Kartchner Caverns Call 520-586-2283

A Tucson Must See Attraction

kartchner caverns state park tucson azKartchner Caverns is among the more interesting Tucson day trips you could take. The “Caverns” are in the Kartchner Caverns State Park about an hour southeast of Tucson near Benson, AZ.

It is a downright must day trip for close friends and family visitors. Be sure to schedule a reservation! It is an very popular place!

If you expect to take photos, forget it. Leave your personal things in the car.  It is just you and the clothes you are wearing.

To protect the caves, cameras, back packs, purses, food or drink are allowed in the cave.  It eliminates the  opportunity to have something dropped or left in the caves accidentally.

Be Prepared

The cave is cool and moist at 68 degrees and 98 % humidity year round. A very lightweight jacket or garment is all you will need.

Wheelchairs are permitted in the caves. However strollers, walkers, crutches or motorized scooters are not allowed.

The Kartchner Caves is a top notch operation. There is an eye catching interpretive centre full of cave displays and information. This is also where you will check in for the tour.

It is better to be a little early. This will give you time to fully explore the center and all the displays there. When your tour is called, head outdoors and get on the tram. The tram will take you up the hill to the caves. All Kartchner Caverns Tours are led and narrated.

The tour can last between 1  1 / 2 to 2 hours.  The entrance to the caves is through a couple of airlocks. These are living caves. The operators are impassioned about safeguarding the integrity of the cave. They manage the atmospherics and do every thing they can to avoid damage to the caves.

After the tour stop back at the gift shop to pick up a gift or memento. Do this after the tour because you will not be allowed to carry your purchases on the tour.

Other Things To See Around Tucson

Lake Mead

Lake Mead National Recreation Area

Scenic Spot For Water Sports In Arizona

Lake Mead Arizona NevadaLake Mead is a man-made lake that lies on the Colorado River. It got its name after Elwood Mead. He was the commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation from 1924 to 1936.

The years when the planning and construction of Hoover Dam took place.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area replaced the “Boulder Canyon Project” in 1947.

The northern most point of Lake Mead is about 24 mi from the Las Vegas Strip. But its southern waters are in Arizona.

It is the largest reservoir in the United States based on water capacity. Lake Mead is the result of building the Hoover Dam in 1935.

Water from Lake Mead servers the states of Arizona, California and Nevada. Water from the lake is, with some surprise, supplied all the way to Mexico.

Its A Big Lake

It has more than 750 miles of shoreline. That provides visitors a day at the beach and boat rides into little coves. Or the opportunity to catch a big one.

South of Lake Mead you find Lake Mohave. The combination of these three water masses creates Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

At the southern end of Lake Mohave you find Cottonwood Basin. It is the southern most body of water and in the state of Arizona at Bullhead City. This small Arizona town is about 3 hours from the Grand Canyon.

Visitors come for boating, fishing, jet skiing, camping, and swimming.

Hiking and outdoor activities extend year round as the weather is usually sunny and hot. But understand, the midsummer temps are scorchers.

The scenery is impressive. Clear blue water beneath gaunt rocky cliffs. But boats are the mode of transportation to get to best scenes.

There aren’t many paved roads to get you there. But by boat, the sheltered coves offer empty beaches for camping and splashing around. Much of the land surrounding the lake is open desert and not very scenic.

See points of interest and locations for the area ….. HERE

The Bad News

In recent years the amount of water in the lake has decreased due to drought. The reservoir is less than 40% full and the surface level has fallen by over 100 feet.

Declining water levels forced marinas and boat ramps to relocated to other areas on the lake or close.

If your are considering a visit to the Lake Mead National Recreational Area take the time to get the latest updates for the area.

By The Way

It may seem odd, but Arizona has more boats per capita than any state in the United States. And if you live in Tucson AZ it is only a 6 hr drive to San Diego and the Pacific Ocean.

Roosevelt Lake is northeast of Phoenix and about 2 1/2 hours from Tucson. So if you like boating and water sports don’t rule out Tucson, AZ.

Tucson Water

Tucson Water Resources

Information On Supply and Quality

Tucson WaterTucson Water is a frequent topic for people thinking of moving to Tucson. Supply and quality of Tucson water are the specific questions.

The BIG question first!

Does Tucson have enough water?

In a word…… YES!

Tucson’s water supply appears to be adequate for today and the foreseeable future. There is no water shortage in Tucson.

Tucson Water comes from wells across the Tucson area. Tucson is located on top of an aquifer. The size of the aquifer is gigantic. Research suggests it will provide Tucson water for many years.

Tucson water is also supplied from the Colorado River. Water is moved from the Colorado River to the aquifer via the Central Arizona Project (CAP). This is a canal that runs through the middle of Arizona. It supplies a number of cities with water from the river.

Although Tucson possess plenty of water it is understood water conservation is important. Water preservation policies have been put in place.

“Recharge Basins” are an example. Basins in many places throughout Tucson. Basins are depressions in the ground designed to collect water. Rain being the greatest source collected. The basins allow the collected water  to seep back down to the aquifer.

Recycling at its finest!

Reclaimed water projects have been put in place. These projects provide reclaimed water to large volume users. For example, golf courses.

Making a complex issue simple. There is a huge amount of Tucson water available. There are no water restrictions! However, planning for the long range future is an ongoing process.

Tucson water quality varies greatly based on the specific area in Tucson. The overall quality of Tucson water is good. With that said, water purification or water softeners become a personal preference.

The City of Tucson Website provides additional information on the Tucson Water supply.

Glendale Arizona Homes

Glendale Arizona

Find Homes For Sale In This Suburban Area Near Phoenix

Glendale ArizonaGlendale Arizona is about 9 miles northwest of the Phoenix downtown center.

With a population of over 300,000, it is hard to imagine it was a desert wasteland in early 1900’s.

The Glendale story is interesting, but not an unusual in those times.

Enter William Murphy from Flagstaff Arizona.

He lead the construction of a section of the Arizona Canal for the Arizona Canal Company. The section from New River to Granite Reef in 1885. When done, Murphy found himself deep in debt.

Murphy had decided to accept Arizona Canal Company stock, bonds and land, not cash for payment.

To resolve his lack of cash, Murphy created the Arizona Improvement Company. His thinking was to sell the land and water rights near the canal. To that end, Murphy named the land he intended to sell “Glendale”.

From that beginning, Glendale Arizona has grown along with Phoenix and surrounding areas.

Glendale hosted the 2015 Superbowl game and various MLB training camps in the spring.

Market Update – September 2022

Active Listings at the end of September 2022 increased 10.2% from August 2022 to 2,337 single family homes on the market. Year over year the inventory of homes for sale increased 40.1%  from September 2021. Active listings continue to increase, but remain at historical low levels.

The Fed is attempting to slow inflation through higher Fed fund rates and increased them 75 basis points in September. Although mortgage rates are not directly linked to the Fed funds rate,  mortgage rates increased as well and moved up over the 7% level.

Many “experts” believe the Fed will increase rates another 75 basis points in November 2022.

The All Souls Procession in Tucson takes place on November 6, 2022. A Tucson tradition since 1990, it is the first big annual event of the year.

Tucson’s Dia de Los Muertos-inspired is a community fixture every fall since 1990. Supporters are coming back after the pandemic altered the course of humanity for over a year now.

If you like watching people you can’t miss the procession start at Grande Avenue and Speedway Boulevard. It is part theater and part remembrance. It ranks among the largest of such celebrations in America.

Blue WillowAn Eclectic Restaurant With Great Food

Blue Willow restaurant is an eclectic place with great food and a unique gift shop.

Before or after dining wander around the gift shop to find fun, quirky, and inexpensive gifts.

The menu is standard American fare with quite a few vegetarian and vegan options. The patio is the place to dine, unless it is a super hot day. For breakfast, my favorite is the very filling blueberry pancake.

Premier Tucson Homes Newsletter November 2022Gardening Tips For November

Cooler, longer nights are here, and fall gardening activities are thick on the ground. When considering what to plant and prune, and when to do it, don’t forget about our frost dates.

Officially, our average historic first and last frost dates are Nov. 18 and March 14. We are likely to have frost or freezing for a few days during the December through February period.

Water: Adjust drip system for fall and cooling temps.

Prune: Only if there is a safety concern since we are going into the cooler fall/winter season.

Plant: Remember to group plants with similar water needs together.

  • Native perennials now
  • Wildflowers such as penstemons, daleas, mallows.
  • Plant your cool-season veggies: Arugula, beets, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, etc.

With the cooler weather bring your succulents indoors sometime this month if they are tender.
