park in Oro Valley. It is a moderate effort hike with a superb picnic site and scenic views. The swimming hole has slippery rocks and deep pools.

Blackett’s Ridge Trail

This moderate, 7-mile (round trip) hike may be a bit intense for first timers. The trail follows a narrow, sheer-walled ridge overlooking Sabino Canyon northeast of Tucson. It provides an exhilarating workout and great views.

Finger Rock Trail

This trail is NOT for the novis hiker. It is a strenuous 6-mile (round trip) hike. It starts out easy for the first mile, and then gets harder as the trail begins to steepen. The trailhead is at the north end of Alvernon Way and offers spectacular views of the city.

Ventana Canyon Trail

Another challenging hike for well trained hikers. It is a 6.4-mile hike that begins at Loews Ventana Canyon Resort. The trail provides a rugged and steep trail up Ventana Canyon. The hike is tough, but at the top of the peak is a spectacular rock arch.

One More Thing – Permits

If you have not hiked these trails before, look into getting a map or hiking guide. Most hiking-camping supply stores will have maps or hiking guides.

Another option is to contact local hiking groups for suggestions. The Summit Hut and Southern Arizona Hiking Club are good places to start.

Last, but not least, check with the Coronado National Forest about hiking permits. They are necessary to hike in some areas.

The Tucson Mountains are not high compared to the Santa Catalina Mountains. They rise to only 4,687 feet.

This mountains range is the remains of a more than 15-mile-long collapsed volcano. For the Geologists, that is a volcanic caldera.

The eruption occurred some 70 million years ago. And the force was greater then the Mount St. Helens eruption in 1980.

The rock layers in the mountains reveal a pre-historic landscape. It included a large oyster-rich freshwater lake near what today is Wasson Peak.

Dinosaurs roamed around the lake. And camels trod the mudflats. While mastodons fed on the grass around the lake.

Southern Arizona Mountain Ranges

The volcanic cycle that created the Tucson Mountains created other mountain ranges in southern Arizona. In Tucson, the Silver Bell Mountains, Sierrita Mountains and Santa Rita Mountains.

The Chiricahua Mountains in southeast Arizona to shape. And the Superstition Mountains near Apache Junction, AZ. Along with other notable Arizona ranges.

A notable spot in the area is the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. This world renown museum is on the west side of the Tucson Mountains. Two other parks in the Tucson Mountains are the Saguaro National and Tucson Mountain County Parks.
