El Presidio Tucson was Tucson’s first neighborhood and a key point in Tucson history. It was adjacent to the walled Spanish fort call Presidio San Agustin del Tucson.
Thus its name. It holds the distinction as the largest Presidio built by the Spaniards in North America.
The “El Presidio” refer to the fort that replaced the Tubac outpost for the Spanish in the New World.
Colonel Hugo O’Connor platted the El Presidio in 1775. Spanish, Mexican, and Native American people built the facility.
A few of the homes survive on what remains of the old fort. The forts perimeter generally bordered by Church, Pennington, Washington, and Main Street.
The fort boasted of walls that were three feet thick and 12 feet high. Raised bastions at the northeast and southeast corners created a impressive site. In total the fort encompassed about 10 acres.
The population increased and ownership changed from Spanish to Mexican in 1821. However, the low, flat roofed adobe buildings in Tucson remained the same.
The Historic District
El Presidio became a historical district in 1975.
The neighborhood is about 12 blocks just north of downtown. Boundaries of the neighborhood are Sixth Street, Alameda Street, Granada Avenue anf Church Avenue.
El Presidio Tucson contains over 80 architecturally significant homes. These homes were constructed between the mid-1800’s and 1912.
Many of the design characteristics found in El Presidio Tucson are also found in the Barrio and Armory Park.
The homes along Meyer Street are steeped in Spanish-Mexican influences. Thick adobe walled Sonoran row houses share walls to moderate the Tucson heat. On Main the home styles reflect an influence of the eastern U. S.

Dinosaurs roamed around the lake. And camels trod the mudflats. While mastodons fed on the grass around the lake.

A great place to visit is Old Tucson Studios. Once an important location for western movies. John Wayne is among the many stars to have made movies there.
Old Tucson Studios are open the year around. This “step back” in time also provides visitors many one time experiences. Stunt shows, gunfights, and musical reviews. Movies are still filmed there.
The Park

Trails To Explore
Tumamoc Hill
This easy hike (3.1-mile round trip) up a well-paved hill offers fantastic views of the city. It is also a perfect spot for watching the sunrise and sunset.
Valley View Overlook Trail
An easy family hike (.8-mile round trip) within Saguaro National Park West. Not long and once you reach the ridge there are great views within a 35-mile radius.
Yetman Trail
This moderate (12-mile round trip) hike is in Tucson Mountain Park. The name Yetman Trail spotlights David Yetman. Yetman, an environmentalist, hosts KUAT’s public television series “The Desert Speaks.”
Starr Pass Trail
The Richard Genser Starr Pass Trailhead begins near Starr Pass Resort. It is the primary trailhead access to Tucson Mountain Park. The Rock Wren Trail connects the trailhead to the Tucson Mountain Park Trail System.
King Canyon Trail
A moderate (6.5-mile round trip) trek to the summit of Wasson Peak in the Tucson Mountains. Along the way hikers see a vast selection of desert cacti. Among them are the giant saguaro, prickly pear and barrel cactus. Other desert flora include cholla cactus, ocotillo, along with mesquite, and paloverde trees.

The Arizona Inn shares a prominent place in the history of Tucson Arizona. In the heart of Tucson concealed by a typical Spanish wall of that era you will find the Arizona Inn.
The Arizona Inn opened in December 1930, just 13 months after the stock market crash of October 1929 and ensuing great depression.
The history of the Arizona Inn is as storied as the names of the people who have stayed there.
To start, the creator of the Arizona Inn was Isabella Greenway. Isabella Greenway was Arizona’s first Congresswoman and a friend of Eleanor Roosevelt. Plenty of family and friends of the Roosevelt’s and other Washington dignitaries have stayed there.
Senator John Kennedy was a guest in early 1958. Salvidor Dali, Howard Hughes and a host of others have all been guests
A Time To Be Remembered
A stay at the Arizona Inn is a glimpse into the days of Humphery Bogart, Gary Cooper and Clark Gable (he stayed there). It is very quiet and the rooms are spacious to accommodate guests that arrived by train and stayed for months, not just a day or two.
After arriving at the Tucson train station, they endured a 2 mile ride on bumpy roads to get to the hotel on the outskirts of Tucson.
The grounds of this 95 room hotel provided abundant space to walk, relax and get away. The large library echoes a time when people read books, yes, real books, for relaxation and entertainment.
Quiet, comfortable and close to the services of the hotel. A day could flash by as one delved into the classic words and images of Hemingway or Steinbeck.
The Arizona Inn closed for the summer until 1974. Today, the Arizona Inn is open all year around.
It remains family owned and operated since opening in 1930. Four generations of family have welcomed guests and allowed them to share the vision of Isabella Greenway.

Believe it or not, the history of Tucson began around 10,000 B.C. About that time Paleoindian ad Archaic hunters migrated to the area.
Those events puts Tucson on the list of one of the oldest inhabited locations in North America.
And Hohokam Indians are a key part of Tucson history. This tribe farmed for 4,000 years before Spanish missionaries and soldiers arrived. The Spanish arrived in the later part of the 1600s.
Tucson is in the Southern part of Arizona in the Southwest United States. The city sits in a Sonoran Desert valley surrounded by 5 mountain ranges.
An obscure fact is that the trip from the 2,389-foot valley floor to the 9,157-foot Mt. Lemmon peak traverses seven of the earth’s nine life zones.
To put that in perspective, that is the same as driving from Mexico to Canada.
National parks abound. These include the Coronado National Forest, Ironwood and Forest National Monument. And the Saguaro National Parks two locations – East and West.
Hohokam Tribes Inhabit The Area Around 200 A.D.
Between A.D. 200 and 1450 period of Tucson history, the Hohokam tribes flourished. Todays Pima and Tohono O’odham cultures are the descendants of that society. They have lived in the region since the Hohokam decline.
Around 1540 the Coronado Expedition crosses Arizona in search of the “7 Cities of Gold.” Father Francisco Kino establishes the Mission San Xavier del Bac in 1699.
It took almost 100 years to build. The mission has been a focus for Tucson history since that time.
The history of Tucson includes the Mission San Agustin. Mission San Augstin, a “visita” of San Xavier, was established on the western bank of the Santa Cruz River in 1757. The mission and monastery were completed in the 1790’s.
The City of Tucson Is Established In 1775
Around 1775, Hugo O’Conor establishes the Tucson Presido. That is the formal birthday of Tucson. Tucson was part of Mexico during Mexico’s fight for independence from Spain in 1821.
Eventually the town was named “Tucsón” and was part of the Mexican state of Occidente. Upon its gaining independence from Spain, Occidente later became know as Sonora about 1830.
Mormon soldiers came along the San Pedro River, north of Tucson, around 1846. The Mormon soldiers fought the “Battle of the Bulls” during this point in Tucson history. This was actually a skirmish between the soldiers and wild cattle roaming the area. The engagement resulted in 2 soldiers being injured and a large number of pounds of fresh meat for the soldiers.
On December 16, 1846, the Mormon soldiers marched into Tucson. The small Mexican garrison of Fort Tucson, promptly fled without conflict. Tucson history records a brief occupation by the Mormon soldiers before they continued their procession to the Pacific.
Tucson Become Part Of The United States With The Gadsden Purchase
The Gadsden Purchase by the United States in 1854 is a key date in Tucson history. With out it, Tucson may still be part of Mexico. On that date, Tucson came under the jurisdiction of the United States. A few years later, Arizona becomes an official territory in 1863. Between 1867 and 1877, Tucson was the capitol of the Arizona territory.
In 1880, the Southern Pacific Railroad reaches Tucson and the migration of people from the eastern cities to the Southwest began in earnest. Tucson history shows the population of Tucson at this time was about 8,000.
In 1885, the University of Arizona, was founded as a land-grant college on over-grazed ranch land between Tucson and Fort Lowell. This is also the time of Wyatt Earp and the Earp brothers being in Tombstone. The fight at the OK Coral has been a topic of TV shows and movies for many years.
Arizona Becomes The 48th State And Grows
In 1912, Arizona becomes the 48th state in the Union.
By 1950 Tucson’s population has reached 120,000. Just 10 years later, it nearly doubled to 220,000. In 2012 the population of the Tucson greater metropolitan area stands at 992,000. Estimates for the 2020 census suggest over 1 million now reside in the greater Tucson metro area.

Visiting Tombstone Is a Great Day Trip from Tucson AZ
Tombstone Arizona
The town of Tombstone AZ means many things to many people. For some, images of drunken cowboys, gunfights and dusty streets come to mind.
Gunfights were frequent in the Tombstone during the 1880″s. But the most famous gunfight involved Wyatt Earp and his brothers Morgan and Virgil. And of course, Doc Holliday.
Hundreds of western movies have made it famous.
Over 50 different movie and TV projects focus on the mid 1800’s in Tombstone. And the leading character in every show was Wyatt Earp.
Watching television during the 50’s and 60’s brought the old west into many homes. Many shows and movies presented the history of Tombstone AZ and the events that took place there.
And the youth today don’t realize that Tombstone AZ is a real town. And real people still live there.
Tombstone, the town to tough to die is 60 miles southeast of Tucson AZ. Some families are decedents of those who have lived here in the “good old days”.
The generations that have stayed is a key reason Tombstone AZ is called “The Town Too Tough to Die.”
To Set the Stage – No Pun Intended
Tombstone AZ got its name from a silver miner named Ed Schieffelin.
Schieffelin was a army guide at nearby Camp Huachuca. He believed the surrounding mountains held the promise of silver and gold.
When the occasion allowed, Ed would go to the mountains and dig for ore. As he was venturing out one day, a soldier cautioned about the Apache’s in the area. The soldier Ed he wouldn’t find riches in the mountains. and that “All you’ll find in those hills is your tombstone”.
In February 1878, while hiding from Apache Indians, Schieffelin found silver. And with the soldier’s comments in mind, he registered the lots as; “the Tombstone” and “the Graveyard”.
Shortly afterwards, Ed found two more areas with silver ore. Ed was right and the soldier wasn’t.
Interestingly, Camp Huachuca is now Fort Huachuca, the headquarters for Army intelligence in Sierra Vista AZ.
Silver and Gold
Between 1880 and 1886, over 40 million dollars in silver came from the area. To put that in perspective, that is around 1.7 billion dollars in the present day economy.
Needless to say, Tombstone Arizona flourished. Its population grew from 100 to around 15,000 in less than seven years. And as it grew and easy money became available. Many outlaws and criminals found their way to Tombstone AZ.
With the bad guys came the law. Some lawmen arrived without notoriety, but became legends. Wyatt Earp was one of those. Wyatt arrived in the summer of 1879. He had been an undistinguished peace officer in the Kansas cow towns of Wichita and Dodge City.
Wyatt was also a part-time gambler or “sporting man”. His arrival in Tombstone coincided with the early beginnings of the silver boom.
In the spring and summer of 1880, Earp did well for himself as a gambler. Seeing opportunity, he invested gambling winnings in various mining and water-rights proposals.
Although becoming rich, Wyatt and his brothers did little to distinguish themselves.
Shoot Out At The OK Coral
On the morning of October 25, 1881, Ike Clanton and Tom McLaury came into Tombstone for supplies. Over the next 24 hours, the two men had several violent run-ins with the Earps and their friend Doc Holliday.
The next day, Ike’s brother Billy rode into town to join them, along with Frank McLaury and Billy Claiborne. The first person they met in the local saloon was Holliday. And he informs them that their brothers had both been pistol-whipped by the Earps. Frank and Billy immediately left the saloon, vowing revenge.
With suspicion raised, the Earps and Holliday patrolled the town. They spotted the members of the Clanton-McLaury gang in a vacant lot behind the OK Corral.
The famous gunfight that ensued. It lasted about 30 seconds with around 30 shots fired.
There is still debated about who fired the first shot. But legend suggests it was Virgil Earp. At the faceoff, he pulled out his revolver and shot Billy Clanton point-blank in the chest.
Doc Holliday then fired a shotgun blast at Tom McLaury’s chest.
Wyatt wounded Frank McLaury with a shot in the stomach. But he Frank managed to get off a few shots before collapsing. Ss did Billy Clanton.
When the dust cleared, Billy Clanton and the McLaury brothers were dead. Virgil, Morgan Earp and Doc Holliday got shot. But the wounds were minor.
And Ike Clanton and Claiborne had run for the hills.
Sheriff John Behan of Cochise County saw the shootout. He charged the Earps and Holliday with murder.
But a month later, a Tombstone judge found the men not guilty. He ruled that they were “justified in committing these homicides.”
The Good, The Bad, The Legend
But in the early 1880’s, Tombstone Arizona was one of the most notorious and violent towns in the west. And at the same time may also have been one of the more civilized. The city boosted 4 churches, a school, two banks, a newspaper (“The Epitaph”) and one opera house.
Although Ed Schieffelin founded Tombstone, it persists because of Wyatt Earp, his brothers and Doc Holliday. Their exploits on the Arizona frontier of the early 1880’s made them and Tombstone a legend.
The gun fight at the OK Corral took place in 1881. Of all the gun fights in the history of Tombstone this 30 second stands out. The dramatic confrontation left three men dead and three wounded. In less than a minute, around 30 shots were fired. And it created the legend and history of Wyatt Earp.
The Tombstone of Ed Schieffelin
In the northwest corner of Tombstone AZ is the famous Boot hill graveyard. And just behind the Tombstone graveyard is a solitary pyramid looking stone monument.
It marks the grave of Ed Schieffelin. His resting place is the spot were he was hiding from the Apaches and found the silver ore that made him rich.
Many of the buildings have stood for over 100 years and the street scenes will whisk you back to that first Glenn Ford western. Buggy rides will take you for a tour of Tombstone.
Walk through the Boot hill cemetery and read the classic epitaphs from long ago – Here lies Lester Moore, four shots from a 44, No Les, No More.
Tombstone is a great day trip, along with Bisbee and Tubac. All are within 90 minutes from Tucson and great places to help you “Relive the Old West”!

Tombstone AZ is about an hour drive from Tucson AZ. It is a great day trip and well worth the time. Visitors are treated to reenactments of the gun fight at the OK coral through out the day.
