City Of Tucson AZ

The City Of Tucson AZ

Modern Lifestyles In The Heart Of The Old West

The City Of Tucson AZ LightsTucson AZ is in southern Arizona about 90 miles south of Phoenix. And to the south, the Mexican border is 75 miles away.

Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona. And Tucson has the second lowest costs of living in the state. But Phoenix is more well known due to its size and as the Capital of Arizona.

For this reason, Tucson AZ has flown under the radar in many ways. It remains a hidden gem as a place to live, winter or to retire too. Tucson embraces its history and cultural heritage.

As a matter of fact, southern Arizona and the Tucson area are one of the oldest inhabited areas in North America. Long before Spanish soldiers arrived in the 1600’s, Hohokam Indians farmed the area. Yes, farmed in the Sonora Desert Valley that surrounds Tucson.

For 4,000 years the Hohokam’s built villages close to streams and the region’s rich bottom land. Furthermore, these Tuscon Basin villagers were part of the larger Hohokam world.

Jump Start Your Tucson Home Search – MLS IN TUCSON LISTINGS

Canals

Also, the Hohokam established significant trading centers throughout the southwest. And are the original builders of the canal system around the Phoenix area.

These ancient canals were rebuilt by Mormon pioneer settling in the Lehi area of Mesa, Arizona.

The name of the city “Tucson” also comes from the Pima Indians, direct descendants of the Hohokam’s.

At the foot of “A Mountain” west of the downtown Tucson AZ, is the site of Pima Indian village called “Schuk-shon”. The name means “the place at the foot of the Black Mountain”. The Spanish who inhabited the area in the early 1700’s pronounced it “Tucson”.

Spain’s Role In Tucson

Tucson AZ San Xavier MissionAs Spain expanded its position in the world, they sent soldiers and priests to Mexico. A country they owned at that time.

From there they moved north into America. Much of what is now the southwest United States was under Spanish rule.

Along with the soldiers, came Father Francisco Kino. He established the Mission San Xavier del Bac in 1699. It was a work in progress for almost 100 years. Being completed in 1797.

Another great work is the Mission San Agustin, a “visita” of San Xavier. This smaller mission sits on the west bank of the Santa Cruz River. The construction of the mission and the convento started in 1757. It took 33 years to complete construction and completed in 1790’s.

In 1775, Hugo O’Conor established the Tucson Presidio. That year marked the official birth date of the City of Tucson AZ.

Tucson was part of Mexico when it fought for independence from Spain in 1821. With the Gadsden Purchase in 1854, Tucson AZ became part of the United States.

Gadsden Purchase

The end of the Mexican-American in 1848 established the border between the countries. Under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The U.S/Mexican border ran along the Gila River.

It is important to realize that the Gila River is south of Phoenix. And for this reason, what is now southern Arizona and the City of Tucson belonged to Mexico.

In 1862, the U.S. Government’s also decided to build the transcontinental railroad. In light of that, planning for two railroad lines began.

One with a central Route through the United States. And a second Southern route through Arizona and New Mexico.

But the treaty with Mexico meant the railroad needed to run north of the Gila River. The mountains in this area make the cost of the rail line more expensive.

For this reason, the Gadsden Purchase came about. It moved the U.S border farther south. And made building the southern transcontinental railroad cheaper and faster.

To be sure, without the Gadsden Purchase in 1853, Tucson AZ might still be part of Mexico.

Railroads, Silver, And Gold

Of equal importance, the Southern Railroad route was critical to settling the southwest.

In 1877 silver was discovered in southern Arizona near the Goose Flats. It was one of the largest silver finds of the time.

In a like manner, the growth of the mining industry created a population boom. And Tucson, along with other Arizona towns, began to grow.

The Journey To Now

Arizona became an official territory in 1863. And between 1867 and 1877, Tucson AZ was the territorial capital.
In 1880, Tucson’s population reached 8,000. The driver of this growth was the Southern Pacific Railroad.

Arizona became the 48th state in 1912. The last state on the 48 states in the continental United States.

By 1950 Tucson’s population reaches 120,000. And by 1960 it doubled to 220,000. Not only was this growth driven by copper mining, but also by new technology. Air Conditioning!

By 1990, Tucson AZ is the 33rd largest U.S. city with a population over 400,000. And the 2010 census estimated the population of the City of Tucson at 526,000.

And coupled with the growth in the City Of Tucson, so did the greater metro area. The 2010 census estimated the population of the Tucson metro area to be 980,000.

And the 2017 estimated population for the Tucson metro area is over 1 million.

Tucson AZ And Southwest Home Decor

Weather

Tucson Weather is “Outstanding”. Tucson AZ boasts more than 350 days of sunshine every year. That makes it the sunniest city in the United States! OK, there may be some broken clouds.

Tucson weather has warm days and when the sun sets the evenings are cool and comfortable. Tucson weather in spring, fall & winter seasons provides mild temperatures that are legendary.

Summers can be hot. But the low humidity makes the high temperatures tolerable and the evenings pleasant.

A study by the NOAA stated Tucson AZ is one of the cooler cities in Arizona. That’s based on average summer temperatures, not being a “cool place” to live.

The Gulf Of California influences Tucson’s desert climate. The Gulf Of California is about 200 miles to the southwest. The summer moisture from the gulf creates summer monsoons.

What Is A Monsoon?

city of tucson az monsoonsOne of the frequent questions hear from our clients is “What is a monsoon?”

The word monsoon originates from the Arabic word mausim, which means season. For centuries traders sales the waters off the Arabian and Indian coasts.

They observed that dry northeast winds in the winter turned to the southwest in summer.

That change brought torrential rains to the Asian landmass.

In the Asian landmass and the Sonora Desert Valley of Tucson, these rains are beneficial. The desert wildlife and vegetation need water. Even the cacti.

These wind shifts are the mechanism for the monsoons in southern Arizona. For a most of the year, low-level winds of Tucson’s Sonora desert regions tend to blow from the land toward the sea.

In this case, the Sea is either the Gulf of California or Gulf of Mexico.

But in summer the winds shift from west to southeast. That brings moisture from the Gulf of California and Gulf of Mexico into the area.

Monsoon Season

The official period for monsoons in Tucson AZ is from June 15 to September 30. During this period prevailing winds switch from westerly to southeasterly. That wind shift brings more moisture in from the Gulf of California (mostly) and the Gulf of Mexico.

Coupled with the increased moisture is a higher dew point.

Most of Tucson’s summer days begin clear and warm. As the day progresses, giant clouds develop and tower high into the sky above the mountains. As the clouds rise, their temperatures cool.

Cooler temperatures combined with higher relative humidity creates the possibility of rain. Rain often dumping huge quantities of water in a very short time. These monsoon rains are very concentrated. One can drive from rain to no rain within a few blocks.

These “cloud bursts” will also be accompanied by strong winds, lightning and flash flooding. Flash flooding occurs as the rain comes off the mountains and collects in washes in the foothills of the mountains. As the water accumulates, it becomes deeper and moves faster. Real Fast!

Always observe the signs that says “Do Not Enter When Flooded”!

Tucson AZ Events, Attractions And Things To Do

  • Cost of living
  • Weather
  • Crime rate
  • Healthcare
  • Tax rates
  • Walkability
  • Well being ( the warm fussy feeling)

3. Tucson AZ

55+ Communities

The idea for 55+ communities started in Arizona when Del Webb developed Sun City Arizona. It was not only the first 55+ community in Arizona, it was the first in the United States. Sun City, Arizona opened on New Year’s Day 1960.

It is hard to believe, but 100,000 visitors toured the property during the first weekend. And 400 homes sold during the first month. 2,000 in the first year. Today, it is one of Arizona’s largest 55+ communities with 26,000 homes and 40,000 full and part-time residents.

Along with the homes, Sun City has 11 golf courses and countless amenities and social clubs. The demand for adult communities is as strong as it was in 1960.

Arizona and Florida have built 55+ communities for retired “boomers” and future retirees. Florida boasts over three hundred 55+ communities. Florida has more to meet the demand from the megalopolis in the Northeast.

Tucson AZ Water is a frequent topic for people thinking of moving to Tucson. Supply and quality of Tucson water are the specific questions.

The BIG question first! Tucson has enough water! Tucson’s water supply is more than adequate for today and the foreseeable future. There is no water shortage in Tucson.

Tucson Water comes from wells across the Tucson area. And Tucson sits on top of an aquifer. The size of the aquifer is gigantic.

Research suggests it will provide Tucson water for many years. Tucson water is also supplied from the Colorado River.

Water from the Colorado River to the aquifer via the Central Arizona Project (CAP). This is a canal that runs through the middle of Arizona.
Although Tucson has plenty of water, water conservation is important. At the present time, there are no water restrictions in place. As in California and a few other states.

That said, attention to water preservation practices are important.

Arizona Gardening

Arizona Gardening Has Its Challenges

Tips For Every Month

Arizona Gardening cactus FlowerArizona gardening has some challenges. Here are some tips if you are not sure of what to do once the temperature soars above 100º F. Use the following gardening calendar as your “How To Garden in the Low Desert” resource for each month of the year.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – January

January will generally be a slow month for gardening in the low desert. Take advantage of this to get ready for the forthcoming spring months. Plan your garden or landscaping projects.

January is a good time to prepare a new vegetable garden bed for spring planting. Prepare your vegetable bed using a digging fork or rototiller about 12-18 inches deep.

Do not work the soil if it is moist. It can easily damage the soil structure. Utilize several inches of compost and incorporate it into the loosened soil. For those with an established vegetable garden, this is also a good time to add more compost.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – February

In February be ready for occasional frosts. Take needed frost protection measures. Don’t allow a warm few days in February to fool you into believing spring has arrived. The low-desert can easily have evenings with freezing conditions throughout the month.

Mesquites may well seep an amber-colored resin during February. This is normal however, it could be signaling an injury to the tree. The exudates are usually sweet smelling and flavored. If the exudates are dark in color, gluey and odiferous it suggests a bacterial infection called slime flux.  You can trim affected branches, but once it has been infected the tree will remain diseased. It may take many years, but the tree will eventually die.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – March

When March arrives, spring is in the air. Or is it?  It still is possible to have freezing temperatures early in the month, so don’t store your frost protection material just yet. By the middle of March, chances of freezing temperatures are low. It is time to start your spring gardening tasks.

This is a good perfect time to divide clump-forming Agave, Aloe, Manfreda, Hesperaloe, and Candelilla in the landscape or in containers.

Many deciduous trees will begin to produce new foliage as the weather becomes much warmer. This includes Mesquites, Desert-willow, Golden Leadball Tree, Feather Tree, and Kidneywood.

Stem and flower buds are forming on many cacti at this particular time. Look for these buds on Prickly-pears, Chollas, and Hedgehogs.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – April

In April, the desert comes alive with colors, fragrances, and noises. When the fall and winter months rains are plentiful, a dazzling variety of color will cover the desert floor. Many annuals such as Mexican Gold Poppies, Owl-clover, Lupines, Yellow Evening Primrose, Bladderpod, Scorpionweeds, Chia, and Desert Pincushion.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – May

The spring blooming season is now coming to an end as the temperatures begin to increase and the impending summer is fast approaching. Numerous spring blooming annual wildflowers have gone to seed. You can gather the seed and store in paper bags until fall or let plants to reseed in the landscape. Rake up the dead annuals or cut them back. Don’t just pull them from the ground. It is better not to disturb the soil by pulling the plants out. Cutting them will allow the surviving root system to decompose naturally.

The foliagee of the Boojum Tree and Elephant Tree will continue to yellow and fall. The Boojum Tree and Elephant Tree will be summer-dormant. Periods of active growing begin from about November thru May. When the leaves of both succulents begin to fall, less water is needed.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – June

June in the low desert begins the period of higher day time temperatures. Evenings will still be cooler. Desert gardeners will begin their garden activities in the early morning or at sunset to avoid the intense sunlight. Plants must endure the rigorous heat for the duration of the day. Many native and desert plants have made countless adaptations to live successfully in the desert.

Even with these numerous adaptations, desert plants often need a little help in order to keep them healthy and flourishing in your garden. Even native and desert-adapted plants that were newly planted will need proper watering until they become established. Once established in the landscape. they will be able survive with natural rainfall. Even established plantings will require an occasional supplemental watering during lengthy periods of drought.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – July

July signals the the arrival of summer and the hoped for monsoon rains. The monsoon season provides much relief to both vegetation and animals. However, you will likely notice many of the non-native succulent plants succumbing to higher night time temperatures.

When the night time temperatures stay at 90º F or above and the humidity is high, the majority of succulent plants can not breathe. After several such nights in a row, it is highly likely many of them will rot. Other than careful watering, there is practically nothing that can be done.

Native summer annuals can be planted from seeds at this time.  These include Arizona Poppy, Chinchweed and Devil’s Claw. These annuals can be hard to germinate, but drenching the seed overnight in water will kick start the germination process.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – August

August in Arizona is the point in time when we all begin to wonder when the summer will end. Unfortunately, we have about two more months to endure. Monsoons clouds continue to build in the afternoons. The humidity is increasing and raindrops start falling during the mid afternoons.

During August you will continue to notice that your succulent plants are succumbing to higher night time temperatures. The higher night time temperatures and humidity takes it toll. Many will rot. There is nothing that can be done.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – September

September is the beginning of the end of the higher temperatures. By the end of September, daytime temperatures will lower, and evenings become cooler.  Monsoons end and humidity levels start to drop. Now is the period to begin preparing for your wildflowers, annual herbs and vegetables. Prepare your list and head to the nearest fall plant sale.

Keep watching for yellowing of cacti and succulents. The sun’s position continues lowering, however shade cloth will be needed for another month. Plants that are summer dormant will likely begin to leaf out towards the end of the month. Collect seeds from your perennials during this time period. Continue weeding or at the very least cut off the flowering heads before they go to seed.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – October

If you planned your vegetable garden last month you are ready to get started. Finding plant sales is also a great opportunity to chat with the experts on desert plants and gardening. Not to mention finding an array of desert-adapted trees, shrubs, cacti, succulents and perennials to choose from.

The monsoon moisture is gone and drier air and cooler nights are the norm. The first half of the month will probably still be warm with day time temps in the high 80’s and low 90’s. Breathe a sigh of relief along with your garden!

Start removing the shade cloth that you might have placed to protect plants from damaging rays of the intense summer sun. They can be on their own now.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – November

November is the time to begin planning for frost occurrences depending on where you are in Arizona. Historically, the very first freeze can happen as early as the November 15 in northern Arizona. Buy and/or stage your frost protection so that if and when an event occurs, you are prepared.

Use a fabric such as N-Sulate, burlap or old sheets. Do not use plastic. Plastic causes plants to burn where they come into contact with it. Frost cloth such as N-Sulate can be found at a variety of garden facilities.

Local gardening centers will most likely sell it by the yard, foot or in bulk rolls. N-Sulate is a medium-weight, permeable, UV-treated cloth that is reusable. When used correctly, it adds a number of degrees of heat underneath.

Drape material so it meets the ground around the edge of the plant in order to trap warm air and any heat radiating from the ground.  N-Sulate frost cloth does have about a 30% shade factor, so although it can be left on for several days in a row, do not leave it on the plants the entire winter or long periods of time.

Arizona Gardening Tips By Month – December

The first half of December is normally fairly mild. Colder weather is more likely during the second half of the month. Any frost sensitive plants in containers should have been brought in under cover of a patio.  Be sure to use frost protection to plants that can’t with stand colder temps. Use a material such as N-Sulate, burlap or old sheets; never use plastic as it causes plants to burn where they come into contact with it.

Arizona State Bird

A Small Bird Building Nests In Saguaro Cactus

The Cactus Wren

arizona state bird cactus wrenThe Arizona state bird is the Cactus Wren. This bird is 7 to 9 inches long, but noise. The Cactus Wren builds its nest in thorny desert plants for protection.

It will build many nests, but only live in one. The rest are just decoys.

The Arizona legislature adopted the Cactus Wren as the Arizona State Bird in 1973. Interestingly, the Cactus Wren is a bird does not know to Audubon during his lifetime. Therefore, it was not included in the 1840 edition of Birds of America.

Cactus Wrens are native to the arid southwestern United States. They also spend time in central Mexico.

Cactus Wrens primarily eat insects. Ants, beetles, grasshoppers, and wasps are favorites. They will also occasionally eat seeds and fruits.

The water they drink is almost exclusive obtained from its food. A little-known fact is that as a true bird of the desert, the cactus wren rarely drinks free standing water. Even when standing water is available.

The cactus wren is often found around yucca, mesquite or saguaro cacti. Cactus wrens’ nest in cactus plants. Using a hole in a saguaro or other spot where prickly cactus spines provide protection for the nest.

Interesting Facts

Male and female cactus wrens’ mate for life. They are very similar in appearance. They aggressively protect their established territory. This is where they live most of the year.

The Cactus Wren will aggressively defend their nests from predators. Cactus wrens also destroy the nests of other bird species, pecking at or removing their eggs.

A Cactus Wren is easily seen and is less shy than most other wrens. It has the same loud voice characteristic of other wrens, but a harsh and unmusical song. It has a slightly curved bill, brown head with a white eye stripe, barred wings and tail. The tail feathers are spotted which makes it easy to identify.

Unfortunately, the population of the Arizona State bird has declined. Large-scale development throughout the Southwest has caused declines in cactus wren populations. While they are harder to find, they are still a beautiful bird.

By the way, a great place to see the wildlife of the Sonoran Desert is at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum.
