Electric Vehicle Charging Stations in Tucson

Electric Vehicle Transportation in Tucson AZ

EV Public “Fast-Charging” Stations

electric transportation tucson azElectric transportation really isn’t a new concept. In fact, it just might be “daja vu all over again”.

Electric transportation vehicles were being developed in he late 19th century and early 20th century. Unfortunately, internal combustion engine technology got more traction. The ability to mass produce cheaper gasoline vehicles killed electric transportation cars.

The energy crises of the 1970s and ’80s created a rebirth of electric transportation. However, once again the electric car fell by the way side when gas shortages stopped.

Since the 1980’s, electric transportation vehicles have once again become a true reality. Advances in battery and power technologies have reduced the costs. Volatile oil prices and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions make electric transportation cars a realistic option.

Tucson is one of the original cities to receive funding from the government for Electrical Vehicle or EV Projects. This project was aimed at installing electric transportation-car chargers across America. Tucson is one of the leaders in the EV charging infrastructure.

What’s New?

In a recent study, Tucson ranked eighth among the top 10 cities for EV readiness, based on an estimate of 5.3 public charging locations per 100,000 residents. Not a lot, but a start in the right direction.

Bookmans, a local Tucson company, is making it happen. Bookmans has recently installed the first “fast-charging” system. On August 16, 2013 at Bookmans Sports Exchange store R 3330 E Speedway.

The Level 3 DC charger the system can fully charge an electric transportation car in as little as 20 minutes. This compares to 4-6 hours with a Level 2 DC charger. Bookmans currently offers free Level 2 charging at 3 of their Tucson stores. Starting October 1st, Bookmans will start charging for the Level 3 charging.

This is happy news for those conscious of the environment. Pima County has more than 2,100 electric vehicles registered. The next nearest Level 3 DC charger is located at Picacho Peak.

Sonoran Desert And Tucson AZ

The Landscape for Tucson AZ

A Brief Guide on Why the Sea of Cortez Makes the Sonoran Desert Thrive

Tucson AZ And The Sonoran Desert

Sonoran Desert Tucson AZTucson AZ is situated in the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona. The Sonoran Desert is an expansive desert area of some 110,000 square miles. Arizona and California, and of Northwestern Mexico in Sonora, Baja California and Baja California Sur are in this desert.

The western portion of the United States–Mexico border also passes through the Sonoran Desert.

The Sonoran Desert wraps around the northern end of the Gulf of California and is the hottest desert in North America. The Gulf of California, also known as the Sea of Cortez, is less than 200 miles from Tucson AZ and significantly influences Tucson’s climate.

How The Two Halves of The Sonoran Desert Were Created

The Sonoran Desert area is divided into two halves by the Gulf of California. The Baja California peninsula to the west, and the Mexican state of Sonora to the east.

The Gulf of California was created some 6 million years ago when the Baja California Peninsula was pulled from North America. This event allowed ocean water to flow into the heart of the Sonoran Desert and bring life creating moisture to the desert lands.

The Gulf of California is 700 miles long and 30 to 150 miles wide. It has an average depth of over ½ mile deep. Interestingly, the surface area of the Gulf of California is almost the same as the Sonoran Desert itself. About 100,000 square miles.

This body of water in the middle of the Sonoran Desert is the major contributor to the monsoon season rains in Tucson and Southern Arizona. As water from the Gulf evaporates, it rises into the northward flowing air currents.

The higher summer moisture causes about ½ of Tucson’s annual rainfall.

The Monsoon Season in Tucson AZ

These annual monsoon rains are essential in maintaining the diversity of the Sonoran Desert. Without the monsoons, much of the plant life and desert amphibians would not survive. There are only a few species that owe their existence to the sea that sits in the middle of the desert in which they live.

The Sonora Desert is the only place in the world where the famous saguaro cactus can be found. Other cacti found in the desert landscape include the cholla, fishhook, prickly pear and organ pipe as well as others. These cactus varieties provide food and homes to many desert mammals and birds.

The winter rains from the northwest make the Sonoran Desert bloom from late March through June. Desert flowers explode with brilliant reds, pinks, yellows, and whites’ pedals. The summer monsoons bring a second season to the desert floral landscape.

Tucson Lifestyles

Living in Arizona, especially Tucson, means the Sonora Desert is at your door. The magic of the Sonora Desert is offers Tucsonans an endless list of things to do and see. The beauty of the mountains surrounding Tucson provide home sites with desert vistas and a backdrop for most Tucson homes.

Spectacular desert sunsets that create back lighting for Saguaro cactus and trees that make the end of every day something to look forward too.

Conclusion

The Sonora Desert is a vast area with diverse and conflicting images. Dry arid land with blooming flowers in the spring. Wash flowing with water during the monsoon season.

Animal life from small lizards to large Javelina. Birds from small finches to soaring hawks. All are a part of the Sonora Desert that Tucson resides in. To get up close and personal with the desert and its wildlife visit the Sonara Desert Museum.

Use the U.S. Postal Service website to find other zip codes throughout the United States.

Marana ZIP Codes, Tucson Zip Codes & US ZIP codes are a type of postal code used within the United States.  These codes help the United States Postal Service (USPS) route mail more efficiently. Some still refer to ZIP codes as US postal codes.

The term ZIP stands for Zone Improvement Plan. The basic 5-digit format was first introduced in 1963 and later extended to add an additional 4 digits after a dash to form a ZIP+4 code.

The additional 4 digits help USPS more precisely group mail for delivery. Though ZIP codes were originally developed for USPS, many other shipping companies such as United Parcel Service (UPS), Federal Express (FedEx), DHL, and others make use of ZIP codes for sorting packages and calculating the time and cost of shipping a package (the shipping rate).

Types of Zip Codes

  1. Unique/single high-volume address (ex. 20505 for the CIA in Washington, DC)
  2. PO Box only (ex. 22313 for the PO Boxes of Alexandria, VA)
  3. Military
  4. Standard (all other ZIP codes

Despite the fact that ZIP codes seem to be geographic in nature, that wasn’t their intended purpose.  They are intended to group mail to allow the USPS to deliver mail more efficiently. In most cases, addresses in close proximity to each other are grouped in the same ZIP code which gives the appearance that ZIP codes are defined by a clear geographic boundary. However, some ZIP codes have nothing to do with geographic areas.

Tucson On List Of 5 Awesome Cities to Visit

Tucson Makes List Of 5 Cities

Esquire Makes Tucson a Top City to Visit in The U.S.

tucson awesone cityEsquire has put Tucson on its list of “awesome cities” to visit in the United States. OMG….Tucson isn’t a secret anymore. Those of us that make their home know it’s a great place to live.

And now lots more will discover our secret.

Tucson has become the hot spot in the US to visit in 2021. And it’s not because summer is coming.

A few weeks ago, Conde Nast Traveler put Tucson AZ on their “Hot List” of cities to visit in May 2021.

Tucson offers a unique array of gastronomic, architectural, and cultural appeal. And by the way, it also has 350 sunny days a year and a UNESCO City of Gastronomy designation!

What Puts Tucson On The List Of Awesome Cities?

From our perspective that is a difficult question to answer. Why?

First, we live here and are head over heels in love with Tucson and southern Arizona.

A big reason on why we love it is that there are so many things to do. No matter what your interests are.

Here are 3 of our top reasons to put Tucson on your list of one of the awesome cities to visit in the US.

Tucson History

The El Presidio Tucson. It was Tucson’s first neighborhood.

Founded in the mid 1800’s, it became prominent in Tucson history. It is next to the walled Spanish fort call Presidio San Agustin del Tucson.

This structure was the largest Presidio built by the Spaniards in North America.

The “El Presidio” refers to the fort that replaced the Tubac outpost for the Spanish in the New World.

El Presidio is in downtown Tucson. So, it will be easy to find a great place for dinner after your visit.

Awesome Dinning

Tucson offers lots of great restaurants. There isn’t a “restaurant row” in Tucson, so you will need to get directions to the ones you choose.

Tucson restaurants include small local eateries to unforgettable fine dining. We haven’t tried them all, but we have check off many on our list of places to dine.

For those interested in “fine dining” in Tucson, we especially like the La Rendez-vous.

Check out our reviews on some of the Top Tucson restaurants.

Pima Air And Space Museum

This place is a dream come true for aviation enthusiasts. By itself, it would put Tucson on the list of awesome cities.

The EAA museum in Oshkosh Wisconsin is the mecca for experimental planes. And the annual fly-in is off the charts.

But the range of planes displayed at Pima Air & Space Museum is incredible.

In fact, it is the largest non-government funded aviation museums in the world.

There are over 300 aircraft and spacecraft to see. Many are significant to the evolution of aviation history.

Aircraft are on displayed outdoors as well as in hangers. Hangers are air conditioned to allow visitors to enjoy the museum even on those “warm” summer days.

The grounds are expansive and many visitors elect to take the small tram to see the outside displays. A great idea in the summer. You can walk, but be sure you take lots water with you.

Southwest Architecture

Pueblo Indian Influence in Southwest Architecture

Tucson And Southern Arizona Are A Showplace For Pueblo Revival Architecture.

southwest architecture pueblo revial architectureSouthwest architecture has many distinctive features. The area across the US Southwest is full of glowing examples of Pueblo Revival architecture.

The Pueblo Indians of the southwest weren’t the only influence on this type of architecture, but they were extremely important.

The Pueblo style was in interwoven with the Spanish who crossed the Atlantic and fell in love the region.

One common addition to the Pueblo design that shows the Spanish influence is the prevalence of iron doors.

Similar architecture can be found across a vast portion of the US Southwest and down into Northern Mexico.

Pueblo Revival architecture began in the early 1900s, becoming a popular trend throughout the 1920s and 1930s. Here is a brief description of some evident characteristics of this southwestern style of architecture, plus some beautiful buildings you can visit to see it firsthand.

Key Aspects of Southwest Architecture

The Pueblo Revival style of architecture is a gentle blend of the indigenous peoples of the region and their Spanish ancestors. You can explore examples of both influences combined in these buildings.

Once you understand the concepts of the Pueblo Revival architectural style, you can begin to appreciate which homes have it, or how you could add it to yours. Here’s a quick list of design features that are readily seen in this type of architecture.

Adobe –

southwest architecture adobe brickAdobe is probably the most glaring attribute of Pueblo Revival architecture. Bricks are formed from red adobe clay and sun-dried. Pueblo Indians used adobe to build their homes.

Even today, homes built with thick red clay bricks are prevalent throughout the southwest.

They also made direct use of different aspects of this brick-like material for cooking and water storage. Newer Arizona homes built to resemble the style use a stucco finish made to replicate adobe.

In modern-designs, thick walls are made to resemble the actual adobe built by the Pueblo Indians. Earth tones blend into the surround landscape colors, therefore these are the most common colors of homes and buildings using this style.

Wood Support –

viga beamsWood Support – The Pueblo Revival architecture uses a lot of wood. Beams spanning entire rooms are a telltale signature of this type of home. These large timbers are referred to as vigas. Vigas are frequently a foot thick and the ends of the beams are left exposed.

Many of the original Pueblo homes show evidence of this design feature. The beams stick through the walls and are visible from outside the home. It is not uncommon to see crude wooden ladders adjacent to a home.

During the latter part of the 12th century, a period when the Puebloan population increased in the area, they built multistory dwellings into the cliffs. To gain access to various levels; instead of staircases they simply used wooden ladders.

Flat Roofs –

Flat Roofs – While the exterior design of Pueblo Revival architecture predominately uses rounded corners, the roofs are flat. The flat roof tops may have a very slight slant to them and have an outside wall extending above the roof line.

These extensions were called parapets. Drainage openings were cut above the roof line. There is no indication of the actual reason for this unique wall design, other than possibly protection from enemies.

Pueblo Revival Style in Arizona

brophy prep collegeWhile this architectural style dominates a large portion of New Mexico, there are striking examples of Pueblo Revival architecture in homes and buildings across Arizona. Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix is a masterful example.

Numerous buildings on the campus reflect an obvious blend of both the Puebloan and Spanish influences on architecture in Arizona. The magnificent Brophy College Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places.

There are a number of architectural styles thought historic districts in both Phoenix and Tucson. Another enjoyable option for both entertainment as an example of Pueblo Revival architecture is the Painted Desert Inn.

Originally built as part of the Civilian Conservative Corps construction projects of the Great Depression, the Inn was finished in the late 1930s. The complex is located adjacent to Petrified Forest National Park in eastern Arizona.

On the southern edge of the Grand Canyon in Arizona is the famous Hopi House. The Hopi House is one of eight architectural masterpieces designed by world-renowned architect Mary Colter.

The building’s style is a reflection of the traditional Hopi Pueblo multilevel dwellings. Hopi House was completed in 1904 and is a perfect example of the lifestyle of the native inhabitants of the US Southwest.

Still Used Today

The Pueblo Revival style of architecture is still used today. Home builders and architects appreciate the perfect blend of the ancestral Pueblo design into the adjoining Arizona landscape.

Many of the finest homes in and around Arizona’s two largest cities have large courtyards. Tucson is #2, you can guess what city is the largest.

These outdoor areas were inherent to even the oldest native homes. The weather is hot, but the ability to be outside is a welcome opportunity that is year-round in Arizona.

These are examples of the architectural style engendered to southwestern culture. If you’re looking to purchase a home in Arizona, or remodel an existing home, visit any of these marvelous examples of Pueblo Revival architecture.

Desert Colors For Your Tucson Home

Desert Colors for Your Tucson Home

Make Your Tucson Home Standout

desert colorsDesert Colors can be used to overcome space issues in your Tucson home. Every home endures some negatives. However, solutions don’t need to have high prices.

Search The Tucson MLS To Find A Tucson Home – Here!

Paint can be often-overlooked but provides the chameleon-like ability to lighten up, warm, expand, erase, or attract attention. Using desert colors can be a low-cost fix for many interior issues.

“Paint is  effective tool that will improve the architectural character and purpose of space or room,” says Minneapolis architect Petra Schwartze of TEA2 Architects. “As you choose your paint, think about what the experience in the room should be.”

Tucson is located in Southern Arizona and surrounded by the Sonoran Desert. Using desert colors in a Tucson home will enhance the indoor/outdoor lifestyles.

More advice

Always test paint colors on several walls. Don’t be bashful about painting some large swaths on walls. Try some desert color schemes in natural and artificial lighting.  Add samples to opposing sides of a room to gauge the paint color from different angles.

Check the space with the samples in place and see how the desert colors change at different times during the day.

Assess how you feel to the proposed desert color schemes. Does the space feel more cozy or open with certain desert colors? Many desert colors are warm. They will trend bring the outdoors inside. Also, using local landmark colors enhances the transition from indoors to outdoors.

Tucson weather has around 350 days of sunshine. So, the desert colors to be used on walls where the light is coming in.  Also, most homes have textured wall surfaces. Stay away from desert color schemes using high-gloss paint sheen.

How to enlarge space with color

Painting walls white, cream, pastels, or cool colors (tinged with blue or green) creates the impression of extra space by reflecting light. Paints with a desert sand color can be very good. Paint trim similar to walls (or use white on trim) to create a seamless look. It will  visually expand the space.

White or light colors lift a ceiling; darker shades will have a similar impact if you choose a high-gloss paint sheen, which reflects light and enhances space.

Use a monochromatic scheme to amplify the size of a room. Pick furnishings in one color and paint walls and trim to match. The lack of contrast will make a room seem much more spacious.

Make walls appear higher by extending wall color to on ceiling. Create a 6- to 12-inch-wide border of wall color on the entire ceiling perimeter. Do this wherever walls meet with the ceiling.

Vertical and horizontal stripes of alternate desert colors will make a room grand. Vertical stripes boost room height by drawing the eye upward.  Horizontal stripes lure ones gaze around the perimeter. This will make walls seem further away. Using similar light colors for low-contrast stripes will make a room look even bigger.

Creating intimacy

Whenever a space feels cavernous use warm colors to draw walls inward. This will make the room more comfy. Warm colors with darker hues  (red-tinged) will soak up light.

Similarly, a dark or warm color overhead (in a flat finish) can make rooms with high or vaulted ceilings less voluminous.

Creating a Peaceful Surrounding

The right desert colors paint will lend tranquility to a bathroom, master suite, or other quiet space. A painted desert color palette of soft, understated color or hushed tones enable you to instill a calming atmosphere. Some good choices include pale lavenders, lighter grays or greens, and wispy blues.

Define your assets

Call out notable features in a room with paint in contrasting desert colors. Dress crown moldings and various trims in white to help make them pop alongside walls with color. Make a fireplace or other feature a focal point by painting it a color that contrasts with walls.

“Utilizing a higher sheen of paint on woodwork, such as baseboards and door or window casings,” says Schwartze, “creates a crisp edge and clear transition from the wall to the trim.”

Hide flaws

Not everything should stand out in a space. Using a low-contrast palette of desert colors is a good way to hide unappealing elements or flaws. Conduit, radiators, and other components painted the same color as the wall will seem to disappear.

Selecting low-sheen or flat paint colors also helps hide flaws. Unless walls are smooth, avoid using high-gloss paint because it reflects light and calls attention to an uneven surface.

Hopefully, this will help Tucson home buyers see how a great deal can be a wonderful home without lots of extra costs. Are your moving to Tucson or looking for Tucson houses for sale? We can help!

Ringtail

The ringtail is a small fox-like nocturnal animal that is part of the raccoon family. When full grown, it will be about two and half feet long. This interesting member of the Tucson Arizona wildlife was once called the “miner’s cat”. It was kept as a pet by miners to get rid rodents in their cabins. The ringtail is the official state mammal,

Arizona Tree Frog

The Arizona tree frog is one of only two frog species found in Arizona. The other frog species found in Arizona is the canyon tree frog. Arizona tree frogs are only 3/4 inch to 2 inches long. The Arizona tree frog was elected as the state’s official amphibian in 1896.

Cactus Wren

Although the cactus wren is Arizona’s official State bird, it can also be found in southern California, southern Nevada, western Texas, southwest Utah, and north-central Mexico. They typically build their nest in cholla cactus. The spines of the cholla cactus provide protection. Other nesting location include palo verde trees, acacias, saguaros cactus or the hanging pot in your backyard.

Rattlesnakes

Tucson Arizona wildlife also includes thirteen species of rattlesnakes. Arizona has more species of rattlesnake than any other state. Coyotes

Coyotes are not unique to Tucson Arizona wildlife, but very prominent. They can be found from Canada to Panama and are part of the history, folklore, and present-day culture of the American West.

Javelina

Javelina evolved in South America and only recently arriving in Arizona. An adult javelina will weigh 35 to 60 lbs. Javelina eat flowers, fruits, nuts, berries, bulbs, and most succulent plants. They are not afraid to come right up to your front door and eat your fresh flowers or plants.
