El Tour de Tucson

El Tour de Tucson

One Of the Top Cycling Events in the United States

El Tour de TucsonEl Tour de Tucson is clearly one of the premier road bicycling happenings in the United States. El Tour de Tucson was first held in 1983.  Richard DeBernardis, an active cyclist created it. The first El Tour lured nearly 185 riders to Tucson.

Today that number has risen to over 9,000 cyclists. Folks, this is a BIG event.

As the El Tour de Tucson has grown, more and more people in the bike industry have been exposed to Tucson AZ.  Tucson has become known as a great place to ride. El Tour de Tucson has put Tucson on the cycling map.

Bicycling Magazine have three reasons for ranking Tucson as one of the top cycling destinations among cities its size. Number 1 is Sunshine. Number 2 is sunshine. And Number 3, you guested it, is sunshine.

Now for those not familiar with Tucson, that is year around sunshine. Not just summer, not just spring, not just fall, not just winter. Year around sunshine for over 350 days a year.

El Tour de Tucson routes range from 109 miles to 42 miles. There is one route at 1/4 mile for the kids. The event offers fun and cycling tests for all levels of Tucson cycling skills. The longer route travels through and around the city of Tucson and out to Oro Valley AZ.

While the valley Tucson sets in is at about 2,500 feet above sea level. Some of the peaks of the 5 mountain ranges surrounding Tucson go as high as 9,200 feet.

While not included in the Tour de Tucson, many Tucson cyclist take the trip up to Mt. Lemmon. That is an elevation change of some 7,000 feet from start to finish.

A Charity Event

El Tour de Tucson cyclists raise funds for many Tucson Charities.  Some of those Tucson charities include:

– Tu Nidito Children & Family Services
– American Parkinson Disease Association
– Water For People
– Ben’s Bells Project
– Big Brothers Big Sisters of America
– Diamond Children’s Medical Center
– other Perimeter Bicycling charities
– Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
– Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

If you’re not in training for a long road race there are many “easier” routes throughout Tucson.

There are literally hundreds of miles of bike friendly roads. One of the most popular is the 55-mile, car-free Urban Loop. And with our mild climate and sunny skies is perfect for a ride any time of year.

OK, have lots of water available in the summer.

Natural Disasters Reduce Home Values

Natural Disasters Reduce Home Values

Home Values Increase Less in Areas with Natural Disasters

natural disastersNatural disasters reduce home valuations. Homes in disaster-prone areas face decreasing values due to higher of home insurance. Not to mention flood insurance.

To make matters worse, natural disasters are becoming more common and more severe.

These risks include hurricanes, floods, wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, landslides, and tornadoes.

Predictions are the severity and frequency of such risks will increase in the future.

Homeowners affected by natural disasters are moving to new areas altogether. Realtor.com indicates 78% of homebuyers consider natural disasters when buying a home

To no one’s surprise, natural disasters effect a large portion of the United States.

natural disasters map

The risk is highest along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. In that area, more than 90% of properties in counties are at risk of a dramatic change in insurance coverage.

In California, 3 million homes are at risk.

Disaster proofing a home will reduce some of these risks. But at what cost?

And even if a home is “disaster proofed” will the cost of home insurance or flood insurance be prohibitive to home ownership?

Where Will Your Next Home Be?

Where you buy your next home needs to consider the potential for natural disasters. Whether that is your choice for retirement, seasonal or full time living.

Now where can one find a great climate, lots of outdoor activities and NO natural disasters? Consider Arizona. Better yet, make it Tucson Arizona.

Now here is some good news.

Arizona has a low risk for natural disasters. Low but not zero when it comes to wildfires.

They occur every year. But in the more remote areas of northern Arizona. Although there are other pros and cons about living in Arizna, natural disasters should not be one of them.

In April, the desert comes alive with colors, fragrances, and noises. When the fall and winter months rains are plentiful, a dazzling variety of color will cover the desert floor.

Many annuals such as Mexican Gold Poppies, Owl-clover, Lupines, Yellow Evening Primrose, Bladderpod, Scorpion weeds, Chia, and Desert Pincushion.

Commoner & Co

Commoner & Co Creates Unique American Cuisine

The Tucson Restaurant Scene Keeps Getting Better

Commoner & CoCommoner & Co restaurant opened in June 2015. After 2 years of serving up unique American food, it clearly is a winner on Tucson’s Northeast side.

Located at 6960 E. Sunrise Drive (on the southeast corner of Sunrise and Kolb) Commoner & Co is receiving very positive reviews.

The dinner food choices are varied and interesting. Oh, the happy hour is great. And on Sunday there is brunch.

The atmosphere at Commoner & Co is anything but common. But it is not the place for an intimate evening out with your spouse or significant other.

The inside space presents high ceilings, industrial duct work and large overhead doors that open to the outside patio. The outside area provides stellar views of the Catalina Mountains.

It reminds you of the service area of a large auto dealership. And if the word “noise” comes to mind, you are right. It is!

Commoner & Co – Let’s Get to The Food

The menu at Commoner & Co is small but varied. Just one page. But everything is made from scratch.

Great appetizers! A short rib empanada with apricot dipping sauce is an interesting starter. It is fabulous! Looking for something a little different? Try the brulee goat cheese tart. Great flavors that are perfect for a favorite wine or other beverage of choice.

One of the house specialties is the C&C Burger. This beauty challenges the taste buds. It’s flavored with brown sugar, pepper cured pork belly, horse radish pickles and a house dijon.

OMG! If you can finish the C&C Burger off, you must be hungry.

Other top menu picks include the braised short ribs and seared ribeye. Don’t want meat, try the crispy white chicken served with cheddary grits.

But Then

If there is a downside at Commoner & Co, it’s the service. The word spotty comes to mind. It can be good to great, but also poor. Hopefully, that will get better.

Commoner & Co strives to be a top neighborhood gathering place on the Northeast side. The food and bar are reaching the mark. With better service, this new Tucson restaurant will be at the top of the list.

Gulf Of California

Exploring the Wonders of the Gulf of California

The Gulf of California Makes the Sonoran Desert Thrive

Gulf Of CaliforniaThe Gulf of California is some 200 miles southwest of Tucson AZ, but a major influence on its climate. Tucson sits on a valley floor surrounded by mountains in the Sonoran Desert.

The Sonoran Desert is covers some 110,000 square miles that includes Arizona and Southern California, and of Northwestern Mexico.

Baja California and Baja California Sur are in this desert as well.

The Gulf of California, also referred to as the Sea Of Cortez, is located in the middle of Sonoran Desert. This expansive body of water provides moisture that brings live to most desert species.

The Gulf of California leads many ecologists to refer to the Sonoran Desert as a maritime desert.

Created 6 million Years Ago

The Gulf of California divides the Sonoran Desert into two bodies of land. The Baja California peninsula to the west, and the Mexican state of Sonora to the east. The Gulf of California was created some 6 million years ago when the Baja California Peninsula was pulled from North America.

This event allowed ocean water to flow into the heart of the Sonoran Desert and bring life creating moisture to the desert lands.

The Gulf of California is 700 miles long and varies from 30 to 150 miles wide. It has an average depth of around 2700 feet deep. Interestingly, the surface area of the Sea Of Cortez is almost the same as the Sonoran Desert itself – 100,000 square miles.

The Gulf of California is considered to be one of the most diverse seas on the planet. It is home to more than 5,000 species of macro-invertebrates. The Gulf of California is the eastern shore of Baja California.

Baja California is second longest peninsulas in the world.

The Gulf of California Creates Monsoons in Tucson AZ

The Gulf of California is the significant contributor to the summer monsoon rains in Tucson and Southern Arizona. As gulf water evaporates, it rises into the northward flowing air currents. The higher summer moisture hitting the mountains around Tucson accounts for about half of areas annual rainfall.

These annual monsoon rains are essential in maintaining the diversity of the Sonoran Desert. Without the monsoons, much of the plant life and desert amphibians would not survive.

Only a few species anywhere that owe their existence to a single body of water in the middle of the desert in which they live.

The Sonoran Desert is the only place in the world where the famous saguaro cactus can be found. Other cacti found in the desert landscape include the cholla, fishhook, prickly pear and organ pipe as well as others. These cactus varieties provide food and homes to many desert mammals and birds.

The winter rains from the northwest make the Sonoran Desert bloom from late March through June. Desert flowers explode with brilliant reds, pinks, yellows, and whites pedals. The summer monsoons bring a second season to the desert floral landscape.

Tucson Lifestyles

The magic of the Sonoran Desert is offers Tucsonans an endless list of things to do and see. The beauty of the mountains surrounding Tucson provide home sites with desert vistas and a backdrop for most Tucson homes.

Spectacular desert sunsets that create back lighting for Saguaro cactus and trees that make the end of every day something to look forward too.

In 2000, following a decision to abandon the sand and gravel quarry adjacent to the original golf course, the Town of Marana and the quarry/golf course owner agreed on a plan that would reclaim the quarry.  After a significant reconstruction of the site a unique desert golf course was created.

Named Quarry Pines Golf Club, the front nine play along the rim of the old quarry and the back nine moves up and down the quarry walls.  Firm sloping fairways and usually fast greens require accurate shots placed in the correct spot on the green.

The course provides an experience you won’t forget. Bring an extra sleeve ( or 2 ) of golf balls. The Pines Golf Club has recently been renamed the Quarry Pines Golf Club.

Tips to Make Tucson Feel Like Home

Insider Tips for Making Tucson Feel Like Home

Tucson city lightsIf you’re from Tucson, then you already know what it is like living there and making Tucson home.

But if you’re moving to Tucson from out of state, you’re going to have to adjust.

In this article, we’ll go over a few insider tips to help make Tucson feel like your new home, without having to wait years to gain all the inside info.

If you’re ready to learn more about how to make Tucson just like home, let’s get started.

1. Be aware of wildlife

If you’re from a big city, you’re likely not used to seeing deer, rabbits, coyotes, bobcats, and rabbits on your drive to work every day, let alone in your backyard.

Tucson wildlife bobcatIf you have pets, then you need to be extra careful, as these animals are wild and can attack you or your beloved pet. Always take out your dog on a leash and you may want to reconsider letting your cat outside as they can be prone to being attacked by larger animals.

Not only are animals something to worry about, but rattlesnakes, scorpions, and even termites can cause havoc in your daily life. Lizards, packrats, and other small critters can (and will) make it into your home. Cockroaches are another pest that is often making their way into homes in Tucson.

Anyone with a fear of wild animals or critters may want to check out Tuscon before moving there, to see if you can handle seeing a critter here and there. A quick tip is to plug your drains at night, as they can make their way into your home.

Make sure that you have the home you’re looking at purchasing inspected for termites. If you make the mistake of buying a termite-infested home, you’re going to have a large problem on your hands.

2. You’ll need to get some sunscreen

If you’re going to be outside a lot or your skin is on the pale side, you’re going to need sunscreen. The higher the SPF, the better. Even if you don’t have pale skin, protecting your skin’s still a good idea.

Tucson is close to the equator, which means that the sun’s rays are much stronger. It’s common for people to even swim in swimsuits, as the sun can be brutal during the summer.

Water is also your best friend. In the dry weather climate, you can get dehydrated rapidly, and it’s always best to be prepared with a water bottle on hand.

3. Tucson is slower paced than what you may be used to

Anyone who’s lived in New York or Los Angeles knows that if you’re moving slowly, you’re going to get left behind. But that’s not the case in Tuscon, as the pace is much slower than that of a larger city.

People even drive a bit slower than you may be used to. It’s a big city with a small-town feel, and with 300 days of sunshine, there are plenty of people taking it easy with the great weather.

If you’re more of a hustle-and-bustle type, then Tuscon may not be the vibe you’re looking for. However, once you get used to the laid-back lifestyle, it’s hard to go back any other way.

4. Tucson has a young crowd

Are you on the younger side and worried about finding a crowd to mix in with? Don’t worry, the average age in Tuscon is 33, comparatively to the national average of 38. There are plenty of young people who go to the University of Arizona and decide to stay, or even stay after their time at the Air Force Base.

There’s a lot of nightlife, art museums, a cool downtown environment, and a hip crowd to go with it. If you’re down with staying active, enjoying great art and the outdoors, and a down-to-earth environment, Tucson can be a great choice if you’re a young adult looking for a permanent residence.

5. Consider a moving service when moving to Tucson

Premier Tucson Homes blog postWhen moving to Tuscon, the last thing you want to do is be in the heat while unloading all of your furniture. If you have the extra funds for it, low-cost movers in Tuscon can help relieve the burden of packing and unpacking all your belongings.

With how hot it can get during the summer months, if you’re not prepared for it, you may not even be able to finish the job in a single day.

Experts, however, understand the weather and just how to help you get situated in your new environment.

Conclusion

Tuscon is an up-and-coming, vibrant city that is meant for not only retirees but also the younger crowd that will find plenty to do in Tuscon and the surrounding areas. If you’re new to Tuscon, then be aware of the wildlife, and bring some sunscreen alongside your travels.

It’s always best to check out Tuscon before moving there, as it’s not for everyone. However, the ones that love it, never leave!
