eloy arizona city sealThe Town of Eloy Arizona is on the east side of I-10 southeast of Casa Grande. Both towns are in Pinal County roughly midway between Tucson and Phoenix.

The history of the Eloy is interesting. And without the Mexican-American war from 1846 to 1848, Eloy may never exist.

Before the war the Mexican border with the United States was the Rio Grande River.

Although unrelated to the war, The Gadsden Purchase also in occurred in 1848. It made the territory from the Rio Grande to what is today’s Mexican border part of the United States.

With the Gadsden Purchase, railroads had an easier route to lay track from the west coast to the east. The flat desert meant no mountains to climb or tunnels to build.

Working On The Railroad

And as planned, the railroads came to this vast area. The Southern Pacific created towns along the route. One of them was Eloy.

Other notable towns in Arizona are Yuma and Tucson. Both stops on the Southern Pacific Railroad.

The tracks spread from Yuma east in 1877 and headed east. But in 1879 worked stopped. And where it stopped became Casa Grande.

Work restarted in 1880 and the Southern Pacific continued it journey to the east.

Railroads To Agriculture In The Desert?

As people settled in the Eloy and Casa Grande area agricultural endeavors began. One crop was cotton. And with the right amount of irrigation, it flourished.

So much so that the citizens of Eloy wanted to rename the town Cotton City. But the railroads would not accept it. They would not deliver the mail to Cotton City. Only Eloy.

So, Eloy stayed Eloy. And “Terminus” became Casa Grande.

Eloy, AZ is a south of Casa Grande a few miles. Roughly at the intersection of the I-8 and I-10 freeways. It is closer to Tucson, AZ.

Eloy, Arizona has grown to over 175,000 homes built in a master plan communities. One of the larger being the active adult community of Robson Ranch.
